I bought some ground beef last week on clearance. I thought DH used it for tacos, but found it in a bag in the fridge today. Sell by/use by date was 11/29. One package is looking fairly brown but the other looks ok. Eat or toss?

If the packet that looks okay smells okay when you open it, I would start to cook it and see if it still smelled okay as it was cooking. If there was the slightest whiff from it, I would throw it out pronto!

I'm usually pretty generous with what I will eat past a certain date, ground beef is an exception. Toss it.

Toss.
Ground beef should be used within 1-2 days.

The fact that it was on clearance gives me pause. I might be tempted to give it the sniff test and/or break it up and see if it is still pink on the inside.

Ground beef not in a chub dated basically two weeks ago? Tie up that bag and TOSS! 11/29 was exactly one week ago. But yes, TOSS! *ETA* What's a chub? *ETA2* I know what that kind of chub is, but I don't think that's what you were referring to.

Well, you could wait till it starts to cook and the rotten smell permeates your entire house... yuck. What can I say, DH was trying to be nice but had a pretty nasty head cold. Toss it.

Definitely toss ... Ground beef is a breeding ground for bacteria after it's best before date because of all of the surface area ... don't risk it

I'm a lot more liberal with what I'll eat than a lot of peas. But ground beef on clearance that's been in the fridge for a week? No way.

I will play loose with dates on some items, but never ground beef. Why risk it? Throw it out.

A chub is the ground beef (or sausage) that comes in a casing. There is no air in the packaging so it lasts longer. I don't know what that kind of chub is. {shrug}

If it smells ok I sure would. My answer to these things is rarely No, unless it smells bad.

I would eat many things that other peas won't eat, but ground meat a week past the expiration is a big no-no. Just throw it out.

No way! Saving a $5 package of ground beef is certainly not worth my family & me heaving for days from food poisoning.

I eat 99% of the crap most peas say no to, but this is one I couldn't eat.
That kind of chub is "wood."

I guess I will toss it. I hate when I do that. I should have just put it in the freezer right away, knowing it was close to the date when I bought it (which is why it was on sale).

Most of the time, on these kind of threads, I say yes I would eat that, but not this time. It's more than a week past the use by date. Definitely not.

I'm pretty lenient about dates and have never had food poisoning from anything I've cooked.
After all of these threads, I am curious to know if anyone has ever eaten food they thought questionable and got food poisoning.
