So we've got some stuff going on around us and I figure it's only a matter of time before the kids come down with it. I know *after* the puking has subsided, that you need to give them stuff that's easy on their guts...saltines, toasts, popsicles, etc. My mom would always give us crackers and lemon/lime soda. So my question is...what was it about the soda? Was it the acid or the bubbles that were supposed to make us feel better? And is that still a thing? My kids don't like soda, so what should I give them? Today is my weekly shopping trip, so I figure I may as well preemptively stock up on chicken noodle soup, crackers and the like. It's easier to get to the store when no one is yet vomiting!

It is the syrup that is supposed to help calm down the tummy, but it never did that for me.
I always gave my girls white grape juice, water and as many popsicles as they wanted.

My Mom gave us warm jello before it set up. We called it jello juice and only got it when we were sick.
I usually stock up on lemon-lime Gatorade (or another light color that won't stain if it comes back up.)

My mom used to give us Canada Dry ginger ale and I give it to my kids. If the carbonation bothers your kids just let the drink sit for a while and go flat. It has to have real ginger, not just ginger flavor to get the benefit. Ginger Ale for upset stomach

I was going to suggest flat ginger ale also. Ginger helps soothe stomach issues. Maybe try ginger tea.

I don't know the answer to your question re: is it carbonation, or is it the acid... but I remember my mom letting the soda go somewhat flat before giving it to me. Nowadays when I feel sick, I have apple juice- I will always associate the taste of 7-Up with being sick, and I no longer like it because of that.

I find the carbonation helps me. I can't EVER drink any 7-up type soda for the same reason crimsoncat05 stated. I have been dealing with a bug this weekend and the flavored carbonated water like Polar really help settle a cranky stomach for me.

Mom would stir the bubbles out so you didn't have a big burp building up.

I have always given lemonade flat (as my Mum did), I think the combination of water and sugar replace water loss from puking and sugar gives an energy boost, helping the patient feel a bit better.

If you stir the soda you can get the carbonation out.

We always have mint tea. Mint helps soothe the tummy & the warmth feels good.

Another vote for ginger ale, specifically Canada Dry. I find the carbonation helpful, but flat is fine too. I doubt kids would be able to eat candied ginger/ginger candy; I know I can't.
Coca cola is also really good. Only the real thing, brand name, the original. Don't know why. You can buy something called Emetrol syrup, but in my opinion it's disgusting.
Popsicles would be another option, but a kiddo might want to eat a whole one, and they should only have a tiny nibble.
Plain water is bad until the ucky stuff is over not sure why, but it is.
No need for chicken noodle soup; I see that as more for the flu or a bad cold. It's fine to progress the diet as tolerated. Bland carbs are usually best.

Neither me nor my dd like carbonation so we just never drink it when we are sick. That is us too. None of us drink carbonated drinks. We just have saltines and water, and then we follow the BRAT diet as we start to feel better.
