We lived there for 4 years while my husband attended medical school in the 1980s. We visited there 3 years ago, and although there is better shopping, little else has changed.

I live in North Augusta, SC, right across the river from Augusta. In fact, I work in Augusta. Let me know if I can help.

I lived near Augusta from 2003-2008. I lived in Evans, which is in Columbia Co. I would highly suggest looking there instead of Augusta/Richmond Co. They are very close but the schools are better, taxes are lower, there is better housing, etc. in Columbia Co (Evans and Martinez).

Traffic is horrendous in and around the Atlanta suburbs. So I can't answer without knowing what your work situation is and whether you would need the airport. I took my DD to the Atlanta airport. I left an area north of Atlanta at 6:00 and it took me an hr and a half to get there. Normal travel time to the airport is 45 mins.

I lived in Hephzibah Ga just outside of Augusta in 1995-2001. It's in Richmond Co near Ft Gordon. If you move to the area I suggest you live in Columbia Co in Martinez or Evans.
ETA: Get hash and BBQ at Sconyers! and accurate dates are important.

61redhead Ft Gordon was my husband's last assignment before he retired. Being at an Army post sucked! We are spoiled Air Force people. I worked downtown at Walton Rehab.

It has a regional airport that I flew in and out of quite a bit. The only time I flew out of Atlanta was when I went overseas. But, you are right-Atlanta traffic is horrendous!

Gordon was my husbands last duty station, too! I didn't think it was that bad, but we were an Army family It looks like we were there at the same time for a couple of years.

So I am just thinking at this point.
I work from home and we can live anywhere.
I'm not thrilled about my daughters prospects for High School and so I went looking on the internet..
She is a fabulous singer and wants to pursue Musical Theatre in college... which is highly competitive. I figure she is better going to school in a bigger place ... more competition and more opportunities.
So the two schools that caught my eye are Davidson Fine Arts in Augusta, which is named as one of the top 50 high schools in the US... not specifically performing arts schools. And Pebblebrook High School in Cobb Co.
Both appear to be magnets schools that you have to audition to get into. I don't think she would have an issue getting in.If I read Davidson's website correctly we can actually apply before we live in Augusta but we would have to be prepared to move there in March in order to accept a spot.
So I am not worried about commuting. I am concerned about good schools. I want her to get a great education so if she changes her mind between now and graduating she will still have options.
So any experience with those schools?
We would rent to start with and both seem to be in line with what we pay here.

A couple of times we have flown out of Atlanta from Asheville... we have to give ourselves 6 hours to make sure we don't get stuck in traffic. Now we generally drive an hour to two hours to get to Greenville, SC or Charlotte to fly out of...so I'm not worried about traffic to the airport.

I can't answer your question specifically about Pebblebrook, but I can about magnets. Cobb county is lucky in that we have several magnets that cover different areas. My children have all attended/are attending magnets and I have been thrilled with the education received at each one, my daughter has a friend that attended the Davidson magnet and she too, seems to have had a fabulous high school education.
I guess it comes down to whether you want to live in metro Atlanta or 2 hours (and a very boring 2 hour drive!) away. Cobb has lots of things going for it, but we also just got the Braves stadium which should royally mess up traffic over the next few years. Our magnet applications for next year just closed, as far as I know. Is she in 8th grade?
Hope that helps!

Thanks @agnesdeux she is in 7th... so we have some time. Davidson she could go to at 8th grade...
So is Cobb a suburb or more urban/suburban. Does it have good public transport?

Sorry I've never heard of that school even though I lived there for 9 years. I can tell you that east Cobb is a wonderful, beautiful place to live. The distance to the airport and the city traffic was bad but if you don't have to go there often you'd be just fine. Good luck with your decision!

Public transport is iffy, at best. We have some, but it doesn't meet up with MARTA (metro atlanta rapid transit) in many places. Cobb decided to do their own, which is silly, so we all drive. Everywhere. All the time. Cobb is a suburb, but it is a busy one, it takes us 20-30 minutes to get to midtown. There are still portions that are slightly more rural, but they are few and far between. It's a great place to live and raise kids. The education system is terrific and there is always something to do-library, shopping, skate oarks, hiking, you name it.
