17 yo DD has had a sore throat for over a week with little postules of yellow/white on her tonsils. She's been tested for strep twice and it's been negative. I took her back to the doctor yesterday and they tested for mono but we don't know the results yet. She is tired but she's keeping a pretty busy schedule with family in town, etc.
She doesn't seem to have a fever or swollen lymph nodes, etc. Just the sore throat and tired.
We leave for vacation Saturday and I really want to help her feel better but don't know what else to do. She's taking Motrin but it doesn't seem to help the pain.
Any ideas? If you had mono, is this similar to how it felt for you?

The main thing I remember from when I had it a million years ago was just being soooooo tired. I would sleep for hours, be up for maybe an hour (and by up, I mean sitting in bed), and then nap again. I know I had swollen lymph nodes, and I was also pretty jaundiced.

I had it a hundred years ago. I started out with the typical strep symptoms that never got better. On the 2nd trip to the doctor, I tested positive for mono. I spent my whole summer in bed just tired and unable to stay awake.

My eyelids swelled, I was extremely tired, and sore. I had to really take it easy for a few weeks until I finally got better.

I had it in college. The thing I remember is the crushing exhaustion. All I wanted to do was sleep. And I did for 2 weeks straight. I had a relatively mild case. But I didn't get out of bed for 2 weeks.

Yup, the crushing exhaustion. Sheesh.
I thought it was because I had a baby. Then my neck lymph nodes swelled up like mad and I went to the doctor afraid of cancer and found out it was mono. Awful.
Never had a minute of sore throat or fever.

DD had when she was in 2nd grade and was only tired. Went to school, came home, napped, ate dinner and was in bed for the night. She did that for about 4 weeks. However, mono reoccurred at 20 and boy she had full blown symptoms. Sore throat, aches & pains, headache, very very tired, puss pockets down her throat. Couldn't eat or drink. She was diagnosed with strep too on top of mono. Absolutely miserable!! That is when I found out that mono is not a 'one' time thing. It sits dormant in your system until…. .

Exhaustion. DD had it last fall. It started with a couple of back to back strep like l throats that seemed to go away. It came and went, she'd be ok for a few days then exhausted. She would come home from school snd marching band practice at 5:30 and be in bed asleep by 6:00.
We finally took her back to the dr thinking she was anemic or depressed and they ran the mono test at the same time as the anemia. It only took a few minutes to get the results.
It probably took two months or more for her to be 100% again.

We went through this in April. My son complained of a sore throat. After about 5 days he was ready to go to the doctor. The urgent care doctor did not test for strep but we all thought that is what he had and so she perscribed antibiotics. After 3 days his throat was still bothering him and he went back. They changed antibiotics and got some preliminary lab work. Apparently it takes at least 10 days for the mono virus to show in a blood test so we had to go back for more when his CBC came back abnormal. He never had any other symptoms. It took him about 3 weeks for his throat to feel fine. We also had to have an abdominal ultrasound to make sure that his spleen was not enlarged. It is at risk for being enlarged due to the mono and it could easily rupture.
He was on complete bed rest for a while and it about killed all of us because he was bored and full of energy. He ended up missing 2 weeks worth of school and I think a month of work. He was not allowed to do any strenuous activity for 30 days from onset of symptoms. No work, reserves duty, mowing the yard etc. He was allowed to sit quietly and watch movies or visit with friends.
For pain control we did tylenol/motrin and lots of cold/frozen food. Lots of soft foods too.
I hope your daughter feels better soon and is back to normal quickly.

But I didn't get out of bed for 2 weeks. I had it my senior year of high school. I remember the exhaustion. It was also. I had a pretty severe case though because I was out of school for 3 weeks. I even had a non itchy rash rash type thing...it wasn't even raised, just my skin was all pink Apparently it's rare (at least at the time) because the doctor was so amazed because they had only seen it in text books. She even had an intern come in and exam me. They were all fascinated....I just wanted to go home and go to bed.

My daughter had it last fall. She just started her Freshman yr of college. She had a really bad sore throat and was very tired. She had to eventually go on prednisone to help relieve her sore throat. She would call home crying. I kept telling her to go to another doctor. They wanted her to wait a week for the mono test.

My son was presenting with some symptoms - and I didn't realize that a sore throat was one - and was tested but it came back negative. I've never had it, but my mom did when she was a teenager. That's all I've got, sorry.

I remember my 11 year old son having a sore throat, of course. But the unusual thing was fatigue, like others have mentioned. At a Father's Day dinner out, he laid down in the booth at the restaurant while we were eating.

I had it when I was about 20 (many years ago). I have never experienced a sore throat like that before or since. I remember it hurting so bad I just cried. My mom would hold me and comfort me trying to get through the night until we could go to the doctor the next day. For a couple of months I stayed in bed except for doctor visits. It took at least a year to get all my energy back.

A tiredness more tired than being pregnant. I thought I would die as I was so tired.

Evidently, I've had it in the past and didn't know it. I had typical mono symptoms recently, but it turned out to be something else. However my blood work showed that I had mono in the past, but didn't have a current infection. I was sick with pneumonia, asthma, and bronchitis so often as a teenager that it may just have blended into the "regular" illnesses. So strange.

I had it seven weeks after giving birth to my second child. It started with a high fever that lasted for at least five days. When the fever broke that sore throat was out of control...worst I have ever had. This lasted for another week or so. My pediatrician was very concerned for my baby, who had not yet formed a blood brain barrier. I had to use disposable dishes, etc and wear a mask. After the sore throat cleared, I broke out in a mouth of cold sores. They were everywhere...even in my throat! I had never had a cold sore prior to mono. My dr said they are a symptom of the virus. I was a mess. I didn't/couldn't eat. On the bright side, I lost all my baby weight, and then some, in a relatively short period of time. I don't recall being particularly tired. Then again, a mom with a new born and a toddler is always tired, so maybe I just couldn't tell how tired I was. lol

This exactly. I was 17. I slept about 20 hours a day. Missed 2 months of school. Yuck. I hope it's not mono.

I was in my mid-twenties and I remember my glands were so swollen I didn't have to feel for them - they stuck out of my neck like the bolts on Herman Munster. The exhaustion was such that I could not lift my head off of my pillow.

I only read the OP but those were my DD symptoms. She thought she had strep but tested negative. She was diagnosed with mono but I don't remember how long it took; this was 3 years ago. I think she had a mild case if that is possible because I don't remember her being very sick.
