I don't know her well enough to know what she likes. I've got those small butter cookies, a jar of preserves, and some candy. What else? Maybe that's not food-related? She's probably got enough lotion to last a lifetime...

Cheese and crackers? Wine (don't laugh, my mom and stepdad are 86 and 88 and they love good wine)? Coffee, tea, or maybe instant flavored versions? A book or magazine? A set of notecards and some stamps? Could you add a few gorgeous, perfect apples and pears to the basket?
Probably not much help. So much depends on the health, tastes, and interests of the person.

Like Lucy suggested, I would buy blank notecards, a boxed set of miscellaneous cards (birthday, sympathy, etc.), a nice pen, stamps, and maybe a stamp with her return address. I used to do that for my grandmas and they loved it.

A new calendar?
A small flashlight with batteries (it could be a pretty color).
A little vase of artificial flowers
Is she has her own home, a pretty dish towel or dishcloths
A package of decorative paper napkins

Thought of another thing my grandmas loved -- microfiber cloth to clean eyeglasses. I found them with really pretty printed on designs, and they both just loved those things.

A nice bottle of hand soap? That's something consumable that everyone uses. TJMaxx carries some fun ones or there's always Bath & Body Works.

Postage stamps, search word or crossword puzzle books and pencils, grocery store gift cards in small amounts so she can splurge on a treat for herself, instant lottery tickets, heating pad/ice pack, a roll of quarters (if she doesn't have her own washer and dryer)
ETA: large button remote, senior-friendly kitchen gadgets, large readout clock, nightlights, small pillow/cushion

Only give gift cards that have no expiration date.
A nice nice pair of fancy pajamas with a matching robe and slippers

I'm trying to not repeat anything that's been mentioned already. I'll add: - those little kleenex packets designed for your handbag - "russian tea" mix or something similar - chapstick or lip balm - a rice bag to heat in the microwave and put around your neck

A nice puzzle if there's someplace where she has space to work it.

I'm thinking back to the items I read on the wish lists of an angel tree for senior citizens - and many asked for a soft/fluffy throw or blanket. Or you could do something warm and cozy that could be worn around the shoulders when sitting. When my mother-in-law was in physical rehab I got her a light fleece jacket and she loved to have it draped around her or even over one shoulder; she could pull it up around her neck too if she wanted.

How about a pretty mug and some fancy tea. Or a tea infuser.

I wouldn't give food because so many elderly have dietary restrictions. My granny loves to wear non-skid socks. Shawls, blankets, a neck pillow, a magnifying glass or magnifying sheet, Individual packets of Kleenex, lap throw, body cream (I would get something moisturizing but unscented), gift cards to the grocery store.

My mother is 86 and she would laugh her ass off if someone gave her a gift basket full of old-lady stuff like that. She travels, she entertains, she does volunteer work, she goes to book group, she drives or takes public transit into the big city on a regular basis. Her vision is better than mine and she eats/drinks everything. It really depends on the individual.

I have aunts that age and they enjoy both traditional puzzles and word puzzles. I definitely like the idea of the cards/note cards & stamps.
They enjoy a fruit basket, but not grapefruit because it isn't allowed with some of their medications.

Is this a neighbor or someone like that? I'd make up mini meals--a mason jar of soup (or Ziplock makes some great little containers with screw on lids), a serving of meatloaf and mashed potatoes, a stew... Something that is a pain to make for one or two people.

I adore Nordstrom's "butter socks." Link below. So does everyone I give them to! The quality is so much better than those you can get at Target, etc and are only a couple $$$ more. I think they'd be a lovely addition to your gift. NORDSTROM BUTTER SOCKS

Do you know if she uses an iPad or tablet? My mother really likes using a stylus and lap pillow/stand. With arthritis in her hands, it is hard to hold the tablet sometimes, so she uses the lap pillow instead.
