This is the first that I've ever considered a planner for myself. But when I think of the birthdays that I generally miss throughout the year, the crafts that I end up doing at the last minute before a craft show or as gifts, and other things that I'd like to accomplish yet can't seem to get organized enough to do so - I thought, maybe a planner would help; something I could carry with me and refer to on a daily basis.
OK....I'm game to give it a try.
But where do I start? Should I make one? Should I purchase one? If I make one, are there templates that I can print or do I need to start from scratch? If I buy one, where on earth would I look for one? I see calendar books everywhere but I don't really want a calendar book - I need something for notes, planning, etc.
Please help me, Peas!
Thanks!

I am a first time planner user too (for 2016), and until I see how successful I am at using one I did not want to shell out the $$ for one, So I am making mine. I have found all sorts of printable pages, and I am using a regular 3-ring binder. I am printing my own stickers using web clip art, and I like the fact that I can really customize it for everything that I really need to plan or track. Plus you can customize even further by making your own planner pages if you have something special or a specific way you like to plan and track.
Hope this helps.

I love planners. I am one of those crazy planner people that have several. This years planner I am making my own. I am also using a three ring binder this year. Planners that I have purchased in the past, of course, have all the variety of calender's. I don't need those because luckily right now I have a quiet life. The way bought planners are set up a lot of the pre-made pages have no use for. I rather make my own pages to fit my needs.I also want this years planner to be part art journal, Project Life, SMASH book & written journal. All my planners turn out to be diaries. I do have nice planners I bought. My favorite is my MetroPol Filofax. I wouldn't turn down a KikkiK if I found one in my price range. You can find lots of beautiful templates on Pinterest for planner pages if you want to make your own. There are tutorials teaching you how to make them too. If that is any help. I saw a really pretty Heidi Swapp planners at Michael's on Thanksgiving weekend. They looked customizable but easy enough for a somebody who was just getting into the new planner craze. Her planners also reminded me a lot of Project Life too. Here's a pic of her kits- picbi.com/photo/1072103197704537398_4653920Sorry it's a random pic from the Internet. Her site was down for maintenance when I was posting. I post late at night. Here's a good YouTube video showing you how to make your own planner- www.youtube.com/watch?v=0tyYsVa7kQ4 She is one of my favorite planner people. My Pinterest board- I have a lot of ideas on how to make things for your planners. Not trying to promote my Pinterest. I didn't want to start adding a lot of links for ideas. Hope that helps.

Thanks so much, Ladies! I have a 5 x 8-1/2 3-ring binder and I'm thinking that it would make a perfect planner. Off to check out the Pinterest board and other links provided.
Thanks again!

katieanna i have always used a paper planner (right from the time i was in elementary school) and honestly i don't think it is so much about the planner as it is about you using it. if you have never used one before i would be tempted to pick up an inexpensive planner at an office supply or stationary store and that way, you will not have the guilt of having spent a good chunk of cash to just have the book take up space on your desk! there are so many options for planner lovers…spiral bound, binder systems (filofax or franklin or kikki-k, etc. oh, and paper trey ink just introduced a binder option that looks lovely), midori (or midori-esque) traveler's notebooks, hobonichi techo (has anyone seen the plaid options for the cousin…i die!), moleskine, just a simple bullet journal notebook. it can all become complicated very quickly (it is very fun but also very expensive!) but it doesn't have to. anyway, good luck.

I suggest giving some of the free printables on Pinterest a try for a month or so. I tried a couple of different planners last year and failed at both because they just didn't work for me. Back in early November started making my own traveler's journal notebooks and now I'm hooked. I had to try a few things before I got it right but I eventually found something that fit my life.
1) think about what you want it for 2) think about how YOU will use it 3) try it on for a few weeks or months

kellyv I am a big Hobonichi fan! Love their stuff. 2016 will be my second year using their planner. Before that I used Midori Traveler and Moleskeins.

Last year I spent $50 on a really fancy nice planner. This year I paid 99cents for one at the 99 cent store. The expensive one came with a lot of bells and whistles that I just didn't need or use. I got a monthly one with plenty of room to write everything I need. I have enough washi tape and fun pens and other stuff to spice it up all I need. Plus this way I can spend the other $49 on crafty stuff!!!

I prefer a paper planner and the fanciest I get is colored pens to keep family and individual family member events, homeschool, and business stuff separate. I used the Franklin Covey 5.5x8.5 knock off size before kids, just used a wall calendar for years after, then used a normal 8.5x11 notebook that I customized for a few years. Last year I went back to the 5.5x8.5" size and it worked ok, but this year I'm trying to keep what I carry to a minimum. So I'm making my own knock off of the midori.

I guess my MYO Planner idea I posted above won't happen this year. I went to Michael's tonight and the Heidi Swapp planners were 40% off. The one I was admiring was the last one left. I snagged it up. Then I noticed it was missing some of the things like the paper clips. I told the cashier that it was missing items. He noticed it too. He called the manager and she took $5 off. I got a $40 planner for $15. I am still going to do the 3 ring binder idea but it's going to be more of a SMASH book this year.

Saw Heidi Swapp on HSN, introducing her planner set. Was interested in one but didn't want to spend a lot, a while back for work I had used Franklin Covey. We have a Pat Catan's in our area here and they got in a few Heidi Swapp planners, the gold dots with everything ready to go and got it (Michael's had one left after I bought this one, more accessories but also more expensive). Totally love it and I'm hoping it will keep me focused on finding a new job (husband his recovering from knee surgery, plus I have a 3 & 5 yr old here, and just no time anymore). Loved seeing posts of other brands, but I really like to see what I'm buying up front. Will also use it for birthday reminders as well.

I use a disc bound planner. I love being able to change my mind and move everything around whenever I want without dealing with binder rings. I use an ARC planner from Staples, but there are other disc bound planner options out there as well. I have found there are oodles of freebies on Pinterest and people selling inserts on Etsy as well. So I am always buying or trying new ideas to see if I'll love them.

Webster's will have a new line of planners out this spring (which seems kinda stupid. I mean, isn't more logical to start planning in January? Or when the new school year starts?)

I am using a Midori Travelers Notebook with the monthly insert from Midori and a Daisy Dori booklet from Cocoa Daisy. I just subscribed for six months after trying it out in December.
