Butter has jumped another 50 cents in the last couple of weeks. It's now selling for $4/lb at Walmart for the very cheapest store brand. It's $4.50 for Darigold or Tillamook. Is it just me or is it insane that such a basic ingredient can go up $1.50 in cost in less than six months like this?
It's not a traditional baking season. Milk and cheese haven't changed in price, what the heck is going on with butter??

Butter for Walmart brand is $3.97/lb. here in Canada. Fraser Valley Butter is $5.50, if not more.
It's been that price at Walmart forever, I'll have to check and see what it is next week.

More price raises are on the way as the drought continues in Ca.

But why butter and not milk and cheese? That's what's weird to me. There hasn't been a price raise across the board in dairy. Just butter.

Yes, and unsalted butter is now more than salted here.

Haven't noticed an increase, but I typically try to buy butter and other staples at Aldis.

It does seem that the prices of everything has increased in general at the store.. can't seem to get out of the store for less than $125 (even at Aldis) anymore!

I hadn't noticed, but I tend to buy it when it is on sale or when it is buy one/get one free and then stick the extra in the freezer. This means that I don't buy every time I go. But I do a lot of baking, and I am almost out, so I will have to buy the next grocery run...hopefully it won't be too bad.

Just consulted the google...nothing recent except a NYT finance article about the price of futures contracts for buying/selling butter as a commodity. Did turn up some articles from 2012 and 2013 about the severe drought and that leading to higher prices because the feed used for dairy cattle had gone up so much farmers were culling their herds.

Butter and cheese and milk are going up because ranchers had to sell a lot of their cows last year due to drought and shortage of food and water

It did seem a little high when I bought some last week that was at my local grocery store not Walmart.

Haven't noticed an increase, but I typically try to buy butter and other staples at Aldis. I do the same thing at Aldis. Since I have to go every other week for milk, I stock up on the butter. Just put the extra's in the freezer until I need them.

I tend to stock up too and I think that's why it was such a shock to me. I haven't bought butter in over a month and it was on sale or from Costco. It totally sucks. We love baking and I go through butter quickly.

Everything is increasing in price. Seems every time I go into BJs Warehouse the prices on a lot of items are up 50 cents to $1. I rarely buy butter, but when I do, it's from a local dairy. I haven't noticed a change in price. It was still $2.80/pound last week.

It's been almost $5 a pound here in California for months now. Many dairies are in central California and that part of the state has been the hardest hit by the drought so expect the prices to keep going up.

Yep!
Some weeks I go through 20 pounds of butter for cakes - and the new prices are nuts. I pay $3.89/lb for the no name Walmart stuff.
I LOVE when the big name butters go on sale for $2.99! Last week I bought 40 pounds while it was on sale. That should last me another two weeks I think. Then I'll pray for another sale.
I'd hate to have to raise my cake prices, but it is looking like I may have to soon!

That's around the same as UK prices. We pay anything from around $4 to $6.40 a pound for supermarket own brand butter. Of course the fancy fancy one with salt crystals that I like is at the top of that range. A half pound of butter will last DH and I at least 6 weeks though, so I don't mind it too much. Take a look at my blog to find out what I've been up to

Yes, 4 sticks is $5 here. (only purchase Land o' Lakes) I think that is outrageous so I only buy during holiday season. They tend to lower the price on baking goods during holidays where folks bake a lot. I buy 7 or 8 boxes and throw them in the freezer.

I noticed the price jump, too. I figured it might have something to do with the drought we're in, but cheese prices haven't risen. Weird.

I buy it in bulk at Costco and haven't really noticed a price change there...yet. BTW, I freeze mine.
