The nightly dinner thread always makes my mouth water. I am home alone many nights. I know I should whip up a gourmet meal but I am much more likely to skip a meal or eat cereal, popcorn or something equally unhealthy. Food just doesn't rate high on my give a hoot scale. Do you enjoy cooking enough to spend time in the kitchen just for you?

No way! ugh... If it's just me I'll eat cereal, or a melted cheese sandwich (open-faced in the toaster oven, not like a grilled cheese), or eggs, or soup, or salad. No cooking. Heck, I might just eat cheese and crackers, and a beer.

Ummm, no. I'm not home alone often, but if I was, I'd get takeout or just make a sandwich or something. If I lived alone, I guess I'd end up freezing a lot of leftovers or just having people over for dinner if I wanted to cook.

If I am home alone I usually make an omelet.

A quesadilla is my go-to solo meal.

I love to cook but not when it is just me. If I am home by myself, I will eat cereal or an individual frozen pizza instead of cooking something for myself.

Sometimes I'll make something that the rest of the family doesn't like - potato soup, for example. But usually, no. I'm more likely to arrange to meet a friend for dinner.

I'm home alone frequently at dinner time. I usually skip. Food is a social activity for me. I would rather go to bed hungry than cook for just me. Stupid I know but it's the truth.

Nope. Leftovers, frozen something or cereal are my go to's.
I'm not home alone that often right now, but it will definitely be the norm in about 4 years. I'm guessing I'll cook a little more when it's every nite.

Yes, I do. My husband works evenings, so we don't get to have dinner together that often. I still make a good dinner every night and we eat the leftovers for lunches.

That is a problem I am having this week. With my dh not here I just don't seem to want to eat. I have to though because me head starts to hurt if I don't. I don't like cooking for one.

Sometimes I do and when that happens, it's often fish because I'm the only one who likes it.

Yep. I throw something on the grill sometimes or do a quick stir fry. Other times it's leftovers or just fruit and granola or similar.

Sometimes I do because there are a lot of things that I love that the rest of my family doesn't, so sometimes I do take advantage of being home alone to eat sushi or make a couple soups they don't like, or a quinoa salad I love and they won't touch...or eggs....my husband will only eat eggs scrambled and then covered in enough cheese that you can't taste the eggs anymore and he hates when I make hard boiled eggs.

Yes I do, but my life revolves around whatever I'm having for a meal. I love to meal plan and cook, I know others aren't the same way.

I have not been home alone in twelve years. I just realized that in answering this. I have been home with kids but without my husband, and my husband has been home without me, but I don't think either of us has been home for dinner in the house alone since we had kids. Funny.
Back when I often was by myself, I did often cook simple meals alone. Pasta with pesto, that sort of thing.

On the occasions that I am alone at dinner time, I try to plan something that is a treat for me. Planning ahead makes me a happier camper for those alone times.

Most of the time I eat something like a bowl of cereal or take out. But sometimes I take advantage of being able to cook something I know my kids won't like. I also use the opportunity to try a new recipe because it's only me that will be hungry if it doesn't work out.

Yes. Absolutely. I love cooking and if I didn't cook well for myself, I'd never get recipes tested and that sort of thing. Some days I'll skimp and cheat a little bit but most time I cook full out.

It depends sometimes I'll just have eggs but other times I'll get inspired to make a nice meal just for me.

I'm so rarely home alone for dinner, that I look at it as a treat to eat cereal. Added plus of no mess.
If it were more often, I'd definitely be cooking for just me. As it is now, I'm only alone at dinner once every few months.

My DH works nights a lot so dinner alone is normal. I hate cooking just for me and I won't..simple and fast for me. But if I think he can run home for dinner while working I will make something or bring it to station.

No way. I do leftovers, or something easy like peanut butter toast or grabbing something out or even microwave popcorn or other junk.

This is something that I am working on. I am alone for dinner a number of days, and with my oldest going off to college soon-I realized recently that my youngest isn't that much further behind him. There will come a day soon where I am home alone every night for dinner.
I just had a conversation with my mom about not feeling like cooking for "just me" and she asked me why I didn't think *I* was worth cooking for-that I spent years thinking that my children were worth cooking for, why was I not worth the same consideration?
It made me stop and think. I have always enjoyed cooking for the kids. I cook mostly from scratch (not always, but mostly) and I spend a lot of time planning meals that I think they will enjoy. Up until recently, when they weren't home I generally snacked for meals, or skipped them entirely.
But I realized that I can't spend the rest of my life not eating because I don't have anyone to cook for. I think maybe I do deserve to be fed just as well?
So I am learning to cook for just me. It is a learning curve for sure, but eventually I will get it.
