Check in here as often as you need for support over the next week! Dh and I had matching cups today. I accidently took a drink of his and gagged from the taste of the soda. I didn't even swallow it because it tasted so foul! How are you guys doing?

Day 10 here! I am feeling much better than my lethargy thread yesterday. I have more energy for sure. Not sure why, but I'll take it! I had lots of water today and 2 glasses of tea for dinner. I went to the movies today and skipped drinks all together. I think that will be my biggest challenge. My DH and I usually share a large DC during a movie. Now, if he gets one, it's more pricey if I get my own. SO, I guess I'll have to sneak in a bottle of water. Other than that, things are going quite well here. I am looking forward to my weigh-in this week and telling my Dr. on the 31st that I quit! She will be so proud! Keep it up, ladies!!!

Hey guys! Doing well. Still needing an iced tea each day to help ease head/lethargy, but for the most part, I'm feeling good. I posted a question on yesterday's thread but it was late at night so I'll repost here on this thread. I'm interested to hear your thoughts/plans:
"Do you all think you'll ever have soda again? Are you afraid to have one in the future? I'm unsure of how I feel. I do know that I never want to buy it and have it in the house and chain drink it like I used to. It would be nice to have one once in a while when I'm out, but I'm so afraid of drinking one and then relapsing. Anyone else feel like that?"

I think I'm going to have to avoid it forever. I've quit before and relapsed-always after telling myself "Oh, I'll just have one." If I get past the first few sips, I start liking it again

I will have carbonated drinks like LaCroix brand or maybe a Diet Sprite, but because of blood pressure issues, I am going to TRY to avoid it forever. No need to try this hard and have a relapse. There are many other things I can drink that are better for me, so I am going to do my darndest to stay away from it. We shall see! We will have Diet Coke in our house as long as my DH drinks it. I have not even had a day where I have been tempted, so I think I will be fine having it in the house.

Had a good day today without it. Went on a roller skating trip with the camp I work at and brought my own frozen water bottle with me. Wasn't even tempted when the kids had soda with their pizza. Baseball game tonight and I got a 44 ounce cup of ice from Wawa and poured sparkling blackberry water over it. Tonight I am having a crystal light iced tea because I wanted something a little sweet. Getting easier everyday.
Monica, I don't think I will ever be able to have soda anymore. I gave up cigarettes 19 years ago by throwing them out and never went back. Not even once. I think just not having it again is the way to go for me.

I had two cans worth. The first was gross. The second one was better. I wish it had tasted gross too so it would make me want it less. If I hadn't been offered the second one at my siblings house I would have had only the one. I've just got to try harder.
Glad to hear people are making positive progress. Way to go.

Thanks for the responses to my question. At first I was thinking I could handle it in the future, but now I'm thinking maybe I can't. Maybe on a smaller scale it's like being addicted to alcohol or tobacco. Once you quit, you usually quit for good. I wonder how many people have quit soda only to relapse, and by relapse I mean go back to their old excessive habits. I never thought it would be this complicated, but deep down inside I knew I was addicted, physically addicted, because if I ran out, I had to get in my car and go get some. Doing without was not an option. Just thinking out loud.
Today had been good. I did drink two iced teas, but I did not crave soda at all. Today marks the one week mark for me. Yay!
Hang in there everyone! Did everyone make it through so far?

You are all doing so well! It does get easier as time goes on, so hang in there.
To answer Monica* - I quit a terrible DC soda habit, cold turkey, back in November. At first, I knew I couldn't have any soda in the house at all, much less even have a sip. The sound of a tab top opening was like Pavlov's dog!
When my DD and I traveled to Mexico at the end of June, I consciously decided to drink DC that week. I knew I wasn't going to be drinking alcohol all the time, and I was leery about the water. Bottled water wasn't always available/offered where we went. The soda was just OK; not "all that" for me any more. I had no issues going back to water when we returned home. But, I never had the caffeine withdrawals that a lot of people do.
Only you will know if you can just have one. Now is way too early, but six months to a year out, you might be able to have an occasional soda, or not. This probably sounds silly, but I'm just amazed and proud that I quit what you called a "chain drinking" soda habit. I don't ever want to go back to that again.

Today was the first day I had serious thoughts of giving in. Not sure why, but around dinner time, I just really, really wanted to have some DP. I almost gave in, but toughed it out. Not sure why it has taken so long for the cravings to set in

Congrats to everyone! I can't even remember the last time I had soda. I was so tempted when we went to our sons home for 4th of July.
He had Coke in the house. I can't tell you how I fantasized about having a Coke! I won't go into the details! haha
I stayed the course and drank my water! Hang in there everyone.

I fell off the wagon on Wednesday. I was hauling STBX's stuff out of the house, it was so hot I was sweating buckets. I hadn't ate much all day and I got really shaky. I still had 2 cans in the fridge so I cracked one open to get some sugar in me. It still tasted great, but I haven't had the urge for more. I'm doing good with my standard coffee and bottled water since then.

I had a Sprite yesterday because I was feeling sick to my stomach. Other than that, it's been good. Now tomorrow, we have a family reunion. The coke thing shouldn't be hard, but who knows what I will eat! Some of those ladies are fabulous cooks!

I wish people would stop offering me a diet coke though. I really think a lot of people are shocked that I have lasted this long.

Day 13 here: I did great this weekend! I usually drink a lot of DC on the weekends. I had lots of water as well as 3 glasses of tea today. I am still using Sweet n Low in my tea, but have cut back to 1/2 a packet per glass instead of a whole one. I went to 2 movies this week and did not even crave a DC like I thought I would. I didn't have anything at the first one and had a 34 oz. water bottle at the one today! My Dr. appointment is this Wednesday. She will be so proud of me! My BP has been on the low side of normal, so I'm crossing my fingers that she takes me off my meds.

I am now coming to the end of day 4 and I`m doing quite well with it. Barely even tempted right now, for some reason. I think I will be able to drink pop at a restaurant or someone else`s home. that doesn`t trigger me to go shopping. As long as I don`t buy enough for myself that I have leftovers, I think I`m ok.

Checking in. I'm doing great too. It's almost becoming something I don't even think about, which is really nice after all the obsessing. Yesterday, though, I had a wake up call. I bought 6-8 bottles of zero calorie sparking water and when I got home and poured a glass, it tasted sooooo sweet (and not very good to be honest). I knew something was up. I looked at the label and it had aspartame and that phenyl-something or other that are both in diet Coke. So basically it was diet soda without the coloring in my book. I quickly poured it down the drain. I will have to be more careful in the future and be sure to read labels, because what looks like sparkling water isn't always.
I am still drinking some iced tea, but hope to cut that back. I feel like I might be using it too much as a crutch. I think I can survive on less.
Keep up the great work everyone!

Happy Sunday! Still going strong! I cannot believe how much better I feel overall without all that junk. Walking and pilates everyday is helping me also. My husband asked me if I lost weight this morning! Guess it is working! I did notice that my shirts are fitting differently. My goal is to go back to work with 20 lbs less of myself in September! No cravings anymore even when my kids are having a soda with dinner. I just have my water over ice and I am happy.
Keep up the great work everyone! So proud of all of us =)

Backslide for me yesterday. Sitting out in the sun watching the kids swim, water just wasn't cutting it. I feel back on track today.
I hope people are continuing to do well. If not, don't beat yourself up about it, keep trying.

Good job getting back on track eastcoastpea! I agree, nothing comes from beating yourself up. We're all human and thus very capable of slips and falls. The important thing is to never give up. I do WW and I remind myself of this every day!

Monica*, try La Croix. They don't have anything in them. They are pretty bitter, but I've only tried one flavor. I will still drink them if I need carbonation. You get used to them, I think. LOL

Yes, Sparkling water does not equal seltzer water. You can get the flavored seltzer but it is not nearly as sweet as the flavored water that usually has aspartame or splenda.
I've only found it at WalMart, but Skinny Girl has water enhancers that are made with Stevia. A simple squirt in some seltzer is great! Also, Walmart just came out with the powdered drink mix made with Stevia. It is delicious and you can add it to regular water OR seltzer (I've done both)
I'll be two months next weekend!
Also - if you feel like to need to give in to a craving, grab a six pack of organic cola, at least its all natural and it'll sooth that craving. You won't feel like you need to buy it all the time because its really expensive...lol.

Giving up diet soda entirely has been such a huge challenge for me! I just can't seem to take it completely away. I'll go months without one, but I always miss it and then I'll go to lunch with old friends or something and the diet soda gets ordered. I don't know why I miss it so, I just can't find any drink I like as much. The bad thing is, the artificial sweeteners make my joints ache, yet I still indulge sometimes - crazy! I seem to have self-discipline about every other thing in my life, it's truly my Achilles heel.

I gave up soda 11 months ago. And yes, I am afraid of relapsing. At this point, I am also sort of wearing it as a badge of honor..."it has been x days since my last one".
When I gave them up, I also gave up all white sugar and processed foods. I went cold turkey and it was a rough first week. About two weeks into "eating clean", I decided that I could have just one if I wanted since I didn't plan to give them up forever. I only drank about 1/4 of the can and within 10 minutes I was SO sick. That scared me away from having any for awhile.

I was so addicted to pepsi that I tried 5 times to stop drinking it. On the fifth time I succeeded. It was when MIO first came out. I don't like fruit flavors so it took me a while to get used to fruit flavored water. But I was drinking 8 or 9 2 liters a week of pepsi and knew I needed to stop. I Started getting the 20 ounce bottles and I could only drink 1 a day then I went to the 12 ounce cans and I was allowed to drink one every other day. Then I went to the 8 ounce cans and would only drink one 1 time a week. after the 12 pack of the 8 ounce was gone I was hating the flavor. I found myself really liking the mio flavored water. I now have pepsi when I crave it. yes I do have cravings for it every so often. I will buy a bottle usually a 20 ouncer and it will take me all day to drink it. but I am telling myself why am I drinking this it really don't taste that good. but I know if I don't drink it when I crave it I will go crazy and end up drinking more of my husbands rootbeer or the 7 up and sprite we keep around for mixed drinks.
I do know that my body feels better not drinking all that pepsi.....
