On the back of his shoulder. He's had a small black spot there for quite a while, but it's gotten larger. It's now the size of a pencil eraser, multi colored, uneven border.
All the things that make me panic.
I called the dermatologist today (I was just there about a week ago for my 6 month skin screening...I had melanoma in 2000) and he has an appointment for next Thursday.
So now my eldest sees the dermatologist every 6 months (she's 20 and has had 3 areas of concern that were removed...now with scarring on her back, the back of her thigh, and her belly) and now my DS will most likely be forming a "relationship" with the dermatologist.
**UPDATE** Home from the appointment with the dermatologist. She looked at it, and without even a second thought, started measuring it (and not only the diameter etc but the exact location) and made the decision it was coming off for biopsy today. Probably won't get results until Monday, Aug 11, because she'll be out of the office all next week...so even if it's back sooner from the lab, we won't know.
So now...of my 3 kids, she's removed something from 2 of them (and 20yo DD has had 3 areas removed for biopsy)
DS told me in the car that he was quite surprised she did it today. I told him that I would've been more surprised if she DIDN'T remove it today.
So there's the warning...you must be vigilant on your own skin and be aware for new moles or skin changes, but keep a close eye on your kids as well.
AND WEAR SUNSCREEN AND VISIT A DERMATOLOGIST AT LEAST ONCE A YEAR FOR A FULL BODY SCREENING.

Oh, I really hope it's nothing concerning. However, it's good that you are taking it seriously and having a dermatologist look at him. Saying a prayer!

Prayers that it's nothing or that you found it early. That must be very worrisome for you.

I'm sorry that this is happening in your family! My MIL seems to have several places removed every couple of years. She is a breast cancer survivor and keeps a close watch on herself. It seems like you are also very cautious and diligent about checking you and your family closely. This is great for catching and treating early! Positive thoughts for you!

After I made the appt today, I told DS when it was. I also told him that he was most likely NOT going to have a full body exam next week. (but added that she would probably suggest we schedule an appt for that...but the wait for that is probably months and I don't want this spot on his shoulder to wait months...so we'll go twice)
ANYWAY...when I told him there would be no full body exam he was relieved...because he knows that she looks all over...even where the sun doesn't shine.
I know it's on his mind...because last night when I was looking at it closely, he looked too and agreed that it had changed...and he's the one that actually asked for me to call for an appt.
Drama camp starts on Monday...so hopefully Thursday will be here before we know it.

(((hugs)))
No matter what it is, you (and he) are on the right path, already making a doctor's appointment. You take it in steps, and it will work out.

Try not to worry. Most of the time, the results come back okay. It is good that you found it and took him in.

I too would have been surprised if she hadn't taken it right then and there for biopsy. I adore my dermatologist. She doesn't even measure -- if she doesn't like the looks of it, it comes off. I have a LOT of moles, and she's removed 6 or 7. Only one of them came back as 'borderline myeloma', so she had to cut more out. I go in for a mole check every year.
