I just purchased my Silhouette Portrait and about to get some oracle 651. Do I need any specific tools? I have never worked with vinyl before so I'm pretty clueless. Thanks

A piercer tool is helpful for weeding away excess vinyl and a craft knife or X-Acto with a sharp tip can be helpful if a cut line isn't totally complete where it starts and stops. A hard plastic squeegee (think flat car window scraper thing) works great to get air bubbles out when you're applying the vinyl to your surface. And you'll need some type of transfer tape.
Just so you know, Oracal 651 is permanent vinyl suitable for outdoor use. For interior walls Oracal 631 is what you want because it can be removed without damaging the wall.

Thanks so much! And I had no idea about the different types of vinyl so double thanks! 651 is good for decorating things like glasses. Only hand wipe clean though. Some have had success with it in a dishwasher but I wouldn't risk it! You'll love working with vinyl. It can go on so many things.

My favorite tools - a good sharp exacto knife (and some bandaids, because I stab myself), a long corsage pin, good transfer tape (NOT contact paper), something to burnish the vinyl onto the transfer tape, and to burnish it off the transfer tape. I got a nice one from API for free when I ordered some vinyl - but the Pampered Chef scraper is also a great one. I love working with Oracal 631. It is less sticky (removable) and is a little more forgiving when first learning to use vinyl. When you go to weed vinyl, the 651 can drape back and stick on itself SO easy - so make sure you have added weeding lines. I like to put rectangles or circles around the parts of my cuts, so I am not dealing with a big chunk of sticky vinyl when weeding. Have fun! It is super addictive!
