300,000 kids in US & 10K in CAN have Juvenile Arthritis

July is Juvenile Arthritis (JA) awareness month. My daughter is one of 300,000 kids in the US have JA. Many people have no idea that kids get arthritis, too. JA is a serious, painful, autoimmune disease that causes inflammation, damaged joints, stunted growth, and even blindness. In severe cases, JA can cause death.
Children take chemo drugs, steroids, and biologic drugs to try to put the disease into remission.
There is a shortage of pediatric Rheumatologists. 14 states don't have a single specialist to treat kids with JA. JA is not the same as RA, and seeing an adult Rheumy is not preferred. Most adult Rheumies are not versed in treating kids.

Many areas hold Jingle Bell Runs in December. If you are a runner, please participate and add a bell to your shoes for my Kasey. You can find a run in your area on the Arthritis Foundation website. Donations go for research, camps for kids with JA, and the national conference for families living with JA. Our family was blessed with a scholarship to the conference earlier this month and it was so meaningful for us to get to meet other families and gain more knowledge. My daughter got to meet other kids with JA and feel normal.
