July is Juvenile Arthritis (JA) awareness month. My daughter is one of 300,000 kids in the US have JA. Many people have no idea that kids get arthritis, too. JA is a serious, painful, autoimmune disease that causes inflammation, damaged joints, stunted growth, and even blindness. In severe cases, JA can cause death. Children take chemo drugs, steroids, and biologic drugs to try to put the disease into remission. There is a shortage of pediatric Rheumatologists. 14 states don't have a single specialist to treat kids with JA. JA is not the same as RA, and seeing an adult Rheumy is not preferred. Most adult Rheumies are not versed in treating kids. Please watch this video and see the faces of JA. It has some facts about JA along with photos. My daughter is at 7:59 in the video. m.youtube.com/watch?v=TGg7-m3Vsxw&feature=youtu.beMany areas hold Jingle Bell Runs in December. If you are a runner, please participate and add a bell to your shoes for my Kasey. You can find a run in your area on the Arthritis Foundation website. You can also donate to the Arthritis Foundation www.kintera.org/site/apps/ka/sd/donorcustom.asp?c=pkI2KfMUItF&b=8324237Donations go for research, camps for kids with JA, and the national conference for families living with JA. Our family was blessed with a scholarship to the conference earlier this month and it was so meaningful for us to get to meet other families and gain more knowledge. My daughter got to meet other kids with JA and feel normal. Thank you!

Thanks for posting about this. I had no idea how many kids go through that at such a young age!

Bumping this up. Dd just left with dh to make the 1:45 min drive to the Children's Hospital in Kansas City for joint injections. Today she gets steroids injected into both knees, both shoulders, the back of her left hand, and as many of her fingers as the doctor feels inflammation. The injections are a short term method of controlling inflammation and pain.
We are currently waiting for insurance approval on a biologic drug. This will put her to two injected drugs each week, in addition to her pills and topical creams.

Thank you for sharing. Your daughter is beautiful! I'm sorry she has to deal with so much.
I got diagnosed with RA at age 49 and even then, so many thought I was "too young" to get it. It really is thought of as an "old persons" disease. And even having the word Arthritis in the name can be misleading as so many see it as just an issue with a joint or two, rather than a painful, debilitating auto immune disease. It can wreck havoc on your body. So having it so young can make it that much tougher.
Sending good thoughts to you and Kasey! I hope her injections go well today.

We are praying the injections help and Enbrel is approved soon. I hate the idea of giving her more toxic medications, but the alternative is worse. Kasey is afraid to hope Enbrel will work for her. She's been in pain for a long time.

Thanks for sharing. One of my DD's close friends at school has JA. I didn't know about the Jingle Bell runs. I will definitely keep my eyes open for one in my area.
