I can tell you that we purchased ours in January 2000. We got it on an after Christmas/New Years sale. It's a Proform brand and it's similar to what you find in a gym. My DH runs on ours almost daily, so he wanted something fairly heavy duty that would survive the pounding. ETA - ours is powered not manual! IMO, manual treadmills are really hard to use. Maybe it's just me but I feel like you have to "push" your foot down to make the conveyor go. And it's exhausting. There are a couple of powered ones at Sears for less than $300 Treadmill, if you can swing it. I don't know how good they are or if the fold. No matter what you buy, try it out before you purchase or make sure you can return it for any reason. Here is link to comparisons that I found doing a search => Treadmill compares

I would encourage you to look at a second hand treadmill through an ad, treadmill, Craigslist, etc. I just worry that the models that you linked are REALLY cheap. I think you will get more bang for your buck with a model with more features and that is built sturdier.
I personally like the automatic programs that increase the incline/speed automatically. I can just watch my shows and the machine tells me what to do. I'm not a huge fan of athletics, so I like that it's automatic and I just do it. The heart rate monitor is helpful for knowing if your intensity is at the right level. And of course, a timer is good, too!

I've been through a few in my life (I love to walk), and my advice is to rethink manual ones.

I'm really surprised everyone is against the manual ones. Budget aside, the electronic ones seem intimidating and the ones I've seen are HUGE. Maybe there are smaller ones and I just haven't spotted them yet. I would encourage you to look at a second hand treadmill through an ad, treadmill, Craigslist, etc. I just worry that the models that you linked are REALLY cheap. I think you will get more bang for your buck with a model with more features and that is built sturdier. Good idea. I did just go take a look on Craigslist and there are only a few. They're huge and wouldn't fit in my car or my house and are running $350+. But I will keep looking, you never know what might pop up.

My treadmill is great for holding laundry, collecting dust, and taking up room. I want to buy a treadmill, too, but this is my fear!! The spot I have picked out for it is right near the laundry room...

I agree that a manual treadmill is not likely to be good. I have a professional quality like (like you'd see at a gym). But I honk you could still Get a decent one for much much less and not go manual.

I agree with the others. The manual ones are not a good investment.
Do you have a rec center or club near you with a track? That would be a better option if you can't get a power one. Also if you can wait a month or two, all the new year resolution treadmills will be up for sale.
That said , I have an OLD proform and it is still going. It doesn't have the fancy new stuff, but it works well.

Also if you can wait a month or two, all the new year resolution treadmills will be up for sale. Good point. I work right across the street from a huge gym. I keep trying to tell myself to join it but I know I won't go. I don't like the crowds of people and the atmosphere at gyms. If I got a treadmill at home there wouldn't be anything to keep me from using it.

We have a nice treadmill which I use it daily. I would not buy a manual treadmill. I would look for a good used one.
I would not invest in any exercise equipment unless I was absolutely sure I would use it. Can you get a few guest passes to the gym near your house and try out the exercise equipment and make sure you enjoy the treadmill? I love it, but some people hate it. My best friend loves the elliptical machine and I absolutely hate it.
You said you are interested in having an incline feature, but a trainer once told me a lot of people misuse that feature. They increase the incline, and then lean forward, which, according to him, defeats the purpose of the incline. I personally never use the incline feature. I work on increasing my speed and time spent on the treadmill. I think it would be hard to know which features are important to you unless you try working out on a treadmill first.
Good luck finding the right treadmill! I love using the treadmill & I hope you do too.

My treadmill is great for holding laundry, collecting dust, and taking up room. When I mentioned to my cardiologist that I was thinking of buying a treadmill for Christmas, she just smiled and shook her head gently. She said most people don't end up using them, adding that her mother bought one and it's a great place to hang all her handbags!
I still want one, but I think waiting for a second hand one will be a good idea for me. I definitely will get an electronic one, I have used one at the gym and found it quite easy to use.

Go for the large, expensive ones, anything else will most likely be a dust collector. Treadmills have to be wide enough to run comfortably on, and powerful enough to give you a good workout. If they're not you'll just be annoyed every time you step on it.
You can find good sales or second hand treadmills if you're lucky.

Why can't you walk in the dark? Is your neighborhood unsafe? No street lights? If I didn't walk in the dark I'd never walk at all (and my dogs wouldn't get walked, either). I bring my phone and I have a little can of pepper spray that attaches to my key chain, but honestly, walking through an urban residential neighborhood, I've never had an issue. I always see other people out walking or running, too, whether I do it at 5 AM or 9 PM.
I only ask because I hate the treadmill and know I'd never walk on it if I had one.

I run at night now that it's dark earlier. I have a reflective vest, a handheld flashlight, and a blinking light for my back. I prefer that over the thought of using a treadmill

I know I've tried a manual treadmill somewhere and there is really no comparison to powered ones. Day and night.

I was going to recommend a nicer one as well.
I would keep my eye on Craigslist after the new year when everyone is on their cleaning spree!

I started with a simple used machine until I knew I was committed. Do you have a sports equipment consignment store nearby? I feel more secure buying there than Craigslist, because they've checked it out.
Next I bought a new one purchased at a specialty fitness equipment store. I go through phases of using it regularly and then taking a break. It was expensive investment, but worth it.
The negative is its size. I like having a wide /long running platform, but it's a hulk.

That they make great clothes holders, wish I could say I USED mine, probably through the years bought and stored several in the dreaded basement.

I have one that is not at all what you're looking for, but I really like having it. No excuses for not getting my steps in. Mine is a really nice electronic one, just below gym quality, and yes, it is big. It does fold up but that doesn't really reduce the space needed for it. It is a Livestrong model I got less than half price when they were discontinuing that branding due to all the Lance Armstrong drama. As I was researching them, the lower end ones definitely had a lot of limitations in terms of speed, weight limit (I think some were as low as 200 lbs, which may not be an issue for you but if a spouse wants to use it or something), and the amount of "cushion" to the deck. There are a lot of treadmills on sales on Craigslist in our area. Less this time of year I imagine, but some good deals to be had. Anyway, whatever one you get, I highly recommend this SurfShelf if you want to watch Netflix or whatever on a laptop or ipad. I wouldn't be able to do a lot of typing while on the treadmill, but perfect for watching: www.amazon.com/SurfShelf-Treadmill-Desk-Laptop-Holder/dp/B001M04RBKAlso, I recently decorated the area the treadmill is in and made it a more inviting space, and that made a big difference for me in willingness to use it.

I wouldn't waste my time and money with a manual. With the new year here, I would take advantage of the gym across the street, they are bound to have some good bargains. Try it for a couple of months, even if you only use it for the treadmill.
I have an expensive electronic treadmill, and I still prefer walking outside.

My neighborhood is safe but I just don't feel comfortable. We don't have street lights and I worry not only about creepy people but cars, dogs, etc. I also miss months at a time because of the weather. It's usually way too hot even in the mornings for me to want to go. A treadmill keeps me in the comfort of my home where it's always the perfect temperature. I am going to hold off on purchasing anything for now and keep researching. If I can find an inexpensive electric one I may buy that. I really thought a manual one would be better! The things you learn.

The things you learn. Could you talk a co-worker into going to the gym w/ you either before or after work or even during your lunch hour? It sounds like you are motivated to start working out and there are probably others in your office who feel the same way.

For me, I don't have the option of walking long-distance outside for now. I had foot surgery a couple of months ago, and a knee that is giving me issues. The possibility of getting stranded far from home is very real, because when my foot or knee decide I'm done, I'm DONE. Hopefully by the end of 2016, I will be back to walking outdoors. Right now I'm just happy to get back onto my treadmill after thinking I was going to have to give it up forever.
Hope you find a good one, OP!
