Totally random but I just found out a dork actually means a whale's penis. You may be silly but I would venture to say you are NOT a whale's penis. I used to always call myself a dork too.

Not to be all neener neener neener on you all- but I'm going to the reunion this weekend. My friend and I are hopping in the car Saturday morning for the 3 hour drive to Walnut Grove. We both loved Almanzo, so we are super excited he is going to be there! If I can figure it out, I'll post some pics when we get home. www.walnutgrove.org/Reunion.htm

OMG! I would love to go to that!! I have read those books so many times. I was so disappointed a couple of years ago when I referenced lye soap and Little House in one of my Chemistry classes and not a single student had read the books.

I would love to go to either one of those events!
Did any of you read "Laura; The life of Laura Ingalls Wilder", by Donald Zochert?"
I had an old paperback copy and found it fascinating as it follows the real family's path using land records and census records. It mentions things she condensed or consolidated or completely left out in their trek westward.

Oh I hope I can go! I'm within a few hours or so of Walnut Grove. I just sent the link to my siblings to see if anyone wants to go. We reference the show almost every time we are together. We grew up on and we still love it!

Julie beat me to it. It's in Walnut Grove and happens every year. It's fun and totally plays into my love of reading the books and recognizing all the places that she references in the books.

Every weekend in July, the town of Walnut Grove, Minnesota has Little House on the Prairie days. You can visit historical and memorabilia sites and they have a live outdoor pageant with horses, wagons, etc. It was awesome, but bring a lot of bug spray. They have "Laura" and "Nellie" look alike contests too. We went a few years ago and still get the postcard and I got the one that mentioned the reunion. We talked about going for it, but it didn't work out. If you go, stay in the town of Marshall which is about a 45 minute drive away, there are a couple of newer hotels with pools - there are smaller hotels and B&B's in the immediate vicinity of Walnut Grove. Here's the photo of DD (second from left) and her friends when we went 3 years ago. It was a lot of fun, we love the books and shows and will go again.
How fun and your photo and the girls are adorable!!!

Yes, I have a copy and have read it as well. I remember once hearing that she was asked, "why didn't you put such and such in your novels" and she replied, "I didn't know I was writing history"

I read somewhere that the editors had her age herself in the LHIT Big Woods, as they said no one could have memories from such an early age. But with a father who was a story teller and no TV and few books, I'll bet those stories were told over and over. That's how she remembered them.
