Oh good grief what the heck have I gotten myself into?!?!? The hardest part is figuring out where I am with my photos. It looks like I haven't printed a single photo from 2015. Those photos aren't even uploaded to Shutterfly. Then there are all the photos on my iPhone and of course don't forget about Facebook where I'm tagged in tons of kid/sports photos from fellow parents. Then if the black hole wasn't deep enough I gotta actually get these photos into albums - after I figure out where I'm at in all my ongoing albums.
I know I know.....baby steps, but quite honestly I need to be taking gigantic steps if I'm ever going to see the light of day again.

Scrapping was so much easier when we were using P&S, or 35mm cameras, wasn't it? My biggest struggle or hurdle with scrapping is the pictures. Like you, they're all over the place--my phone, DH's phone, each of my kids' phones, etc. It's really put a damper on the whole hobby for me to be honest. I can't keep track of what's where. Our niece gave us an ornament she made for Christmas using a picture of DS and DD together. Both DH and I asked her where she got the picture; it was a nice one. She got it off my DD's Facebook. Really? We've never even seen it, and what was shocking was they both willingly took the picture together, were both smiling, while at the Homecoming dance. I can't even get them to stand together, and they ran into each other there and did it on their own, and didn't even give it to us?

Congrats on having the courage to try! The organizing, editing is my most unfavorite part, too. If you are only 1 year behind, though that's certainly doable. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

I try to pull my photos and stories together once per month. I used to collate at shuttercal.com, but they went under this year. I have the same issue - photos are on several devices and cameras, photos/stories are on facebook or other social media, or in email or IM or text ... it's all so overwhelming.
Last year I got behind by several months and had to catch up. I did it by going backwards. I started with December, and then did November, etc. until I was caught up. December was easiest because it was recent, and my success there spurred me on. By the time I got to July I was happy that I had loads of things from the year and didn't care as much if I was missing things, I just needed to be finished. Maybe that would work for you.

I get my photos printed as I take them, but in a batch if you know what I mean. Like if DS has a photo on facebook I download and edit it, and if I have another event coming within a week or two that I will take photos, then I hold it, but otherwise, I get it printed.
Then I try to put all my recent photos in a bin and start gathering any supplies I have to scrap them with. This weekend at a crop I will work on photos from Thanksgiving to New Years.
I have many years of old photos to work on but I don't take many photos like I used to so I try to stay current and work on other stuff in between.
If I was in your circumstance I would get the photos at least organized online in one place, and then decide if you are going to scrap chronologically or by theme or by kid, whatever. Then pick one group, like say, Christmas, and do those layouts.
You might also like to do some kind of pocket scrapping of some of the photos to get them into albums.

I started scrapbooking 17 years ago. I have many, many, many completed albums. I actually do have some pretty good organizational methods in place. I just hadn't printed the 2015 photos. I've been working all day on gathering them, uploading to Shutterfly and ordering prints. To be honest after 17 years I am tired. Very few friends/family scrapbook anymore and there isn't a crop to be found. I have a great scrapbooking room in the house, but just no mojo to work in there.

I understand what you mean. If I didn't have my local crops at area churches I wouldn't scrap at home. I have a scraproom piled with stuff. It is hard to keep it going after so many years. No mojo at home for me either.
My 24 year old recently pulled an album from 2000 to show me something and said, "There's no way I can keep all these albums when you're gone." I feel in some ways like I have burdened them with their lives entirely scrapbooked in tons of albums.

Are you doing traditional scrapping or PL? I can't imagine facing a year of photos for layouts! Good on you, if that's your goal! If it's PL, then I might be able to offer advice. I started PL mid-2015 and was so pleased with it that I decided to go back and do 2014 but my digital photos were a mess. I downloaded all my instagram photos because those represented big moments for us or particularly cute pictures of my dog and put them in dropbox organized by month. I also added 2 or 3 photos that weren't on instagram that I knew I wanted to include. Then I started using the PL app* and worked from January to December, grouping photos as it made sense. I finished in about a week of working during downtime on my phone- at work, in the car, watching tv, etc. I still need to print out the pages, but the they are done! *this is not a paid advertisement! And I don't use PL app for 2015 or 2016, I only found it really useful to catch up on old stuff when printing individual photos was overwhelming. It also kind of sounds like you're not getting much joy out of this process any more. Maybe changing it up would be welcome? Hope this helps! Please let us know how your back-scrap goes

I feel in some ways like I have burdened them with their lives entirely scrapbooked in tons of albums. For what it's worth, I don't think your kid meant that. I lost my mom several years ago when I was 25. She wasn't a scrapbooker but if she was, I would cherish those albums! It's definitely not a burden.

I was in the same spot last year. I only had one friend left that scrapbooked (and she did very occassionally), scrapbooked for over 20 years, but just got burnt out. My son is only 14 so I didn't want to stop, so I sold all of it and switched to digital. It got my creative juices flowing again, and I'm actually in the process of changing all his scrapbooks to digital because I like the look a lot better (and want easy extra copies) I just did over a dozen pages this weekend, and should be finished sometime this year, then I can just do photos as they come up. It's nice not having to print anything until I'm ready.

I hate keeping up with photo printing! I agree, it was easier when you dropped off the film at Target and then just picked up the photos.
I'd just scrapbook what you feel like. I put my layouts in chronological order in the albums, but I don't scrapbook chronologically. I just do what I feel like doing.

My 24 year old recently pulled an album from 2000 to show me something and said, "There's no way I can keep all these albums when you're gone." I feel in some ways like I have burdened them with their lives entirely scrapbooked in tons of albums. I would love to have scrapbooks from my childhood, but not 15, 20, etc of them. I do think there comes a point when it's just to much. I'm not a prolific scrapbooker, but did have 6 very thick, heavy 12x12 albums for my son by the time he was 12. As I had mentioned in my previous post, I'm in the process of converting them to digital, but another reason for it is I can make much thinner photobooks. When I'm done I'm going to print a set out in 10x10 for myself in hardcover, then one for my son when he is an adult. I just found the 12x12 books to bulky to comfortably look at (though I still digiscrap in 12x12) As I've been redoing/converting them I also realized I scrapped things I didn't really care about just to have something to scrapbooks (photos of eating out at restuarants, pics of my kid trying out skates, on a trampoline). As I've been doing this, any pages I don't love the pics I just remove, I'm not bother doing them at all, and also I'm going from a lot of 2 pagers down to single pages for events, because how many pics of the same kids in different poses at birthday parties does he need? I've been trying to seriously downsize my life and those heavy thick books just weren't working for me. After inheriting 5 large totes of pictures when my mom passed, I'm determined to leave my son with a reasonable and enjoyable amount of pictures/books. I do wonder if a lot of the people creating these big books, and in such large amount expect their kids to take them someday? I have friends who had bookcases full of scrapbooks for their kids (of course none of them actually even scrapbook now, so they have lots books of their younger years.)

I don't expect the kids to take them when I'm gone. They can if they want to, but it's not an obligation. It's not something I worry about. These are my memories. My books. For me.

I no longer try to "keep up". I also don't scrap chronologically anymore. I scrap what I feel like, when I feel like it. The pages or books are for me. I do believe my kids enjoy them as well. What they do with them when I'm gone is totally up to them. I scrap because I enjoy the process. It is my hobby and meant to be enjoyable so it's nothing I feel I have to stress over.

When I gave up the idea that I had to work chronologically, it brought joy back into my scrapbooking. I now use photos that inspire me or I feel inspired to work with. And this comes from someone who thrives on order. I started with this hobby 22 years ago and I really feel like this is the only reason I'm still interested in it. It's supposed to be fun, not a chore.
I'd start by putting your photos in one place, wherever that might be. I wouldn't worry about whether they are printed. I would worry that I have a digital backup. As you're working, if you run across some photos that are inspiring, print those and get to work. When you've finished that creative project, start the process again.
And fwiw, if you're an Amazon Prime member, they now offer free unlimited storage for digital photos. I've backed up all of my digital photos to their cloud. It was very quick surprisingly. If you get bogged down with the chore of organizing, you'll never get anything put into an album and you risk becoming frustrated or bored and quitting.

Start small. I've been scrapping for 13 years, but life evolves and my free time is much less. I currently work on a monthly project life spread, and try and make at least one layout from Ali E's story kit. I struggle some months to do this. Don't pressure yourself. Enjoy the hobby once again, and remember each piece you create is a piece you wouldn't have if you were still on your break.

Everything up there ^^^ Start small/cloud storage/don't worry about chronological (why don't you start with Christmas and work backwards for 2015?) RE: albums. I have had to make peace with knowing they are too many for the kids to want. But they all love them, so I imagine they'll go through and take meaningful layouts for themselves, and make their own life albums to keep. I'm happy because they all love them now and they are helping cement happy memories!

I recommend starting to scrap what is now instead of trying to play the catch up game. Then as you have time, go back and instead of trying to cover every event, try to pick the least amount of photos you can and fill in with writing the story.
In your case, a digital photobook (like from shutterfly), may work for you for 2015. It would also be easy to grab some photos off of facebook and your phone using their app. You can keep it really simple and streamlined.
One thing I've figured out over the years is I don't have to always do what I've done in the past. I've had years where there is two over flowing 12x12 albums, then I have years where I did maybe 30 layouts total. I definitely have learned to print less photos and tell the story with just a single shot.
After going thru old photo albums, I realized the pictures are nice, but what I was really missing was the stories. In turn, I have photoless layouts where I'm just trying to tell a story. You could even summarize the whole year if you wanted, almost like a "christmas letter", of all the sporting events and what team won what, which kid did this or that. Or divide layouts into months or seasons and include lots of small photos?
There is a lot of letting go practice with this hobby! good luck.

I do expect my kids to take my albums. They joke about it now, but I think they will mean a lot to them when that time comes.
Dd #2 is moving far away from me in the near future and I haven't told her yet, but I am preparing to pack hers in labled boxes and take them to her in time for the movers to put them on the truck.
I decided to do this because it would be a problem for her to transport them that far in the future. There are a lot of them, mostly her 4 kids. I think they should be able to keep them in their rooms with no problem. We'll see.

I had almost convinced myself to move away from chronological to save time and sanity ... and then over the holidays, we had the incident of "the chair."
It's a bit of a legend among my circle: My husband once broke a brand new folding chair at a friend's house during a double overtime basketball game, and the friend had him autograph it on the bottom because he didn't think anyone could get THAT excited about a game. We were fondly remembering that and trying to figure out when it happened.
I knew it was in my friend's former house. But when did they move?
My BFF's son remembered the incident well, so he needed to be at least grade school. But that's a wide age range. The fact that his sister did too, and she's five years younger, narrowed it some but not enough.
I was guessing 1994. The chair owners, when we pulled them into it, said they thought it happened in their new home, which was 2001. My BFF went upstairs to my scrapbooks and came back with the answer: 1999, previous home.
So I'm still scrapbooking chronologically because you never know when you need to settle a burning question like that on New Year's Eve.

I hear ya, OP! I will not even go into how many years of photos are on my computer and not developed. To give you an idea, however, I can tell you that when I went to empty my memory card before the holidays this year, I discovered last year's Christmas photos were still on it! The bad news of course, is that I haven't developed any photos in a very long time. The good news is that I have discovered that as my boys get older (they are 16 & 19), I take far fewer photos, so there's less hanging over me. Of course, I also haven't developed the FB photos from other people (like you said) or the ones from my tablet or phone or emails for the past few years. Is there anything beyond a black hole? Because if there is, that's where I am.

Yes I have, and it makes me smile that you noticed, myboysnme! Thank you! Right before Halloween I slipped in a parking lot. Pulled my hamstring & sprained my thumb. While my tablet was w/me during my time healing up in bed (it was like 4 weeks where I couldn't drive or hold a pen and I'm still not back to normal now!), it was too hard keeping the laptop there. My replies on Peas can get lengthy and I'm not very quick when tapping things out (much quicker typing) on the tablet, so I just sorta slipped away for awhile. But I'm feeling better, so you gals are stuck with me again!

Organizing, editing, and ordering pictures are what can sometimes make scrapping a chore for me. I'm nearing the point in time in my chronological scrapping where my pictures will be in multiple places and I'm dreading it. Add to that the fact that I'll have to upload hundreds of pictures from two cameras to a really slow computer and I'm dreading it even more. Not to mention the phones and Instagram! I'm hoping it's worse in my imagination than it will be in reality.

I'm another that gets bogged down by the editing and printing. I'm way, way, way behind with it and don't have a prayer of ever getting caught up. Oh well. So I just flip through and look for something that inspires me, try to edit and print those and roll with it. I would like to do a better job of setting aside time to work on my pages at least once a month this year. If it's on the calendar, I do a lot better with following through. Once I'm actually working on my stuff it's fun.
