I have been wanting a pressure cooker since the threads started on the old board. I am now ready to buy one but can't decide which would be best. I want at least a 6qt but am not sure which features are good and which just aren't necessary. For example, do you really need all of the different settings (stew, soup, meat, etc) or is high, low, brown, etc good enough? What about the slow cook option? If you have that, do you use it? Does it work well? What about a steaming rack? They don't all seem to come with that.
If you have a pressure cooker you love, let me know!

I have an Instant Pot and LOVE IT. I can't recommend it highly enough.
The brown setting is absolutely a must IMO. The slow cook option is nice to have, because then you don't need a separate slow cooker. The rest of the settings are for convenience, but aren't necessary.
Mine didn't come with a steaming rack, but I just use an expandable stainless steel steaming basket in th bottom when I need it (usually only when I make hard boiled eggs).
One thing that I love about the Instant Pot is the quality of the pot insert. It's a nice, heavy gauge stainless steel and is much better quality than the other pressure cookers I looked at. I won't use nonstick cookware, so that eliminated some of the options.
I only was interested in an electric one, but if you're considering stove top options, Fissler makes great ones.

I have a 6 qt Fagor that I really like. The only setting I ever use, besides the high and low pressure settings, is the browning feature. Mine has a nonstick inner pot but the instant pot has a stainless steel inner pot. I didn't want to spend that much on it since I don't use it a lot.

Adding that mine didn't come with a steam rack. I bought a silicone one on Amazon to use in it.

I have a regular, non-electric Presto 6 quart pressure cooker. We use it at least once a week. Great for soup or stews, beans and ham, pot roast, chicken, and dh just cooked some ribs in it tonight. He pressures them 'til they are tender, puts them on a rack in a roasting pan and seasons them, then bakes 'til they are crispy and brown. Yum! An electric/automatic one sounds really easy and convenient, but I've been using a stovetop model for 40 years with much success!

Do most recipes tell you to use high/low pressure or do they specify which setting?

Buy larger than you think you will need. Mine is electric but doesn't have the brown or slow cook feature but I've never thought I had to have those features. I bought mine several years ago from QVC.
