Hey Peas, I have a last minute trip booked this weekend. We do not have assigned seats at this time because they only have economy plus available which is additional $59. United Airline says wait till tomorrow's check in time and try for seats otherwise, check in at airport and they will assign me seats. I am worried we may get bumped off our flight. Not worried about not sitting together or even get middle because I knew going in we would probably have this issue. Any one ever bumped from their flight although they had tickets or have experience getting seats at airport? One airline rep says we will automatically be bumped up to the better seats because no other seats and to wait. I am a nervous Nellie since traveling with DD and don't want us to miss our flight and can't send her ahead since out of country and wouldn't want to leave her behind either. I guess I should just suck it up and pay the $. We do have travel insurance. Update 7/30 we made it! I actually had an upgraded seat but daughter was stuck in middle. I was going to give mine to hers but UA rep changed seats so we could sit next to each other. . Wish me luck getting back. Same situation and for some reason flights have been getting cancelled or missed. We have 7-8 flights leaving for US from Aruba and checking out is long!

On our trip home from Mexico, DD had assigned seating for both flights while mine said see agent. I had no idea that they overbooked and was not happy, since we had bought our tickets months in advance. They did offer to bump both of us, but I hadn't intended to sit in a Mexican airport longer than I had to. Luckily they offered me an economy plus seat, as a "free upgrade." Um, thank you?
Good luck. I don't have enough experience to offer anything else!

Thanks ladies! I just checked again with United and they assigned my daughter a seat but nothing for me. Rep said they will put me in economy plus most likely but we won't sit together. I just want to be on the flight! . I plan on giving her the better seat if it happens because this trip is a gift to her.

As long as you're checked in for the flight, and show up in plenty of time, they won't give your seat up or bump you from the flight (unless they need volunteers and you volunteer). They'll put you in economy plus since those are the only seats available! The extra 5-7 inches makes it REALLY nice!

Wow, I wish I found his board yesterday. I just paid the upgrade fee yesterday for a flight this afternoon where they place me, dh and 2 boys in 4 different rows. So annoying. This is also my first experience with have no free checked baggage - $23/bag. Had I known all these extras - it would have been cheaper with several other airlines

DH had to fly last minute on United a couple of weeks ago. Same scenario...he could buy a ticket on the flight but couldn't pick a seat assignment. He could not risk being bumped so he called United before buying the ticket. The customer service person was able to view the flight for him and tell him there were plenty of seats available so no worries about not getting one. He would just have to wait for his assignment until he got to the airport.
Why United thinks it is a good idea to handle seat assignments this way is for another thread....;-|Imagine if you are a family flying with young kids...

evelynr, lesson learned! We always look at the baggage fees. It makes a big difference as you have seen! We tend to stick to airlines that include 1 or 2 bags per person- Southwest and Jet Blue. Here's a list of Airline fees I don't give my business to those the require fees for a carry-on bag!

You typically can assign your seat ahead of time - I fly United all the time and have never had a problem. I'm assuming since you said it was last minute it fell into whatever window they have for that.

DH bought a ticket on a Tues or Wed for a flight the following Monday. He got seats just fine at check-in but he was also traveling alone. Good to know you have had good experiences with them.
