I would like to buy my DD and myself a new bike to ride on the bike trails (paved) near here. Any recommendations? TIA.

You are going to hear this a lot: Electra Townie cruiser. Mine is 7 speed. I have one, DD has one and they are just awesome.

I just got a new bike this week. I wanted something that I could ride on the road, paved trails, or even some unpaved ones (nothing crazy, but not smooth pavement). I wound up getting a Trek Neko SLX. I've only ridden it around the block at the bike store so far, but it seemed great. We'll be going for our first "real" ride (20-ish miles) tomorrow. Can't wait! I would suggest finding a bike store near you where you can talk to people who really KNOW bikes. They can help you decide on what kind, brand, size, etc. will be best for your needs and budget.

Mine is a 5 speed, love it! they have foot forward technology, which means the petals have been moved forward a few inches and make riding so much nicer. Whenever we go for bike rides, I've noticed I go faster than everyone else without trying. And I love the bigger seat for my butt, and how far the steering wheel comes to me instead of me reaching for the steering wheel, if that makes sense. I have a wicker basket in the front, our bichon-shih tzu loves to sit in it when we go. Although we attract far too many oohs and ahhs because she looks adorable in it, lol. The last stretch I let her out and she loves running beside us the rest of the way home

I absolutely LOVE my Townie. Mine is only a 3 Speed but I have no complaints for easy riding. They are a bit pricey but I bought mine from a local bike shop that rents bikes to ride on the river walk. Every year they sell their rentals for a really good price. Because I am technically the first owner, the warranty is mine and the bike shop does a yearly maintenance for free for the next few years (maybe 3, I can't remember now). They did a full maintenance on it before I took possession of it and I couldn't be happier with it, especially given the major discount I got!
DH found a Townie in a thrift store - the guy had no idea what he had and DH walked out with it for like $60. DH loves restoring old things, so he repainted it and did a bunch of maintenance type stuff on it himself. He said it was one of the most expensive Townies available. He was stoked! Have fun shopping, OP, you can't go wrong with one of these!
