Its running rampant through my kids' schools and through my extended family. Younger son just tested positive this morning.
I know to keep things clean and disinfected and in all honesty, we have already been exposed, but what are your old wive's tales prevention and remedy tricks that you swear by (for example, when I get sick I always put cotton balls in my ears).

I don't have any tricks, but was wondering what do the cotton balls in your ears do? Sorry you have to deal with this.

Your whole family has 1000% sympathy. I hate the effing flu. I get a flu shot and I swear if I get the flu I am a monster. I would bring you all some chicken soup if I could. (You are going to need it.)

The minute I start to feel sick I take Elderberry Syrup (by Nature's Way), and I eat a lot of raw garlic. Usually knocks down any virus that was thinking of really getting me down, and if not, I believe it significantly speeds healing. I'm sorry you're dealing with such a nasty bug. Hope it's over with quickly and those still healthy don't succumb.

Younger son just tested positive this morning. Can you get the doc to call in Tamiflu for him? And stand-by prescriptions for the rest of your family? This does help shorten the duration and severity of the flu. I'm very sorry your son and family are ill.

My ds had the flu last week. He had the flu shot. They didn't give him Tamiflu. The doctor didn't believe it would knock more than a day off of his healing time. He was diagnosed last Monday and he does feel better but still has an awful cough. Fortunately no one else got it.
I hope it moves through swiftly!

I'm sorry. That just sucks.
One thing I think people don't realize is that in order for disinfectant to work properly the surface must stay wet for around 2 minutes. Usually wipes don't do this. I recommend using bleach (I use clorox anywhere spray), spray on the surfaces you need cleaned and allow it to sit for a couple of minutes, then wipe it up with paper towels and toss. For remotes, keyboards, furniture, and doorknobs, light switches, etc I use lysol spray in a healthy amount so the surface remains damp long enough to work.
Good luck!
I don't have any wives tales, just soups, fluids in all forms, steamy showers and lots of rest. A flu will last about 7 days unless you get something like Tamiflu right away.

Man, that stinks! I hope it is a relatively mild case for your guy. Your best bet at this point is washing your hands a LOT. For the duration of the birthday song and all that. Try not to touch your face. (Easier said than done).

Up your vitamin C intake, get plenty of rest, and don't touch your face. Hopefully this will keep your body's natural immune system up.
Stock up on Kleenex and soup in case you get sick.
Fingers crossed that you all stay healthy and that your DS feels better soon!

Yuck, that's awful. Sorry to hear your son is sick and hope the rest of you don't get it.
I'm curious about the cotton balls in your ears as well. I've never heard of anyone else who does that.

Every time we feel our glands swelling or the start of an illness, we start elderberry syrup. It either keeps the illness away or greatly limits the illness. The brand that we use is Sambu by Dr Dunner. Dh and ds have been taking it this week. People at dh's work and ds's friends are sick. Sending positive healing vibes your way.

Wait for it..... Getting my flu shot . This year's A strain was not well covered by the vaccine. It went through my DD's school like wildfire right before the break too.

I know the peas use Neti Pot but has anyone tried Alkalol? It helped me tremendously. I always opt out of the flu shot so I didn't complain. Hope your family is on the mend soon.

But hand washing and not touching your face (sooo hard!) is key.

Sorry about your son being sick! I use essential oils to fight the flu & hopefully not get it at all. Thieves, Oregano and Lemon are my go to oils.

They always stress hand washing and not touching your face when that happens. They remind people about hand washing all year because someone is always sick, it's a nursing home. But when flu season starts they add in reminders to try to not touch your face.

Wait for it..... Getting my flu shot . Doesn't protect against all forms Homemade soup is always good! There is usually some cross reactivity between strains so even if a particular strain isn't covered in the vaccine when you get sick you will have a milder case because your antibodies against one strain will react some with the new strain's antigen. What strain is currently circulating? Is it closely related to any strain included in the vaccine?

I have a number of medical types in my family and this is what I learned also. I generally tend to clean then spray with bleach and let air dry. I have to be careful to keep the cats out of the room but I have a pretty decent track record of keeping illnesses from spreading using this method.

There is a significant amount of research on this, Dr. Kelly Reynolds does a lot of research at the University of Arizona in this area, and when I worked on an ebola research project we talked about this in depth. It's pretty important and considerably overlooked.

It's going around our school ... I sent two to the nurse yesterday (when the meds their moms had given them wore off at lunch time) and both had a high fever and were sent home. I spent the rest of the class period cloroxing. I know about keeping it wet for 2 minutes to kill all the germs, but that's hard in a classroom environment. I gave everyone a clorox wipe and had them scrub down their chairs, and I did my desk area myself, and then we all went to the restroom and washed our hands. We've been threatened against overspraying our laptop keyboards with Lysol ... apparently a couple of teachers fried their laptop with excessive spraying.

Apparently a cut onion placed in the room of the sick person will absorb the bad bacteria/virus floating around the room. Change daily.

My sympathies! DH is flying home this weekend and I hate to say I am dreading it because I always feel I need to quarantine him for a few days before he is allowed to come home for all the crap he always brings home after traveling especially on a plane!
I am doing errands today so I am stocking up on everything we need for the family just in case so I don't need to run out for medicine, tissues, etc!
I've see this elderberry syrup, maybe pick up that as well!
