We have whole house air conditioning. It has not worked for quite a few years. It doesn't really bother me because we don't have many super hot days here and I like my windows open. I do think we need to get it replaced with a new efficient model eventually for when we decide to sell in a few years. DH said that for my birthday (tomorrow) we could replace the unit. DD and I were all and and . How is fixing something that is broken and needs replacing anyway a gift? I'm not one who gets upset over presents or birthdays. I took DD and bought us both new bikes and I'm happy as a clam. But I do think for his birthday I may buy him some furnace filters and call it a day.

I second buying him furnace filters for his birthday. Of course that is because I bought my dh a set of dishes for Father's Day one year as a statement of him always buying me electronics as gifts I did later get him something else, but it was great watching the confusion on his face as he opened 'his' gift for my kitchen! Now we both just buy each other any type of gifts. From home improvement to appliances to family items.

Nope - that would suck! For his birthday, you should buy him a toilet plunger. I'm glad you went out and bought new bikes though - have fun and Happy Birthday!!

No. Maybe he is just a bad gifter and needs a little help from maybe your DD for ideas.

Definitely not a birthday gift! I second an equally as bad and impersonal gift for him on his birthday.

I don't know... We've done some things like that where we've considered things we've needed to buy/replace/get "gifts" for birthdays/Christmas, etc. If we don't have the money to do it any other way, it happens. But at the same time it doesn't sound like you NEED to replace the unit, so it's kind of a yucky thing to do. Good luck...

Nope, not a gift- unless you requested it. (which you didn't) Gifts should be something fun.

No. It benefits the whole family. Maybe next time you need a new washing machine you can give it to him for Christmas!

You go girl - furnace filters all the way! MEN!! I told my DH, a gift does not consist of anything with a cord/plug, unless it's attached to an ATM, with an unlimited supply of $100 bills. Happy Birthday - hope you enjoy your day, without a new air conditioner.

An air conditioning unit, for a house that you might be selling in a few years? for your birthday? No. Just. No. I'd gift wrap him some ladders for his birthday, and see if he can guess what is in the parcel.

What a guy. I mean really, what a guy. Only a guy would think replacing the a/c could be considered a gift. Would a woman ever say "Hey hon, how about I get you a new roof for the house for Christmas? I do like the furnance filter idea. Enjoy your bike.

Yeah, that sucks. I could see if you were sweltering and suffering and he got it done for you as a surprise, but even then, I wouldn't call it a birthday present. It's a gift to himself too, since he's going to be sitting in the air conditioned rooms with you. We have gotten some really hot days in Southern California lately. This week it will be in the 90s all week. That's too hot for me. I turn on the whole house air conditioner, but if I'm going to be working in my room for any reason, I still have to run the portable window unit because my room is the hottest room in the house. I guess for me, since I'm pretty practical, giving me the portable unit would have qualified as a birthday gift for me since I am the only one using it. And if it is hot in my craft room once I get back to working in there, I'll roll it into that room. But having the house unit fixed? Boo on him.

Can I be your husband's new wife? A/C units are expensive and I need a new condenser. As a rule of thumb, they run approx. $1000 per ton. So, I'd be HAPPY with that. However, you don't want it, so no, it's not a gift to you, it's a gift HE wants. Tell him it's HIS birthday gift and you want (insert whatever makes you happy here).

We just priced out having two units replaced and the bids came back between $11-15K. So yeah, that would be a hell of a nice gift.

Happy birthday!
I would not consider it a birthday present. That doesn't mean we wouldn't joke about it, but early on in our marriage, I made the rule early on that birthday gifts were thoughtful presents meant for the birthday person. If there are major household expenses and there isn't any money for a gift, a $20 gift or a free, thoughtful gift is ok. But it needs to be done with the birthday person in mind.
Now anniversary gifts? Those are often household improvements that we both want and would benefit from. A piece of art, a new patio, a trip... All acceptable. But we agree on it together.

I swelter and suffer in the heat (can't stand it, get super crabby) and if I had a choice between A/C and just about anything else, I'd pick the A/C hands down. I'd eat dog food if I had to in order to pay my A/C bill, if that gives you any idea of what it means to me.
Since you don't seem to be in that position, then it's not much of a gift.

WE're all different. So whether or not we consider it a gift is irrelevant. Twice I've asked for light fixtures as a gift. DH doesn't consider that a great gift to give me, but it's what I wanted, so he got them for me. I also once asked for new tires for my car. It was $1200. To me that's a great gift.
Perhaps he thinks having a/c would be a nice thing to do for you. You don't see it that way. That's fine. But I wouldn't assume it comes from a bad place that deserves P/A retribution.

So NOT a thoughtful birthday gift from one's husband who presumably has lived with you long enough to know what comprises your idea of a gift. So, yeah, I really like the idea of furnace filters, P/A or not. ETA: Oh, and Happy Birthday!

Even the best men can have a bonehead moment. LOL. I'm glad you got your new bike. That sounds like a great present. This year for my birthday my dh thought about getting me new sandals, but didn't want to buy the wrong size or style. The thought does not always count. I've returned the favor to him on his birthday. Today he got jack squat from me. He laughed. Money's tight with the wedding anyway and he knows he deserves it.

While I wouldn't classify it as a birthday gift, if it was time to replace the AC and we had the money around my birthday, I would gladly forgo getting any gift in lieu of taking care of that. But I wouldn't let him call it my gift.
But we don't usually go in for extravagant birthday celebrations so, for me, it isn't a big deal if there isn't a gift. I know for other people it's a big deal and their loved ones should care enough to act accordingly.

I would say it's a birthday gift if you really wanted it but since you don't care about air conditioning then no it's not a gift. Now I love my air conditioning and couldn't live without it so I would definitely consider it a wonderful gift.
