I just received a news alert that the first case in Dallas county has been found and it was transmitted sexually. Details are supposed to be forthcoming. On our BBC evening news it said that sexual transmission hadn't been confirmed and that it could be via saliva for example. I wish I could remember who they were quoting but i think it was an American doctor. I'll see if I can find it on the BBC site. If you read the statement I posted above, our CDC has confirmed that one case was sexually transmitted.

@gar there hey're saying first patient contracted it in Venezuela through a mosquito and carried it back to Dallas. Second case is related to first, sexually transmitted. But Washington Post is saying first patient also contracted it through sexual contact. Like many news stories there's going to be conflicting reports in the beginning. CDC is stressing condoms, other safe sex practices. Edited: Dallas County HHS site has more details on both: www.dallascounty.org/hhs/

That's the same statement I posted hours ago that you seemed to think was spreading rumors but now it's legit? I'm so confused.

If I missed your posting I apologize- congratulations? I never said you spread rumors. How did you get that? I think of you as a fact-seeking RefuPea.

I dunno... just the way you responded to my post replying to BF's post made it seem like you thought the assertion that it's sexually transmitted was rumor and creating hysteria. I posted the link to the statement at the same time, which validated the "rumor" but you seemed to ignore that. It was just weird to me that the discussion carried on as though it being sexually transmitted wasn't confirmed yet, though it was.
It doesn't matter, really. The flow of this thread is just a little strange to me. But I've also had a nutty day, so maybe my interpretation is off.

It was only amusing to me! It certainly wasn't directed at anyone here. It was more of a general population comment about people worrying. I thought your post from the CDC spoke for itself and gave us facts, not speculation. I'm sorry that wasn't clear!

Almost everyone lost their collective shit when the WHO said not to eat red meat because of health implications, but give them a little virus that is spread by mosquitos and sexual transmission and that causes birth defects and everyone wants to downplay it.

Did you see where I posted immediately, hours ago that it wasn't directed at you? I regret my attempt at a joke, but I didn't realize this thread was supposed to be confined to CDC reports alone. The bulk of my comments were about Dallas being well equipped for the situation.

The bulk of my comments were about Dallas being well equipped for the situation. I did. And while I appreciate that, I also think that posting "let the hysteria begin" right after someone posts about a potentially serious health situation where they live obviously has some correlation when you add 2 and 2 together. Although I'm not terribly concerned personally because I'm (way) past the point of having any children, I do worry that if such a virus causes birth defects that it's also possible that it may have other unknown health implications. I live in a community with ponds that have tested positive every year for West Nile virus (also mosquito borne), the first US Ebola victims were in my backyard, and now this. I don't think I'm hysterical, but definitely concerned about new diseases that are impacting my own community.

I searched and see the new report about the virus being transmitted sexually has been discussed. I live in a community with ponds that have tested positive every year for West Nile virus (also mosquito borne), the first US Ebola victims were in my backyard, and now this. That is nothing to mess with. My cousin is immunocompromised and got the rare side effect of seizures after getting West Nile virus. He now has a pace maker type of device to help control them.

If you read the statement I posted above, our CDC has confirmed that one case was sexually transmitted. Yes, I read that. I was a little confused because the BBC were reporting (from an American source I believe) that the sexual transmission route hadn't been confirmed, although it was certainly suspected but transmission by saliva, blood hadn't been ruled out. I tried to find more on that but couldn't/haven't yet.

All aboard the panic train: "Brazilian lab detects Zika virus in saliva, urine" Brazilian lab detects Zika virus in saliva, urine By Michael Pearson, CNN Updated 11:43 AM ET, Fri February 5, 2016 | Video Source: CNN "It was known that the virus could be present in both urine and saliva. This is the first time we've demonstrated that the virus is active [in those fluids], with the potential to cause infection," Fiocruz researcher Myrna Bonaldo said. But it doesn't necessarily mean you can get sick from contact with an infected person's saliva or urine, said CNN Chief Medical Correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta. "People have already shown that it can spread to bodily fluids other than blood, so this isn't entirely surprising," he said. "Presence of virus in saliva doesn't mean that it's necessarily transmissible that way." Health officials had previously reported isolated instances of the virus being passed via blood transfusions and sexual contact, including a U.S. case reported this week. Other labs, including the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, must now confirm the Fiocruz finding, Gupta said. www.cnn.com/2016/02/05/health/zika-urine-saliva/index.html

Yup. Read that this morning as well. So it looks like there is live virus in body fluids. Not a huge surprise if it can cross the placenta and get into amniotic fluid.
Still, keep in mind that the only people who really need to be concerned about Zika are those who are are pregnant or who could get pregnant because they are trying to conceive or not taking efforts to prevent pregnancy. There is a theoretical risk to the otherwise immunocompromised but that is not well described. I suspect that risk is more for the medically fragile immunocompromised individual who would be harmed by any virus or bacterial illness, but that is only my guess based on current information.

Very true. But considering the CDC's recent recommendation that ALL women of child-bearing age should avoid alcohol unless they are taking contraceptives, it seems like the warnings that would come for this are even more extreme. Definitely a fast-developing issue, and I hope they can find a vaccine quickly and/or figure out just how much of a risk it is. The increase in the microcephaly numbers in some of the South American countries were absolutely stunning... and they were still a tiny portion of all babies born. The percentages and increase numbers are what make it truly shocking.
