DD is going to update her condo kitchen. Of course she wants to do it on a budget. The last condo she had we used HD and they were great, but I've heard good things about Ikea. We installed Ikea closets in her unit and they are great.
If you have used them, or know someone, were they happy with them?
Did they install themselves or have someone install?

My husband's parents just bought an older house and re-did the entire kitchen with Ikea cabinets. They look absolutely wonderful, and they're really happy with them. There was a problem with a couple of the cabinet boxes, they came damaged, I believe, but Ikea made it right quickly. My father-in-law installed them himself, he's pretty handy.

We are using them in a beach cottage and they are really nice. DH is a perfectionist and he was surprised at their quality. He is installing them himself.

We have them in the condo. They were installed by the builder. They seem to be really good quality and are really pretty. I especially like the small touches like the soft-closing doors and the lazy susans in the corner cabinets.

We have them, hubby installed them himself nearly 6 years ago - he is pretty handy. They've held up well and I'd certainly have them again.

We have them as well, it was a complete update so we had IKEA do the job but we've added things ourselves since. Wouldn't go anywhere else for kitchen cabinets etc.

Would you say that the cost of labor was equal to the cost of the cabinets? i.e. $3k for cabinets and 3k for labor.
While dd and I put together and secured three closets with sliding doors and inside lighting, I'm not sure if dh, myself, dd and her fiancé could handle and entire kitchen.

I think I'm one of the few people that is not an ikea fan. We bought dd's bedroom set there & it is the worst pieces of furniture I've ever bought. It required extra glue & screws to put it together so it wouldn't be shaky. That thing is never coming apart so I hope she doesn't want to take it with her when she moves out!

Another question - so if all the base cabinets are white or wood tone, you would have to "cap" all the ends with cover panels if they go with grey, black or off white?

Also, she has a huge island, so I'm assuming we would have to build the island?
Thanks for all of your responses!!

The cost of labour came in just under the cost of the units to be installed, if I remember correctly. Ours was a big job as we have a large completely fitted kitchen and every unit etc., had to be replaced so we decided to go with them fitting it rather than finding our own builder who may not be over familiar with IKEA products. We honestly still believe that we did the right thing because they knew exactly how each unit fitted together and with each other so it was a very quick and efficient procedure. It would have been difficult for us to cope with so many units. We have put together lots and lots of IKEA products ourselves but felt this was going to be too much for us with that particular job. We did get some independent quotes for fitting and they came in at around the same price - but they weren't really familiar with IKEA units so we decided to go with installation being done by IKEA. By the way, I'm talking about the cost of the service in the UK and it may well be different in the US especially if you know a tried and trusted builder or kitchen fitter. Services like that tend to be expensive here, partly due to some regulations they have to follow. I love my kitchen now!

The previous owners of our new house purchased it from a person who flipped it 8 years ago - they used IKEA and the cabinets are holding up and look fantastic. My only complaint is that I wanted to add one more small piece and they've since adjusted the line so I can't get something that matches exactly in terms of the look.

We did our entire kitchen reno with Ikea cabinets/countertops/dishwasher. Best thing we've ever done. Love them and the quality is superb and everything still looks amazing after 3 years (and 3 kids who aren't so careful) Would do it again in a heartbeat!

Go to House Tweaking blog (www.housetweaking.com). Not only does she have an ikea kitchen but she runs a series on other people's ikea kitchen installs & durability. In short, they would all recommend

We also added door panels on the exposed edges, but that was purely for decorative purposes. We used the white Bodbyn, so the doors match the cabinets.

Also, she has a huge island, so I'm assuming we would have to build the island? Our island is a piece of furniture, but you can create an island using their base cabinets. I would suggest she start getting familiar with the (free) planning software they have. It seemed kind of glitchy the last time I used it, but it was still good to see all of the options. I probably did 15 different versions before I settled on the one that I was happy with, and we still ended up modifying (and exchanging) things partway through. And she she should definitely check out the kitchen forum at GardenWeb/Houzz. There are posters there who can make amazing things happen... I wish I'd found it before I did mine! A couple of threads in particular there that are helpful:

You should check the AS IS section. I was browsing in there yesterday, and our IKEA still has a lot of the older cabinet stuff in there. Also might want to check Amazon & EBay as people buy these items to flip.

My parents just finished an IKEA kitchen remodel (all new counter tops and cabinets) and it turned out beautifully! They did gray cabinets and white quartz counter tops. The process was easy and my parents are thrilled.

You might want to check out Clique Studios.com. We got cabinets from them for our laundry room remodel and DH was super pleased with them (and he's very picky). They were 1/4 of the price of Home Depot cabinets for much better quality (full plywood bases, pull out shelves, soft close doors, etc.). Their service was amazing too. We will definitely order kitchen cabinets from them when the time comes.

The kitchen cabinets really have great reviews. Our realtor used them also and loves them - I would think that he would be super picky.
It's great to read all the positive responses to the post. Thanks!
