I was watching the evening news and they did this story about Wounded Warriors that made a very good case that only about 60% of every dollar donated is used to help our veterans. The remaining 40% is partly used for team building events at a 5 star resorts in Colorado. Other non-profit organizations for veterans are said to use between between 91-96% of all donations for helping the veterans. Erick Millette a former client of Wounded Warrior had this quote in the piece " You're using our injuries, our darkest hours, our hardships, to make money so you can have big parties." Every time I see a Wounded Warrior ad on TV I get pissed. Not because of what they are asking for but because we even need organizations like Wounded Warrior. I believe if we are going to send our men and women to fight wars then when they come back the government should give these folks everything they need to make them as whole as they can be period. After all it's the government that sent them off to fight these wars then it is the government responsibility to take care of them. But that is not the case so we need non-profits to step in to pick up the slack. So when you hear stories like this its just plain disgusting.

I did not see the piece and had no idea. This review by Charity Nevigator seems to confirm what you said, and there are other like organizations who have a much greater percent of the money they raised go to support our veterans. |

I'm glad that the spotlight is on this organization. I've know for awhile that they offer minimal support to our wounded vets. Many times they visit the wounded vet in the hospital, give them a hat and sweatshirt and give them a "don't call us, we'll call you." For those that donate to WWP, may I suggest switching your donation to Fisher House, or other smaller organizations such as Team RWB, TAPS, or 22 Too Many. There are many out there that support veterans and their families in much better ways. While I agree that the govt should absolutely support our veterans needs, these smaller organizations fill a niche that the government can't fill.

My DH is military and he has made these kinds of comments about WWP for a long time. It's not an organization we support.

I'm not sure how many of you remember Meatball from way back in the day on 2peas. Both her and her husband are vets and I've seen them post about, share or comment on stories about WWP. I saw this story on Facebook last night b/c I think somebody tagged her husband and I read the comments and not one Vet had one nice thing to say about WWP. Definitely better options out there for your money to support our amazing troops! As the comments said last night, they just get so many donations because they advertise so much so people are familiar with them. Sad.  |

What a shame. I haven't donated to them, but they spend a lot of money and have a number of respected celebrity endorsements that does make it seem like they are an amazing organization. Those commercials certainly make it look like they do good works. |

Unfortunately, our office worked with one of the local organizers here a few years ago. We came to the same findings, regarding their finances and how they run their organization. It was eye-opening. I agree, it is not an organization I would support, and would consider donating to ones similar to what Kymberlee mentioned.

I hope this new information about their use of donations does them in. It's disgusting to think about how the money they spend so frivolously would mean so much to the families they are supposed to be helping.

This is a subject that is close to my heart. I am active in the Team RWB group in the DMV and Fredericksburg area and it has really been a wonderful eye opening experience that the needs of our veterans goes far beyond that of quality medical care which, as we all know, many don't get. These smaller organizations focus on many of the hidden needs of veterans such as mental health and the needs of the family especially those that have lost a loved one in the service of their country. I know that most of the $$ donated to RWB goes back into assisting the needs of veterans. RWB is run by mainly volunteers that do amazing things. WWP is a very well known, high profile organization that has focused attention on the needs of our vets and for that, I am thankful but they aren't the best place to donate your $$$ since much of their money goes back into the running of the organization.

It certainly does seem like the charities who work so hard to create name recognition end up doing less than the public thinks they do. I always find it's best to donate to local charities. I don't remember who posted the original post about the puppies in MD (Warrier Canine Connection) but that is who I use for Amazon Smile.

We are a vet family and they get no support from us. They, like Komen, have forgotten why they were created in the first place and now it's just about making $$$.

I've also known for a long time about the WWP. I also read somewhere that the WWP kind of duped the Under Armour company to becoming their official apparel sponsor and putting the WWP logo on shirts and such. It is a crying shame that our own government is not providing these services to our wounded soldiers. I gave a donation to the Gary Sinise Foundation that helps our wounded. I feel pretty good about that one but will also consider Fisher House next time. m |

Yeah, not a good charity at all. I highly recommend checking out Charity Navigator before donating to any group, it's a wonderful resource. OP I completely agree with your post.

So glad I read this. I had a donation request that I was ready to send back. I just trashed it. Fisher House is awesome. We benefitted from them when my DS was in the hospital when he was born. We were med'avaced from overseas to San Diego and didn't have money for a hotel those first few nights so they put us in a Fisher House. We stayed almost a week. After that the Navy paid for us to stay in a hotel.

DH is a veteran and he mentioned the same thing a previous poster did - they like to visit a wounded solider to drop off a hat/shirt and that's their contribution. |

I'm so sad to hear this. A good friend of mine supervises a therapy unit for them and I have never ever heard of these wild parties and stuff. She is one of the most scrupulous people I know and gives only to charities she can really get behind. I think that means many of us have been fleeced.

I am always hesitant to donate to a cause because it I never know where the money goes unless you can give it directly to the family. It's so hard to know these days with organaztions and that's sad. We saw it happen here with the firefighters in Prescott it was a mess. It's just sad. They ALL deserve so much more.

I often see their ads on late-night TV and it's tempting to donate. But I'm naturally suspicious of any charity with enough money to advertise so heavily on TV ... maybe unfairly suspicious, but whatever. It just didn't surprise me when I started hearing bad things about these people. But I'm very sorry that's the way it is. |

I donated to them once. They were the only veteran organization that dh's company would match the contribution so we went with them. Never again. The amount of junk mail I get from them even 3 years later is unbelievable. I have asked at least 5 times to be removed from their mailing list. They are wasting donation money sending this stuff to me.
We now support Fisher House instead.
