For me, I have a hard time allowing myself to put embellishments on a photo. Logically, I know I can reprint my photo again if I want or need to. They're all digital. Replaceable. I can pretty much treat them like anything else I could rebuy. But..... It's so hard to stick that arrow sticker on it. Or to let the petals of the flowers that are bordering it go over the edge of it. It's like I have to "make myself." Weird, probably. I usually do make myself, and I love how it looks so incorporated and it flows so well. But sometimes I just don't have the strength, and I end up using three graduated sized mats under that photo instead, lifting it up a good 1/4 inch off the base paper, like some king photo in a room full of peasant embellishments. Tell me about your layout struggles. Make me feel like I'm not a total scrappy freak.

I have the same problem about putting things on photos. No I don't mind if I can place the adhesive for the embellishment off the photo and just allow the edge of said embellishment to overlap the photo, but as far as putting stickers, text etc directly on the photo, I can not do that. But I am also one who started off scrapping by not adhering my photos at all, I used photo corners of some form so that the photo could be removed.
I struggle with misting/splating a page after the embellishments/photos are on the page. I have developed my own system for this as I lay everything on the layout without adhering anything, once I get it laid out, I pick the items up then spray/spalt and then put it all back together. That is the only way I can participate in this trend.

I have trouble with journaling- always have and probably always will. Not with the who what where and when but the kind of journaling I love to read but just can not seem to write. It is like writing a letter and that blank sheet of paper keeps looking back at me! I try and sometimes it turns out and other times forget about it!

I guess writing on the layout after I'm finished. I mean I don't have a problem coming up with the journaling itself, it's just that I will love a layout & then after I put my handwriting all over it, I'm not that into it anymore.
It's not a big deal to me, my eyes always just go straight to my handwriting.

Can't get the courage up to add the journaling - afraid I'm going to ruin them. . .

This is an awesome subject for a thread...because it applies to everyone, including me! (Most threads in the scrapping section don't since I don't buy stuff for scrapping). Like Scrapincin, I have problems with journaling. I do journal, but do best with the "who what where when" type of writing. When it gets philosophical, I always sound so sappy. Either that, or like I'm pontificating, or lecturing, or trying too hard.
I also have problems printing my layouts. (I'm digital), so most of my layouts are only living on my computer, on my blog, and sometimes on FB. They're not in albums. But at least, I don't have to worry about finding a place to store all of my albums!

I struggle with coming up with fresh ideas, so my pages don't all look the same.
I also struggle with trying to get 3 photos on a page when 2 are landscape orientation and one is portrait (or the reverse).
Last night I did a layout I was pretty happy with, about boys and squirt guns. I spattered some blue mist and then I thought it looked messy. I'll have to see how it looks when I get home.

I struggle with embellishing...picking out pieces that work and where to place them so it looks intentional and not the hot mess that usually happens. I go through spurts where I sort of practice and it starts to come more easily but I lose it as soon as I take a break.

Embellishing for me too. I almost never use my own handwritting...hate it. I make most titles and Journaling by computer on vellum and attach with brads.

I have so much trouble with embellishments. I love them, and I love picking out the ones that would be perfect on the page. But for the life of me, they look either lined up like little soldiers or a hot mess. I just don't get how people make them look so good.
I'm not a sappy journaler either. I keep it short and simple. I'm kind of like my aunt who keeps her menus and notes for her annual party -- they go back about 45 years. Every single one ends with "And a good time was had by all." I'm not looking for deep, philosophical, or even much on feelings on my pages. Not my style and I'm happy with my way.

Always with the journaling. I'm trying to use my own handwriting, but I don't like the look of it.

A journaling tip that really helped me...I think about what I would say if I was showing someone the pictures and that's more or less what I write. Once I started doing that, journaling came more easily and it sounds natural since it's in my normal "voice".

A journaling tip that really helped me...I think about what I would say if I was showing someone the pictures and that's more or less what I write. Once I started doing that, journaling came more easily and it sounds natural since it's in my normal "voice". I find that really helps too! But I also think a lot of people stop too early and just write the basics of who what when, etc. It's the stuff beyond that that's really interesting to me. Like, when the layout is done and someone looks at the page and you start talking about "the funny thing about this was - " and a whole different story comes out! I did a Jill Sprott journaling class way back and she drafted all of her journaling on scrap paper to allow herself a chance to go beyond the surface stuff and get to the meat of the story. I struggle with... almost everything lately! I struggle with using things that are not literally true. I made a page about a hike but I couldn't just use generic topographical map paper, which was the inspiration for the page - I had to print my own using the actual map of the place I went to. I don't like to use ticket shaped embellishments if I have the actual ticket to something (and no, I don't like to have a cutesie ticket shaped something as well, especially if it doesn't resemble the actual ticket). I'm not very good at enthusing or gushing, and when I do it's about weird things like TV shows, and then I feel like I need to hide those pages because normal people don't gush about fictional people's fictional lives that could be canceled at a moment's notice.

My biggest struggle is leaving room for journaling. I don't often leave enough space for what I would say if I had more space. I used to place a lot more emphasis on journaling and in recent years I just got tired of writing essentially the same thing on many layouts.
I can put a sticker on a photo in the blink of an eye, but squeezing in that journaling - a regular problem.

I really struggle with stamping on my scrapbook pages! I have a great stamp collection for card making, I just can't figure out how to make it work for scrapbook pages.

Different things on different days, lol. My biggest struggle is coming up w/my own idea. Pretty much can't. I need a sketch or a page to scraplift. I'm also not good w/color. Can never decide what works and what doesn't. I struggle with embellishing...picking out pieces that work and where to place them so it looks intentional and not the hot mess that usually happens. I go through spurts where I sort of practice and it starts to come more easily but I lose it as soon as I take a break. And this. Clusters look so cute on other people's pages and hot mess is the perfect description when I try it. Hence my need to scraplift. A journaling tip that really helped me...I think about what I would say if I was showing someone the pictures and that's more or less what I write. Once I started doing that, journaling came more easily and it sounds natural since it's in my normal "voice". Journaling is one of the few things I don't struggle with and I tell exactly this to my scrappy buddies who do: just tell me the story. Now write that down. I tend to have this problem, too. When I know I am going to have a lot to say, I will often journal first, make it into a journaling block and then work the rest of the page around it. If it's reeeeallly long, I'll put it on the back. Yeah, I'm a little verbose. I really struggle with stamping on my scrapbook pages! I have a great stamp collection for card making, I just can't figure out how to make it work for scrapbook pages. And this!

I really struggle with stamping on my scrapbook pages! I have a great stamp collection for card making, I just can't figure out how to make it work for scrapbook pages. I love to use my stamps on my pages, but I always stamp on another piece of cardstock and mount it like an embellishment. Or fussy cut it and then use it as an embellishment. Saves me from messing up & having to redesign my layout to cover up the screw up.

For me it would be editing, uploading and/or printing the photos so I have something to scrap in the first place! I wish I could just use the pictures as-is, but I.just.can't. They always seem to need to be resized, brightened, cropped, ugh. I don't want to spend all that time and money on a layout and then use substandard photos on it when I know they could be improved with a few minutes of tweaking.
I bought a Selphy so I could print some of them at home (and I have used it for some layouts) but it drives me nuts to have some pics on a layout printed on the glossy Selphy paper and some on the luster finish paper (that I actually prefer) printed at Costco.

This is a great thread! I am good with knowing what story I'll tell, picking out a photo to go with it, finding a sketch or some design to inspire me, picking out papers, putting the background together and putting the picture on and the journaling. I even usually know how I want to do the title. It's after that where I hit a snag because I am such a lover of clean design that it's hard for me to add embellishments! I love embellishments and I want to do pages with tons of them and layers (I draw the line at splatters, I'll never understand the appeal of those) but I usually just put a trio of embellies and call it done. I'm working on that though!! I think every designer struggles with some aspect of making a page.

This is me but only in more recent years. I wonder if it has anything to do with all the photos I cut into wacky shapes when I started where I now can't see the rest of the photo because of the way it was cut. Even though my more recent photos are digital and could be easily reprinted I think I know in my heart that I'm too lazy to go back and do that if I needed to.

I will admit that I "bargain" with myself when it comes to messing with the photos. If I'm stamping on it, using a rub-on on it, cut it in a weird way, cover it a whole lot, etc.... I print out an untouched duplicate and adhere it to the back of the layout. That way I know it's there just in case.

There were a lot of things I've struggled with until I realized I don't need to do it a certain way! Journaling; writing the basics and a quick sentence were my style. Pages; clean and simple are what I like. Titles; I don't need them on every page. The photos speak for themselves the majority of the time.
I think my most annoying thing right now is mixing papers. The right size, stripe, floral.... If it's not in a collection, It takes a while to put the page together.

Her videos are awesome!!! I may or may not be guilty of staying up an hour past my bedtime last night to watch the first two episodes. Also, is it silly to admit that I felt slightly honored when you replied to my comment? I just started lurking on Scrap Gals over the weekend and began listening to the latest podcast a couple of days ago.

Embellishing! I am a linear, clean and simple scrapper and struggle to place embellishments.
As for journaling, I often will put it on the back, if I don't feel it fits in well with the layout on the front. I love to find old photos with notes about the picture on the back that my grandma wrote. I always include the details on the back too...person, date, time and place. I think of those recent photos of Billy the Kid that were discovered and want to make sure that in a couple hundred years when someone finds my books in an attic, they have all the details. :-)
