As I'm getting my new room in order, I have realized I have an excessive amount of partially complete projects and projects where I have gathered and purchased all the materials but not yet started. Am I the only one like this? I'm actually brainstorming storage options for these...perhaps I should just set a rule, finish one before I start/prep another?!?

Are you upstairs in my craft room?
Good at buying, not so good at starting, worse at completing.
ETA: when I did my clean out, I got rid of many, many projects I knew I would never finish or even start. It was freeing.

I actually don't have that many unfinished things because at heart I'm a 'completist' I guess. Leaving things unfinished does bug me, so I tend to want to get them done and not have too many projects on the go at once.

I have one Iris box labeled "in progress". For on-going albums like school or scouts I also have labeled boxes to keep stuff related to those albums. It helps to keep the mess down. If you want to limit yourself on unfinished projects just set aside an area for them and don't let yourself overflow out of that area.

I have a basket of planned pages that have been sitting there for over 3 years & all the embellishments are even in those folders. It totally bugs me that I probably don't even like what I picked out at this point.
Other than that, I do have a few mini albums in progress that I'm never going to finish!

I have too many incomplete projects as well. I have many of ongoing projects as well. I do keep them stored together, and it is my 2016 goal to get the unfinished ones completed and the ongoing ones completed to the point where I am now in the project so they will be more current. I am planning on getting a lot organized at my retreat this weekend.

I have a lot of layouts and projects that have not been started yet (but I have paper, embellishments, etc), or are incomplete (I'm looking at you DD!).
So, nope, you're not alone.
I don't mind having an assortment of projects ongoing. I feel stifled if I only have one thing going at a time. I may not be in a scrap a school event mood, but would rather scrap Halloween instead.
I also don't want to force myself to complete a project for one subject if I have run out of mojo for it. It would be a forced march and my art never comes out nicely when I force it.

If you think it's very unlikely you will ever finish them, let them go/trash, etc. Otherwise, I would store them in Iris containers-multiple projects in a box even, whatever will fit.

Are you upstairs in my craft room? Either that or she's standing in front of my quilting stash! As far as scrapbooking is concerned, I consider it an ongoing project. But I'm scrapping chronologically and do don't theme albums of any kind. So for me, while I'm several years behind in all three of my album sets (personal, cats and martial arts), I just keep chugging along and chip away when I can. Whether or not I ever get "caught up" is of no concern at this point.

I have several half finished mini albums. I've found that if I don't have pictures printed and ready to go I won't finish the project. I started a paper bag mini album somewhere around 2011 with a cute paper pad from HL called Farm Fresh. What I've done is cute but doesn't really have a purpose so I never finished it. Now I can't even imagine why I bought farm themed paper. Even before that I started a mini album in the shape of a house. So cute! But no pictures so not finished. On the bright side, I've learned not to start projects without pictures. I used to buy supplies for crocheting, but was never happy with the beginning of the project. I'd get a few inches into a shawl, scarf, or baby blanket and already hate it. I had several 6" long shawls, scarves, and blankets and nothing complete! I finally gave away all my yarn and hooks. I never missed them and the person I gave it all to started using it right away. I could never toss my half finished scrap projects or the scrap supplies I still love, though.

I can be, but I've realized recently that the overwhelming feeling mostly comes when I'm not too excited about finishing specific projects. So I've learned, and am still working on letting those go. Sure, it's money "down the drain" but if I never get to them it's still money down the drain, and taking up valuable real estate, and most importantly messing up my mojo. I don't need the guilt so it works much better just letting it go.
For scrapbooking, it is a constant state and I am okay with that. I often purchase papers and embellishments for a specific layout so I store them in the clear plastic snap envelopes from Michael's and keep them in a bin together. So instead of searching through everything I own because I just know I've purchased something for this set of photos, I know right where to look and I can pull it out when I am in the mood to work on it. I also often have to stop a layout because I am missing (paper, embellishment, title, different sized photos, journaling) so I have notebooks where I store these in progress layouts in page protectors. And sometimes I'm just no longer feeling it so I can put them in there and bring it back out when I'm ready. I have some albums for others I am slowly working on and these are stored in my Iris scrapbook cases in my closet.
For non-Scrapbooking projects I store things mostly in clear plastic boxes. I use a lot of the Iris Scrapbooking cases, and some from the container store. I try and use the same boxes all over my house so that everything stacks nicely and when it is not needed to store crafts, it can be used elsewhere. These boxes have stayed the same for so long, I don't have to worry about not finding them next year.
Most of my scrapbooking projects & supplies are stored on some shelves in my room. The albums and a few other items are stored with on their own shelf in my closet. I have a small walk in closet with Elfa shelving from floor to ceiling on one 5' wall. I have a scrapbook shelf, knitting & crochet shelf, jewelry shelf, wrapping & party shelf, and a couple others. Since the boxes all stack neatly and are clear it makes storage and finding things a breeze.

You aren't alone Mine are pretty well organized....I have a couple stacks of 13x13 containers and I have labeled what they are (mostly trip books I haven't started). For unorganized, I usually have a small stack of either leftovers that I really want for a future project or layouts that may need embellishments or journaling. I actually grab stuff now and then from it and get things finished. Seems like I've usually managed to just stick to that one little stack of unorganized stuff. As for any projects besides scrapbooking or making cards, I got rid of a lot of it or just put it in a container and labeled it and stuck it in a closet (jewelry making, for example). I have no interest or time starting anything new or I'd be totally overwhelmed. I'd really like to try quilting, but I'm afraid of the stuff and space it would need.... And yes, if you need to pare down what is in progress, make a rule to finish one before you start anything else. Just like after a crop I put every single thing back in its spot....I don't like having more than 1 project in process at a time (but it's been known to happen).

all three of my album sets (personal, cats and martial arts) This is incredible and I want to see these albums! I literally cannot think of a more interesting combo! I'm not behind (more than a week or so...) on PL because I am OBSESSED with it, but I do have a blanket I've been knitting as a wedding present.... for my friends who got married in June. June, 2015! I have a year, right? RIGHT?!

I have two Iris boxes with projects that are in various stages of completion. I thought that after I retired I would have oodles of time to scrap. I need to complete one project every two months or so. I have the time; I just don't make it a priority.

Boy it does kinda make me look a little bit crazy, doesn't it? My cat albums are pictures of my cats. I'm on volume 3, although there's been less content since they've gotten older. How many pictures of 'cat in a bag' or 'cat in a box' does one really need to take? My martial arts albums are all the martial arts events, tests, seminars, etc. i'm on volume 4 (I've been training for 10 years, but I'm a few years behind on these photos). As with the cat albums, these are getting more sparse as time goes on The higher in rank I get, the less often I test and the less pictures there are to put in the albums. Just how many pictures of other people do I need? My personal albums are everything else. The occasional concert, museum, weekend getaway, vacation, etc.

Nope, you're not alone! I have a TON of projects I have bought stuff for and haven't even started, some of it goes back for a DECADE. I still want to do the projects, but need to get my photos straightened out. I'm getting closer though. I do pretty well once I start something, especially if the stuff for the project is all collected together. That's what I spent a lot of time doing instead of actually scrapping last year.
I got a little burned out on organizing last fall and needed to take a break from it so I did and have been spending what free time I have working on assignments for a self paced online class I've been taking (currently on week 23 of a 10 week course, LOL!). Once I'm done with that, I'll be ready to jump back in both with organizing and scrapping. It's hard for me to be creative in the middle of chaos.

I have an expanding folder of guilt also known as a vacation mini album from 2007 (which I really will finish one day) and a few other Iris cases of in progress but not really projects. I've actually started purging the projects that I know are never going to get done or finished and am hoping to work on the other older projects over the course of this year.

Ha, I love all these comments. Scrapbookers are comedians!
I think having in-progress and incomplete projects is totally normal for scrapbookers. I had a 12x12 tray (I think from Target) where I would put some unfinished things. At some point it got out of control and I went through it. Some I finished up, others I took apart/cut up for other use, and some I just threw away. It was mostly kits from attending classes or crops where it wasn't really my style.
While I always have incomplete projects, I have worked over the past few years to try to limit the amount of in-progress projects. I usually do the "don't start this until I finish this tactic" but sometimes that also stunts creativity so I just do what I want!
I am in the 'it's just part of the process, so accept and don't worry too much about it' camp.

Too many unfinished things to count, but I attribute that to my ADD and personality type. I've got lots of empty albums that I plan on using for certain things (a 9x12 for vacations, lots of 4x4 albums I got on sale) but who knows if that'll ever happen. What's most important to me is my project life, and I'm a couple months behind (just started November) but I always make lists of events that happened each month so it's easy to catch up when I actually sit down and force myself to do it. We won't talk about how I only started PL in June and feel the nagging need to go back and do Jan-May 2015 so that I have a complete year.

I can't explain why but I had the *best* time working backwards!

I am in the 'it's just part of the process, so accept and don't worry too much about it' camp. I am the same! Just last week I worked on some incomplete projects that I had put in an Iris container. I no longer make layout kits ahead of time. I found that when I got to them I didn't remember what I was thinking or no longer liked what I put together. I don't mind having some unfinished projects, just not to many. Having them sorted and labeled helps with my guilt. I also try to accept the fact that my creative process isn't always as powerful from start to finish.
