I have a nearly 7 year old chiweenie and starting this morning, she's coughing and gagging. It's been going on all day. In all other ways, she's her normal self. Her appetite is great, she was running all around when I brought groceries home, etc. I have a vet appointment tomorrow for her, but am just worried. She's also Lyme positive, so when anything happens, I worry that it will impact her, too. Not to mention, her absolute total fear of going to the vet. I've looked online and there's lots of scary things. I'm not sure about kennel cough as she hasn't really been around any other dogs. _____ She woke us up coughing at 5AM and now hasn't coughed since and got up and eagerly ate treats (TD bites that she gets for tartar control) and barked at passerbys out the window. We were debating back and forth over whether to keep her appointment or not when the vet called to cancel. Our doctor is sick today, so we're going to monitor how she's doing and then perhaps reschedule for tomorrow, if needed. Thank you for all of your stories--they helped ease my nervous doggie mama mind.

I was going to say kennel cough but you kind of rules that out. Could it be reverse sneezing? I think you can find videos on YouTube to see if it's the same sound.

That's interesting--she does that. But that's not what this is. This is sort of coughing, but more gagging. Can't wait for the vet appointment tomorrow. When I spoke to them, they said that because she was eating, etc. that they thought she'd be fine to wait til tomorrow for the visit, but if she got to where she couldn't breathe, she'd need to go to the emergency vet.

If you walk her outside and she buries her nose to smell whoever just peed there, she can pick up kennel cough if the previous sniffer had kennel cough. My last dog caught a very virulent strain of kennel cough that way a few years ago - it involved coughing up a lot of mucus.
If she seems very uncomfortable tonight, you can give her 1/4 to 1/2 tablet of Benadryl. It will help dry her up a bit and help her sleep.

elaine My SO said that she was super interested in a spot for the last couple of days out on a walk and really exploring and smelling around, so perhaps that could be it. She LOVES to walk and takes a couple of long ones a day--and she's always got her nose to the ground. So far, she's not coughing up anything, but it just started this morning--just a couple of times, then this afternoon, it was like she couldn't stop. Now it's settled down a bit and is just occasionally, but the Benadryl is a great idea.

Bella had even been vaccinated for kennel cough, but that year there was a super-bug version going around and she picked it up. Dogs are, well, dogs, and like to smell the grossest of things, including other dogs' vomit, etc., so it is hard to know exactly how dogs pick stuff up. They are a walking version of "Bodily Fluids R Us!"

When we came back from vacation last summer both of our dogs had something like that. They had stayed at a kennel but had been vaccinated for kennel cough. Took them to the vet and she said that there was a respiratory virus going around and that dogs can easily catch something like that like humans can.

Yes--hoping that she'll sleep it off or something. I know she's feeling fine because she's SUCH a drama queen over any little thing that's bothering her. She was playing with her toys earlier and greeted us like conquering heroes when we came back from the store. She's Lyme positive because she picked it up before we got her. She was found in the woods by a friend of ours when she was about five weeks old and we found it out when she had her first visit. So far, it hasn't been an issue but I know it can add complications with things that might happen with her.

Our mini-weenie gets allergies real bad and coughs and will have drainage (like people) in the back of her throat. I wonder if thats it? We give Annie benadryl and it will clear up.

My nearly 13 yr old Dachshund reverse sneezes. I had never heard of this before having her but my vet said it was quite common in Doxies. About 18 months ago she started doing it every day, multiple times a day. The vet said it's an allergy or sensitivity to something in her environment. It does sound like she's coughing and gagging. Sometimes it goes on so long that you think she's not going to stop. We treat with antihistamines. In addition she sneezes in a regular fashion too and blows boogers everywhere. She cleans them right up though ?? Have a vet check your dog over. Hopefully it's as innocuous a thing as it is for our dog.

Thanks, everyone! I feel better knowing that other dogs have had issues too. She's never had anything like this before and only needed to go to the vet for her yearly exams so far, so this is new and scary to me!

There is a canine flu going around. I normally get my dog kennel cough and flu shots every August but she has been sick and my vet and specialist don't think the shots are a good idea for her. I can't take Chloe to pet stores (PetSmart is like Disneyworld to her), for walks around the town green, or anywhere near other dogs. There is no guarantee the flu shot works on the strain this year so it might not have helped anyway.

My dog had a virus a couple of weeks ago. Coughing, snorting, goopy eyes. No change in appetite or activity. I took her to the vet and he wasn't really concerned. It resolved in about 5 days.

Hi! I just wanted to let you know that my vet sent out a newsletter to all patients saying that there is a particularly virulent strain of dog influenza going around - H3N2.
How is you pup doing?

elaine Thanks for checking in! Things have been...weird. After I wrote that small update, she threw up twice and was kind of out of it the rest of the day. Yesterday, our vet was still sick but we felt that worked out well, because Keigan was back to her normal self. She played with her toys, went for a walk, had a great appetite. But then today--three more vomits--this icky green snotty stuff. After the third, we decided to take her to the ER, even though she has an appointment with her vet tomorrow. We had to wait a LONG time, and suddenly, after about an hour there, she started perking up, wagging her tail at the workers and wanted to get off my lap. We took her outside and she started running and playing. We finally decided to just bring her home and keep the appointment we have for tomorrow. We know SOMETHING is still up but it's confusing because she's now herself again.

Our 12 year old beagle does the raspy cough with gagging at the end (rarely throws up though).
We have been to the vet a few times.
One thing that was brought up that is associated with those symptoms is congestive heart failure. They can do a chest x-ray and other tests to help determine.
However, our vet thought it was probably NOT that (just from listening to his heart/lungs and his throat). Turns out ours has some respiratory issue that older dogs can get and his airway gets inflamed (similar to allergy type symptoms). He is on a low dose steroid - half of one every other day, which seems to keep this in check. The vet said if it were congestive heart failure, the steroid would not help this.
So, for now we treat it and just keep an eye that no further symptoms occur.
Wishing you and you puppy luck. If it is the same sound our dog makes, it sounds as if it hurts a bit and it sure had me worried!

chlerbie, I hope that the vet appointment goes well today! That she is still eating and playing most of the time is a good thing. My dogs always make apparent liar out of me - my last dog and my current love the vet and meeting new people, so, even when they appear really sick at home they turn into happy wriggling messes at the vet's office and give the people there the Wheaten Greetin'.
