What do you eat?
Friends went to the Dominican Republic, came back and complained about the steaks they got? Seriously you are on an island, not much room for beef cattle. Fish is what I imagine the islands do right. ( which is why I had no desire to go island hopping.)

In terms of meat - fish, chicken, and pork. Never beef. Sometimes goat.
Depending on the country - the chicken and pork tend to be free-range and VERY good.

You are on an island . . . eta: I forgot to actually answer your question! I eat fresh fish, chicken (the jerk chicken we had in Jamaica was phenominal) and a lot of fresh fruits. I think whatever is common in that area will obviously be the best choice, but I enjoy trying new things, but certainly wouldn't complain about a beef option if I were on an island.

Pretty much everything but beef. Mostly seafood. And lots of fruit.

When we were in Curacao, people were complaining about the pork. The thing is that it actually tasted like pork is supposed to taste rather than the flavourless crap you get in most grocery stores.

I ask what the specialty is and try that!
ETA: I think a lot of people are not very open-minded when they travel. They expect their experience to be like their regular life with better scenery.

I won't eat beef that's for sure! It is an island. I live in the middle of the USA. Where am I going to get a better steak? LOL!
When traveling to places like that I try to eat local food. I'll do a little seafood, pork or vegetarian dishes.

I just came home from Cuba. There is always plenty of chicken, fresh fish, pork and fruit, rice, beans and other veggies.
The food was great. The breakfasts had cheese, omelettes made to order, lots of fruit.
Lunches had fresh fish, chicken, pork and lots of veggies & fruit, bread & cheese.
Dinner had fresh fish, chicken pork and again lots of veggies, fruit, bread, cheese. They would cook your meat/fish to order. There was a lot of fresh calamari and shrimps. The lobster is a warm water lobster and not a Maine Lobster. They cut the shell in half and bake it. Not very tasty, however, IT IS AN ISLAND.
I bring along Heinz Ketchup, Real Maple Syrup (yummy for banana flambé) and Kraft Peanut Butter.
The beef isn't tasty as the beef isn't grain fed or grass fed like on the continent.

This is a bit off topic, but we have a lobster season down here (Florida) for those warm water lobsters (aka spiny lobster) and the results are hard won prizes as the majority are caught by hand while snorkeling. You can find them throughout the Caribbean islands and south Florida. And they do have a different flavor than cold water, Maine lobster, but they are a real treat when they are in season. We think they are they are a very tasty treat.

Fish and seafood, chicken and pork. Beef is probably shipped in from the US.
The thing that surprised me and lots of tourists about Cayman is the lack of good fresh fruit.. not all Caribbean Islands are conducive to growing fresh fruit.
Cayman is an arid desert climate... so hard to grow much at all.
I always suggest asking locals.

Oh my, I feel sorry for people like that. Whether it's thoughtless or they have issues, they're missing out on life. I have a friend who travels throughout Asia often for work. His McDonalds bill is staggering!
But at least he knows he's got a problem.

Fish is what I imagine the islands do right. ( which is why I had no desire to go island hopping.) Don't avoid islands because you think you're limited to fish. I'm not a huge fish fan - I'll have a bit when it's a local specialty, but wouldn't want it for every meal while on vacation. I've never had any issue with good quality alternatives. Chicken pretty much universally available, and many places have good pork as well. I don't eat a ton of red meat at home, so don't seek it out on vacation unless it happens to be the specialty.

When I go to the islands...I usually wake up from my dream!
Actually, when we HAVE gone, I eat seafood. I love seafood. And on any vacation, we avoid chains and eat at the local joints. We ask around, hotel staff, cab drivers, etc.

A number of years ago I travelled with a colleague to Puerto Rico for a few days, for work. It was my first trip anywhere 'exotic' and I was all excited to try some of the local cuisine, but she didn't like any of 'that kind of food' so where did we eat?? We were in Puerto Rico, and we ate at Subway and KFC!! (I was a lot younger and less assertive then, so I didn't say anything-- but it's been at least 20 years since that trip, and I'm still bitter about it, lol. )

I am not a fish/seafood eater at all and I've never had a problem eating in any of the islands we've visited. We've found there are a wide variety of restaurants and have had some great meals at Italian, Mexican, Asian, etc. restaurants. We've also had some really great steak dinners while on vacation in the Caribbean.

You know how some people have a problem with peanuts, I have that problem with sealife. ( altho I can eat a bit of seaweed.) I am in fear of cross contamination. I feel that most island cooks would not understand or understanding

Seriously you are on an island, not much room for beef cattle. we were once of a remote island that just had a few tiny rentals. I ate fish the whole time. DH ordered a burger the first day we were there. it was the worst looking (and tasting according to him) burger that I had ever seen. lesson learned for DH.

Whenever we're traveling we eat at a local place, and order whatever the specialty of the house is. DH and I ate lunch on the beach in Aruba once from a food truck - great stuff, we had stingray and it was fabulous. Some of the best foods I've had have come from little 'hole in the wall' restaurants or food trucks. And before anyone asks, no, I've never gotten sick, never had any food bother me from anywhere we've eaten - and we've been to most of the Caribbean islands you could mention as well as several places in Mexico. I guess I've got an iron gut, but I grew up eating lunch a lot of days from the food carts in Nassau.

It was a coincidence, and seeing all of the boats made us wished we had planned better!

Fish. lots of fish. Pork. My Dh's cousin is married to into a Fiji boy. He's awesome. He makes a lot of fish. Which I love cause my Dh doesn't like fish so when we do family dinners he'll bring me stuff every so often or we'll do a side dish. He wants to take us there and shows us pictures or we'll facetime with his family.

Have you eaten dungeness crab? It is fishy. I mean the stuff you catch out on the water yourself is fishy. It is. The other 3 members of the family love it but I can't eat it. Lobster, though, is divine.
