Anyone ever have to have them?? My mom who finished chemo three weeks ago has had some issues with her port. Now it apparently caused three blood clots to form in her arm. She and my dad are at the oncologist's right now and according to my dad, she'll need 5 straight days of shots. Then it can take up to 6 weeks for the clots to dissolve.
I'd love to hear anyone's experience.

I was taught by her doctors office nurse but had already had experienced giving shots to myself so it wasn't a big deal. I gave my mom hers in her stomach. I also always gave them at the same time to her each evening. Made a chart and checked it off just to keep a record to make sure it was given.

Thanks!! She's going to have to have hers at the same time also. Our neighbor is a nurse so that helps. I think they put her on warfarin too which has probably pissed her off because of the no large amounts of green leafy veggies...

I had to have them after my surgery for ovarian cancer (but before chemo), but only when I was in the hospital. I just remember feeling bruised in every spot on my thigh where they administered them.
I didn't have a port...I just got set up with IVs for my treatments.

The port caused more issues than the chemo.

The shots are not really a big deal, but more annoying. Having an educated neighbor might come in handy if your mom needs some extra help. They should do plenty of training before she has to do it on her own. And like a previous poster said an annoying side effect is brusing and sometimes pain at the injection site.

Hey! I had to do them the last month of my pregnancy, twice a day. They are really not a big deal. The worst part was just psyching myself up to give them to myself. I didn't even bruise from them if I was good about rotating my injection spots. Sometimes the medicine burned a bit after it went under the skin, but nothing horrible. 5 days should be manageable. If it makes her feel better, I had to do them twice a day that last month, but had to do another one (Lovenox) every day for the previous 8 months. Fun times.

Yeah my mom loves spinach but its not something she is suppose to eat a lot because of her blood. I got so use to giving them to her because she was always having surgeries it because 2nd nature. I agree that bruising will happen. My moms stomach looked like she was beaten but its normal...well at least for her. Good luck to your mom. I was following your updates on your mom at the pod...unless your a totally different pea I'm thinking of ha! ..this one had a cute pup as a profile pic :-)

She can have the shot in her arm too so that's what our friend did today. She handled the chemo so well...no issues except with the port

(I was wrong about the heparin). Hoping this is just another blip in the road...
