We had a stainless steel that was original in our house (1979). We could never get it to look clean (2000-2010). So when we put in a new kitchen in 2010, we went with granite composite. I love this sink, even though we're only 5 years in so far. We really did not like the look of the stainless. It was not rusted or dented, but just had a cloudy look that we couldn't get to shine up. That's exactly what mine does. So maybe not water stains? Just really cloudy. have you tried scrubbing using cream of tartar? that always works to shine up my pots

I get occasional rust from leaving cookie sheets in the sink. My stainless cleans up beautifully using a magic eraser.

I couldn't wait to get rid of my stainless sink- HATED it! I replaced it with a dark brown composite granite sink that I LOVE!
knitnmomma I just clean mine with Dawn and rinse it well. Then wipe it down with a little olive oil- shines and takes away the white haze.

The ones we've had seen to scratch far too easily. And yes, I'd see rust in the scratches.
We now have porcelain.

I have had stainless steel rust, but it is so simple to clean/remove, all you need to do is rub some baking soda as a paste with water on the rust and it comes right up. (This also works in plastic bathtubs with rust rings from shaving cream!) I think they are super durable and especially for a rental unit. I can't say I've ever seen one dented.
