Very, very creative! I love it. This is something that would definitely be a great idea, except I had a cat that like to perch himself on the edges of the box (I guess he didn't like to step in the litter either!) and the pee would end up outside the box. He was my struggle. So something like this would not work, unless it was all plastic! But for nice clean cats, perfect. I had this same problem when I bought a litter box cabinet. It reeked of pee in no time. Scratched that and went back to our regular covered box. I am excited if this works for you, though. I love the idea.

That could be the final component to the perfect setup I am currently using. I have three Cats in my master bedroom with me. The decision to keep them in there was partly mine; partly theirs. They had the run of the house and garage until I rented out a bedroom to the guy who used to live across the street with his girlfriend. The cats are afraid of him, and I don't want to take the chance that he will leave the door open while bringing in stuff from his truck. Since the cats were hiding in my room anyway, I just keep the door closed now. I bought an extra large cat box with high sides and a snap on cover. I eventually discovered the best litter ever made - CLUMPING CRYSTALS in super small size. The regular crystals seemed to bother their feet, and absolutely hurt mine when any got outside the box. Then I found the best working litter mat ever. I have had cats for my entire life, and this litter/mat combo is so awesome. The litter is absolutely dust free. Any clay that claimed 99 percent dust free never worked like it in my house. This crystal truly is dust free. No more cleaning every surface for 8 feet around the box. And the final thing, since it is crystal and clumping, there is no pooling of urine in the bottom of the box and NO URINE SMELL. I still scoop every time one of them poops, and that gets flushed while the urine clumps are put into little plastic bags (Daiso, $1.50 for 70 bags) and the bags go into a small covered stainless trash can. Every time I open the can to put in another bag of clumps, I expect a strong urine smell. Not with this stuff. It clumps into rock hard balls that are odor free! ( well, I have never gotten close and sniffed, but in your average proximity during cleaning, no pee smell! The fine ground clumping litter is Exquisicat clumping soft paws and I get it at PetSmart. m.petsmart.com/h5/hub?id=supplies-training%2Flitter%2Fexquisicat-fragrance-free-clumping-micro-crystals-cat-litter-zid36-30687%2Fcat-36-catid-200093%3Fvar_id%3D36-30687The litter mat was from Amazon. Expensive, but worth it. IF you use a small grained litter. www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00G67FD6W/ref=mp_s_a_1_7?qid=1454643438&sr=8-7&pi=SL140_CR0,0,140,140_QL70&keywords=litter+mat I tried the mat works best with the super fine clumping crystals. Otherwise, the holes get clogged with big litter pieces. Now I am going to find something to turn into a litter box cabinet like this! Like I said, my box has high sides and a snap on lid that will not let pee out. My male cat doesn't squat. He just stands and pees. I haven't had him pee out of the opening, but just in case he does, I think I will either waterproof the wood or make some kind of washable liner pad for the whole bottom. Thank you for sharing your idea. This will fix my one remaining litter box issue. It's ugly. Maybe I can move it out of the master bath to the window wall in my bedroom. Then they can sit on it to look outside.

smartypants71 maybe it would be a good idea to line it with plastic and duct tape that can be sprayed down or even removed. Especially since cat urine is impossible to get out of wood, even the slightest mishap would ruin the cabinet.

This is wonderful! I'd be looking for something to coat the inside so urine won't soak into the wood. Maybe the stuff that goes on basement floors/walls to lock out moisture? Then the cabinet would be perfect.
