If Target says that a store has a limited stock on an item...what are the odds they actually have the item in the store? Silly I know but I don't shop Target that often and if the item isn't going to be there, I could save myself some time and a trip.

IDK. The one time such an ad appeared that had something I wanted badly, I got over there early and was able to purchase.
I think that disclaimer is a CYA in case something sells out.

This was online via the check stock in store option.

you can order it online and pick it up in store. that's what i do. i check online which store has a lot (or at least more than 1 since numbers can vary). i place my order and choose the in-store pick up option. one time i was buying a reed diffuser. it said my store had 7 of them. i was suspicious if it was true. i decided to go inside the store and sure enough, there were 7 sitting on the shelf. maybe i got lucky that one time but i tend to think their online counts are accurate.

You could call the store and someone could check. I think they could even hold it at customer service for you.

Why don't you call the store. We live just a few miles away, and if there is something that may not be in stock, I call before going. Our Target is very helpful!

I ended up having to go for another reason. They only had 1 and I wanted 3 but no emergency to have them right this second. I hate calling stores like target. I never have a good experience and I'm trying to keep my stress to a minimum ;-) I didn't think of the order online pick up at store option. Will keep that in mind for the next time. :-)

I've had varied luck, which doesn't help you! I was told the online system isn't in real time, there's a rather large delay between store updates and what website shows. Once I was in a store and a clerk and I looked at site on my phone but the item was no where to be found.

It's hit or miss here too. Before Christmas we were looking for the Star Shower light things and only one store in the area showed they had it in stock. When I went there, they didn't have any on the shelf where they should have been. But when I asked an employee in the store, the dude said "Oh yeah, those are in the back. I couldn't find a spot for those on the shelf so I put them in the back room." I guess that's why that particular store still had some in stock when everyone else in town was totally sold out!

A little bit off topic....there could be a few reasons why a store shows items in stock but they aren't there. It happens a lot where I work...things get broken and don't get taken out of inventory properly, they never actually arrive on the truck but the inventory is updated as if it did, customer theft, cashier didn't ring up correct item therefore inventory still shows it as in stock.

You could call the store and someone could check. I think they could even hold it at customer service for you. Good luck with that. I went to pick up my item and it wasn't even close to the item I wanted. They were out of the item they were supposed to be holding for me.

I've had good luck purchasing the item online and picking it up at the store. There's only been once where they texted to cancel my order because of stock issues.

Totally off topic but it's about Target!!
While in the store I saw a cute shirt I wanted but they didn't have my size.
I came home and ordered it on the Target website and got for cheaper than what I could have purchased it in the store. Plus free shipping and an additional 5% off with my Target debit card.
Since I am in Alaska, they jack up the prices of everything to cover their shipping.
