I bought a cell phone off of Amazon. It was brand new but not the latest model. It is a Huawei smartphone and I like it. I paid $80 for it 2 years ago and it still works great. I have a monthly no-contract plan that I got on sale. Most of my phone use is for work and I can get reimbursed for it. It does everything I need it to and I don't see any need to upgrade unless it breaks. I got my son the same phone for the same price just this fall as his first smartphone.

I just put two more of my kids on my Verizon contract this week. There is no interest charge to pay monthly (for a period of 24 months) for their phones. The only advantage to paying for the phones up front is that I wouldn't be locked into 24 months of payments.
Verizon has the best service around here and on the routes of our most traveled trips. I've had Sprint and ATT and am happiest with Verizon. Being locked in for two years isn't a problem since there's no good alternative.

I think I'm going to buy a non-famous brand on Amazon. As long as it has the few features that I use then I'm happy. Like melissa , I don't carry unnecessary debt. Plus, I keep my phone a long time. My current phone is 3 years old. Cell phone companies have quite the racket going.

With Verizon, if you bring in an "outside" phone, you pay an additional $20/month. I didn't realize this when I bought my Note 2 at Costco a few years ago.
Check with your plan.

From the Verizon FAQ:
Why do some smartphones have different monthly access charges on The Verizon Plan?
Monthly access charges for smartphones on The Verizon Plan differ based on:
If you're currently making monthly device payments or own the phone, the monthly access charge will be $20
If you purchased the phone at a discounted price, the monthly access charge is $40
You can switch to The Verizon Plan anytime, but the monthly access charges for all devices on 2-year contracts will remain at $40 until each device contract expires. Once each device contract expires, the monthly access charge will automatically drop to $20.

What is an access charge and why should it be more if you purchase a phone at a discounted price?
Oy. I wish I owned one of these companies just a short period of time and had all that money go right into my bank account!
