And which one should I get? DD will be 16 and she REALLY wants a MacBook. She's been saving but isn't quite close enough to purchase it on her own. She mainly surfs the net and watches YouTube with the occasional photo editing. Any suggestions for which one? Ideally it would be nice if it lasts for college but I'm realistic that she might need something else when it comes time for that. I'm not above a refurb or even purchasing a used one.
TIA

I have a 15" Retina MacBook Pro that I use for work, but last spring we bought DD15 a MacBook Air. Here's the configuration we got her: 13-inch MacBook Air 1.6GHz Intel Dual-Core Core i5 Intel HD Graphics 6000 8GB 1600MHz LPDDR3 SDRAM 128GB PCIe-based Flash Storage She loves it, it'll last her at least until she starts college (she's a sophomore now) if not all the way through. Macs last forever. As for where to get it, we ordered it through Apple. They're rarely discounted. Although if you go to the Apple store (or maybe you can do it online) see if they'll give her a student discount.

I am going to be ordering a MacBook today. In my area, I can configure the laptop on line and pick it up from my local store today, all set to go.
My plan is to get one that is more than I really need right now so that there is room to grow into it. I am also going to have Windows installed so I can have all my required programs on the one laptop. Getting a more powerful machine will enable me to run the Windows side and the Mac side with adequate space and power.
I am really debating on the disc drive add on. Do we really need that anymore? All of the work from the client I still work for is either emailed or he gives me a site to access for download. Programs can be bought and delivered on line. Since I have a newer desk top Windows computer with a built in disc drive, is the portable really necessary these days? I can transfer files to/from a disc on that.
I agree that buying through the Apple Store is the way to go. I have talked with their online chat personnel a few times and they are super knowledgable and helpful.
For me, configuring it on line and picking it up at their store is the best way to purchase.

I have a MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2014) even though I got it in 2015 and it has 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3. Do I love it? Yes. I love, love my Mac. I was having trouble with my vision and got the computer before I got glasses. I wanted a bigger screen and could have been fine with a 13" but I couldn't see so I got a bigger one.
My GP uses a MacBook Air and loves her computer for charting, writing Rxes etc. She was a Levono person and they switched to Mac and never looked back.

I would have loved to have had the Apple Store close to me but I didn't have that benefit. I got mine from an authorized retailer recommended to me by Apple. I guess it's the next best thing. Apple Store is best IMO but I don't speak from experience.

I highly recommend buying a refurbished Mac from the Apple website.
ETA: I've had my MacBook Pro since 2011 with no issues.

We bought our Apple desktop computer through Best Buy. Their geek squad took the old one and transferred everything to the new one, no charge.
We also received some kind of "points" for our purchase which ended up coming back to us as a gift certificate. Seems like it was about $150 in value which made it cheaper than purchasing through Apple.

I recommend buying from the Apple store. I bought a MacBook Pro 15" with retinal display in 2013. I bought a year's worth of instruction and info sessions that were very helpful. I also got a "new buyers" class that was 1-on-1 with a techie guy at the store. He was great in teaching me how the basics of my MacBook which was a lot different than I had expected. They also transferred all the stuff from my old laptop to my new one. It was a really great transaction. Now two+ years later it is still a great machine.
I bought my dd (15 at the time) an Air for Xmas 2014 and is has been great for her. My plan is for her to use that through HS and hopefully college too.

TIA OH it will last well into college. Macs last a lot longer than PCs. The apple site has refurbished ones on it.

So I bought the external drive just in case. Haven't used it once, still in the box.

It will last her! Get as much as you can afford. She will only benefit from that later on.
We have 3 desktops that are 2010, and another that is 2001. All of them work! The '01 is slower, but that's what the processors were in '01.

I am on my 3rd MacBook! First was bought in 1998 (iBook with 10gb drive!) still runs but everything is totally outdated on it, second was in 2006 MBP 15" (100gb drive 2gb ram) that is used solely with my cricut for SCAL, most recent was bought in sept 2015, 13" MBP non retina (1tb drive 16gb ram) with the SuperDrive internally.
All 3 were configured and bought online and shipped to me.
The MacBooks that I buy are always upgraded to the max so they will last for lots of years. I seem to get 9-10 years on my laptops. DH buys PC laptops and ends up getting a new one every 2-3 years. I hate getting new computers up and running!

TIA I bought my DD a Macbook when she graduated from high school. She just got her Masters and is still using that same Macbook! She's had the screen replaced (she stepped on it once, she learned not to leave it on the floor), it does run a little slow but it still works well enough for what she needs. I bought it at an Apple store, got a discount (I was a teacher, she was a student). Their customer service is the best.
