After polz's thread HERE ...I was right, I did have a friend who wanted to try these, so we went today. Place is called Naughty Boy Café, we had a light lunch first (food was great too) and everyone around us was getting these. I went for the pavlova, which was a coconut milk and berry milkshake with the meringue topping and my friend had the red velvet cake:
They were delicious! We decided we'd tell people we couldn't possibly finish them, but the evidence doesn't lie. It took a bit of willpower not to lick the edge of the glass
I'd definitely go again...any of the aussies want to make a date? AussieMeg and perhaps polz could join us for the day...and run home...lol.

Does anyone know if we have these in the US and what we are calling them? Freakshakes seems to be more of an Australian term, but I can't believe that the US hasn't jumped on this shark.
We're taking a 2 week road trip to undetermined places (sort of a turn right, turn left sort of thing) and I'm willing to go pretty far out of my way to see the look on DH's face when one of these is brought out.

There was a link in the original thread that went to a buzzfeed article, It listed places around the world...just so happened that one of them was close to me, but that's where I found out about it, never heard of it before then. here it is againOr you could do a sneaky little detour via Oz or NZ...lol or looking at the article again, the UK one looks pretty good too. I'd say everyone there today who had one took a photo and lots will make it on to Facebook, probably one will pop up in your area soon.

I could never eat/drink that.
Well I could never eat and drink all of that.
I am sure that would be too much for me to eat.
I am pretty sure I couldn't eat all of that.
It could be too much to eat.
I wonder where they sell such a thing like that.
I wonder if I know of anyone who has had one.
Oh heck just go and find one!

Ohhhhhh drat! The one listed in the UK is very close to me......I had hoped it would be in London, or somewhere not too near anyway so that I wouldn't be tempted. I'm going to be in Newcastle/Tyne tomorrow..........!!

Thanks for the link!

Are there are a lot of options to pick from??? How did you make up your mind, because your friends looked just as tempting as your's!!! They have 4 standard flavours to choose from; Gluten free brownie, pavlova, salted caramel, Chocolate & Nutella Fudge and they had one daily special which was a the red velvet. My friend loves red velvet cake, so it was an easy choice for her. I was tossing up between the salted caramel (the cake on that was sticky date pudding) and the pavlova. If we'd just gone for the shakes, I would have had the caramel, but as we had lunch first I didn't want to have a big rich chocolate-y one and end up feeling sick the rest of the day. The drink part of mine was coconut milk, berries, vanilla and lime, so it wasn't as rich as the others...which was perfect I indulged and enjoyed but didn't regret it later

Those are just crazy! Fun looking, but nuts! Is that a doughnut and a piece of cake balanced on top of the jar? And cotton candy? And I can't even guess what all else! It does truly look like something that the US would come up with. I'm a bit shocked that someone else opted to make such a calorie-laden concoction. I thought the rest of the world laughed at us for that kind of thing!

None of the shops linked is anywhere near me, but I think I could do a pretty good mock-up at home. I'd like to try to, anyway!

Is that a doughnut and a piece of cake balanced on top of the jar? And cotton candy? Mine is a circle of meringue and my friend's is red velvet cake with cream cheese filling and that's Pashmak...which is a Persian fairy floss/cotton candy. I thought the rest of the world laughed at us for that kind of thing! Revenge time, now you get to make fun of us!...lol
but I think I could do a pretty good mock-up at home if you google 'dessert shakes', heaps of images come up, there's plenty of inspiration out there...

How do you eat one? Sip through a straw/long-handled spoon/fork? It looks hard to eat without making a mess, but definitely fun to try!

Someone in the US posted one on my Facebook feed a couple of weeks ago. She called it a milk shake but it was way more than that. I can't remember who it was but I think it was someone who lived in or visited NYC.

Those look divine! I saw something about $15 milkshakes in the US. The pic looked similarly over the top. I'll try to find the article. ETA It was in Time magazine. A bar in NYC called Black Tap. NY Post article with pics
