It has been a while since I have hired a professional photographer. My twins are seniors this year and we are taking their senior portraits in the Spring. How much did you pay to have your senior's portraits taken and what did you get for that? There are so many options # locations and #outfits/pictures. Thanks for your help!

Because I have a lot of referrals for my guy I did get a discount. He is one of the most expensive. I paid $450. That was for two sittings and the CD. I could not make up my mind on what I wanted. Also DD needed a picture for, yearbook, choir, band, marching band, confirmation. And heaven forbid we use the same if those for invites.
On a side note: coolest picture I had done. We put her kindergarten picture, 8x10 in a frame and had her hold it for one picture. It went on invites.

I think you are going to get a wide variety of responses because of where you live. I'd check a local Facebook classifieds group and ask. Or ask other moms who have had senior photos done. There are a lot of "moms with cameras" who do senior pictures in my area. They can be done relatively cheap and I promise they look great! Besides, there's no test for any photographer where they can declare themselves professional. I like to see FB pages and their websites. Most importantly, the referrals! They can have awesome work, but sometimes they are hard to work with or don't get things done in a timely manner.

I had one senior have a half hour session and I paid $50 for each photo I wanted to keep. They were edited. We kept five =$250. Second son had about 90 minutes and two settings. We paid $100 and I got all of the pictures and there were about 100. I had to edit and order. Try MPix for printing you pictures. They are awesome. We also found a Living Social deal where we got a 20 x 30 canvas portrait for $50, shipping included. They turned out great. I do remember other moms asking the same question you did and it was really surprising the different extremes people spent on pictures.

We also did the senior holding the kindergarten picture for both of my boys. We did it as a graduation picture though. They were my favorite picture of the day.

We already had my dds done a couple months ago but I think I might do one of these. We paid $200 for 2 hours anywhere we wanted and all the pictures on disc plus any edits we wanted. I found her from an invitation we received for a grad party. 8 years ago I used the most sought after photographer in town. My ex and I spent $1400 and I literally got 4 pictures.

My oldest graduated in 2008. We paid $725 for the sitting fee and package, which included 2 8 X 10s, 6 5 X 7s, and a bunch of wallets. We might have been able to keep some of the proofs. Youngest graduated in 2011 and the same package from the same photographer was just slightly more.

The ones at school were about $20. We couldn't afford to do the senior portraits that are taken outside of school. I think we are the only ones that didn't do the pictures! But last summer my 15 yr. old took "senior" pictures for her sister at the park. I think they looked just as good as the professional ones that her friends got! If pictures were in our budget, we would have loved to have done them on our beach vacation! That's our favorite place! Now because we didn't do senior pictures/graduation party (our deck was torn apart) for my oldest daughter, so we won't be able to do that for our younger daughters either. It wouldn't be fair. So we will save a lot of money!

I used a mom with camera type of thing but she was the one that took a bunch of pictures for the band. She did an awesome job and wasn't that pricey. Did at least 2 locations and 3 outfit changes and gave me a few edited prints and the CD.

This is an area where there will be a huge variety.
The "professional" place that took the crappy pictures required for the yearbook charges hundreds of dollars for prints. They were pretty terrible and I did not order any of those. I think the minimum I could spend there for 4 photos was about $150.
We had her real setting done by the receptionist at my office who does photo shoots on the weekends. She charged me $200, we went to the location of my choice (a place filled with street art, had 3 outfits, and she spent 2+ hours with us. She edited all of the worthwhile photos, and I ended up with more than 200 good shots. I couldn't asked for a better session; the pictures are gorgeous. I've spent about another $50 on prints from Mpix, which was much better quality than any place I can print locally.

We live right next to the mountains and the scenery here is amazing. Ah, some day.

I bet you would get gorgeous photos of the kids! I told my daughter that her out-of-state tuition was our priority, and with such an expensive school (with no financial aid/scholarship) we really needed to save every penny! I was the head of the yearbook at our elem. school, so I have a great camera, and my daughter is really good with photography.

There's a variety of prices here from the hobbyists to the pros with studios. It really depends on what you're looking to get out of the shoot. Do you want traditional portraits? Do you want lots of outfit changes and a more creative approach? Do you want hair and makeup services included?
The range around here that most people go with is from $200-$600ish.

I hated the expense for the awkward school photo in cap and gown, but I'd regret not having it! I've photographed the heck out of my kids, so another Mom with Camera and I are doing our sons' photos. If love to have professional photos made, but it has slipped to a lower priority on expense list.

The range around here for a standard senior photo shoot ranges from $750-1500. That for an in-studio session with 3-4 outfit changes.

I had boys so I know that makes a difference. less changes. But I found a gal that did "head shots" for kids that needed them for certain portfolios they had to have. This was 2008 and I paid $60 and she gave me the disc. 2010 I did my own and we went to the beach. 2015 we paid $150 and spent about an hour, got the disc to order our own prints. (Cool story about the one from 2008. My son started dating this girl he met in the town his is currently living (1/2 hr away), they went to her house to introduce to her parents and my son realized he had been to the house before and remembered that her mom had been the one to take his senior pics). Anyway, congrats on your senior. I would put a post on FB and see what recommendations you get.

I think we spent about $1200 for DD's portraits. Studio shoot with several clothing changes. About a 2 hour session that we narrowed down to 39 shots that went in a photo book that was part of our package. We then picked the prints we wanted from the shots in that book. We got one 16x20 that is mounted on what reminds me of foam core (which made it more interesting to frame), several 8x10/8x12 prints, plus wallets. At least they were supposed to be wallets. The shot we chose for those couldn't be cropped decently for a wallet size, so they ended up being 3 1/2 x 5.

The high end profession portraits are really going out of fad here. There are a lot of mom-with-camera ones. I saw several last year that were done with an iPhone, and I was really surprised at how good they were.
I took all my kids Senior portraits and printed them all myself.
Challenge your yearbook if they insist on a "professional". Ours does not, and none of them should, as long as you can supply them with a high quality image (high dpi) .
So, if you don't count the cost of my camera and photo printer, the total cost for my kids Senior portraits was probably around $25 for ink and paper.

My 2012 graduate's were $1600 for the smallest package offered by the photographer.
My 2014 graduate's were free!! a gift from the photographer to our daughter/family. It was a sad situation because my girl could not have the creative outdoor session she wanted and was very, very sick. I hired the photographer's hair and make-up person to help her look the best she could. Together, they did a beautiful job!! I could not believe how well they turned out. With just the right make-up and some creative posing and editing, you could not tell just how sick she was. When it was time to do the ordering I was very careful to get just what we "needed". The photographer told me to get what we wanted because she was taking care of the costs. Even the company she worked with for her printing gave her a discount!! The hair/make-up person I hired donated her time and talent!! I still ordered just the minimum we needed but when the order came in the photographer included a large beautiful photo book. I am crying now just thinking about it... I am sure the total gift was well over $2,000.

Sitting fee was $50.00 for 45 minutes, which ended up being much longer. On location, ds changed clothes 4-5 times. For $350 after viewing the proofs, we got 3 8x10, 4 5x7, 4 3x5, 16 wallets, a disc with 10 retouched pictures, and 30% off anything else we chose to buy, which turned out to be 4 additional retouched pics on the disc.
I know someone who paid $450 just for the sitting fee and then had to buy the pictures separately.
Costs can vary greatly within the same area. One thing I will advise is that if you have a boy, you need to find a senior photographer who does excellent work with boys - there are far fewer poses and outfit changes for boys, and they tend to be stiff in the beginning, so a photographer who can put them at ease is important.
