So bizarre, I've used crockpots for years and years and never have a had a lid shatter. It didn't fall to pieces, it actually cracked all up. I took it off of the crockpot and set it on the countertop. Then it fell to pieces when my son tried to move it. I am going to write the company and see if they can tell me why this happened and perhaps send me a new lid. The oddest thing is is that this is the newest one I own. It is probably 16 months old.
UPDATE: I got an email back from the company today and they are sending me a new lid for my slow cooker. There is no charge since they are assuming that there was a flaw in the glass.

Maybe it had something to do with hot kid/cold counter? Like with cold water on hot Pyrex.
Hope you can get it replaced.

I had a crockpot lid shatter on me last month too! So weird. It wasn't hot. Just picked it up off the counter, and it shattered. Ours was originally from Costco and was maybe 4 or 5 years old. It did get a lot of use, but nothing to warn me that it was going to self destruct like that.

Crockpots aren't made like they used to be...my oldest one works the best and has out lasted at least 4-5 "new" ones.

That happened to my crockpot lid too. I'd been making chicken broth overnight and found my lid all crackled in the morning. Luckily a friend had a spare lid!

I think it may have something to do with manufacturing flaws in the glass. Any kind of little bubble or imperfection will affect stability, especially at a higher temperature. I know a lot of people who have had glass Pyrex dishes explode in the oven. We had an exciting incident a couple of years ago when I tried to run the self clean function on our oven and the oven door exploded. Luckily it was only the inside layer of glass but it was still quite a mess and the oven was only 6 years old. We live in military housing and when I called in the work order for it, I don't think the person on the phone quite believed me when I said the oven door had exploded.

The sliding glass door at an apartment I lived in once shattered. I was home alone at the time and at first thought someone had shot it. Scared me to death! It was safety glass, but little pellets of glass went everywhere!
Can you buy just a lid? I have a crock pot lid that's broken--not cracked, but the handle holding the lid broke a couple of months ago. I keep meaning to check online, but never have.

I once had a 13x9 glass dish break while in the oven. Talk about a mess! Glad your DS wasn't hurt.

Well that stinks. Glass breaking during cooking sounds awful. I haven't experienced it, hope I never do. cadoodlebug, that sounds like a terrible mess. And so disappointing. Hope you weren't cooking for guests.

I've had that happen before.
I am very careful about lifting the lid off my crockpot. Mine is an All Clad, so I hope that it's better quality. The lid does want to stick--it kinda vacuums down on the food, so I kinda pry it up with a butter knife or don't put it on all the way if possible (it's oval)
After shattering a couple of glass pitchers when pouring hot tea into them, I'm very careful about temperature changes.

With exploding pyrex and now shattering crockpot lids, cooking is downright dangerous.

I once took a lid off a hot pot and tried to rinse it off with cold water and it shattered in my hand. So stupid of me I should have known better. It sounds like your lid was defective.

Well great they're replacing it. I agree it sounds like some kind of manufacturing flaw.
