I'm SO fu*king frustrated with the VA medical system I could SCREAM!!!! It is a damn disgrace the way our Veterans are "taken care of" especially if they live in a small town. My husband had to drive three hours each way for a three minute X-ray on January 14 (which is asinine to begin with) which his primary care provider ordered days after he called for an appointment about his pain. Today...he still can't get an appointment to discuss the issue. Sorry for venting here. I'm dealing with a combat Vet with severe PTSD who is pissed off about this. I'm listening to him going through a freaking Merry-go-round of phone calls this morning TRYING to get seen.
At at this point, I see why Vets go bananas on VA medical staff.

I am so sorry - it is shameful how our service men and women are treated. I can't even begin to imagine your frustration.
I hope he gets in sooner than later.

Thanks ladies. We deal with so much but sometimes it just breaks me. This is one of those days that I am in tears and his frustration level is maxed out, which is never a good thing in this household. I just want to scream, so I did the next best thing, vented here. Thank you for 'listening.'
As much as I hate to say this, I'm seriously considering voting for Trump. His plan to open up local options and choices for Vets is what we need. Whether that'll actually happen, who knows. But it's a better hope than Hillary's "Oh, we will just fix the VA." nonsense. It hasn't been fixed after the exposure of the disgrace already and I'm at the point where I JUST WANT CARE FOR OUR VETS! This is why it chaps my ass that our country can't wait to haul in more refugees to care for when we can't even take care of our own citizens who sacrificed their physical and mental health for THIS country.
Okay, this has turned into a rant rather than a vent, so I'm going to attempt to dial down my anger. It isn't helping anyone.
Huge hugs to you all for understanding and sympathizing.

It is disgraceful the way those who have so bravely served our country are treated. Waiting weeks for an appointment when you are in pain is NOT acceptable. Sometimes the wait is the difference between life and death. I am so sorry you and your husband are dealing with this..

I'm sorry that sucks. I know a lot of hard working dedicated professionals work for the VA and I know the bureaucracy can drive everyone mad.
I hope someone can cut through the red tape and he can get the care he needs.

Oh happy momma, I'm sorry. Dh and I are both vets and have been lucky to have had wonderful care, but we know some hurting people who certainly don't. It's such a crapshoot of where you live, a decent PCM, a complicated condition...I hate it for you. Vent and rant away, you are certainly entitled.

I hope someone can cut through the red tape and he can get the care he needs. Thank you. I am a veteran and I am also an employee of the VA - I am a patient care provider. I hate when the entire system is lumped together when I have dedicated my life to helping my fellow veterans.
It is not a shame the way veterans are treated. Anyone can have trouble getting a medical appointment depending what kind of medical care you need, not just VA care. I needed a root canal and I have dental insurance and I couldn't even get an apt with an endodontist for a week - a week of excruciating pain. This was private dental care, not government dental care.
I am sorry whenever someone has trouble getting the care they need, and you are free to vent, but my vent is the sweeping brush people give to VA care when it is a slap in my face every time we are all painted with the same brush. Most of the people provdiing care at VA hospitals are also veterans. We are trying to take care of each other.

Do you have a local Vet Center? They can help you with this. We sure do. It's at the same CBOC he's dealing with to TRY to get this resolved. Sadly, they're not a lot of help. He's been trying for years with them to get his DD-214 corrected to show three medals he has that aren't on there. I know it's not the fault of the workers. They're so freaking understaffed that they simply don't have time to do everything. They're good people, in general. They just need many more bodies working on all things. But you know how that goes...Veterans just aren't a top priority for this country. I never had a clue how horrible it is until I married a Vet and got to know many other Vets. It makes me cry.

I'm adding a different vent - I took in two bunnies and they need a cage. I have responded to several Craig's list ads and one person got back to me saying I could pick it up tonight, gave me no address or contact info. This is after they responded to my email at midnight so I didn't see it until this morning.
So now I keep checking my email to find out where and when to get this cage that I really badly need and they haven't responded. I know they may sleep during the day but come on! You are the one who wanted to sell something. Can't you at least check your email every so often when someone wants to buy your item?

I certainly understand your point of view. We are not criticizing the caregivers. It's the system that is flawed.
I got a root canal next day through my provider.
Our vets deserve treatment that is local and timely.

My friend had to drive her father to Seattle, because the center has an ER there and it would be the only way he would get admitted to the hospital. We have a va center a half hour away, but he couldn't get service there.

Call your Congressional delegation. That and make some noise with your city's local government. Maybe they can help push things along.

My staff are all negative Nancy's (and one Norman) I wish I could wipe slate clean and start over. Complain you don't have enough hours, then decline when asked to work more....you can't have it both ways.

So sorry to hear that you and your Dh are struggling with his care through the VA medical system. I hope you can get the care he deserves quickly and that someone does listen.
I will say that my Dh is a vet, and has gotten nothing but excellent and timely care at our VA hospital in NW AR. They are outstanding, and we are so appreciative of the services he has received as a veteran. I know there are some facilities that are not doing a good job, and I am thankful for our VA.

I've had very little experience with the VA healthcare system so take this for what it's worth, but it seems to me that location has a lot to do with it. I know one person who gets excellent care, and another across the country who has trouble getting appointments and medical equipment in a timely manner, etc. I've often wondered if this was due to one place having much more demand than the other, if they were overseen and run differently, or what. I don't have any answers, but just wanted to validate everyone that, just like often when the government is involved, you can find a real difference in the care one receives.
