DH wants to go to a fancy spring gala at a 5 star hotel. The theme is "palm trees and pearls". It's a black tie affair, so no Hawaiian shirts or grass skirts!
The last formal occasion we went to was 4 years ago, and the trauma of finding a dress, shoes, evening bag, etc still haunts me!
So, what should I wear? All the tropical themed dresses I've seen online are very casual and made of cotton so that's out. I'm seriously at a loss. I don't want to be too 'costumey' but I would like to look appropriate for the event.
any ideas???

I would go with a beautiful tropical color like coral or a blue that flatters you. If you hate color - look for a shade of gray and add tropical colored sparkly jewelry or a multi colored wrap or pashmina.
Have fun!

My dd just went to a very fancy charity gala in downtown mpls. It went the gamut. It is winter here though. She wore a long dress, with sequins on the top, and nude low cut back. She had her hair up, and minimal jewelry. She said there was short dresses, long, and all mixes of dresses.

Sounds very Lilly Pulitzer. I'd start there.

I would definitely lean towards a grey vs. black, but then add color in your accessories.

I would think the decorations are going to be island theme but people come dressed in normal cocktail dresses. Just find a fuchsia dress with pearls as a happy medium.

I go to a formal ball every year with my husband. I save myself a lot of trouble by wearing the same thing every time. My dress sits the back of my closet and I pull it out once a year. What happened to the dress you wore last time? Could you update it with new jewelry and shoes or a pretty wrap? (Mine gets new shoes this year. ) If you want something new, those floral dresses were lovely. They fit the theme without going overboard.

That's a great idea - I really love turquoise, so that's a possibility, or perhaps a grey dress with a coral wrap or jewelry. Thanks, off to Pinterest!!

Sorry those are GIGANTIC!!!! Thanks for those - I really like them although I'm not sure I could pull off either the strapless or the high neck look. I love the colors and shapes of both though. I'll see if I can find similar online:)

I did contemplate the other dress as its a pearl color and I've only worn it once! I think that'll be my back up dress if I can't find anything else. It would certainly be easier to find a new wrap and shoes than a whole outfit!!
