My sister has 2 kids. My oldest niece has her current last name. The father is not in the picture. My newest niece has the father's last name. My sister and him plan on getting married.

Such an intensely personal decision. In my case, I had been married (and hyphenated) for many years when I had DD. We discussed it and (given the plan to be "married til death do us part") we gave DD her father's last name. Of course, when DD was 11 weeks old and my (then) DH decided he wanted to leave and get a d'v, I certainly was wishing I had either given her my last name (or at least hyphenated hers so she would have both of our names.) She grew up with his name, even though he was rarely in the picture, I went back to my maiden name with the d'v (no hyphenated name.) So when I got remarried, I did not take new DH name and we had 3 people in our house all with different last names. For the most part, Christmas cards come addressed to first names only. Had I known then, what I know now......(I would have given DD my maiden name so we would be the same. It bothered her all those growing up years in school to have a different name than me.)
