I need to replace my carpet. I know people hate carpet but it's gonna happen & I need some help on picking it out. I have hardwood floors in my entry, hallway, kitchen, dining area. I have carpet in office, living room, stairs & bedrooms. My house is a traditional cape cod 2 story, with a traditional floor plan & decor. Nothing modern about it. Do you have a pic of a room with carpet that you like that you can show me or a link? I'm decorator challenged to say the least.
Also the hardwood floors are new & I have enough wood to do one additional small room ie. my office right off the entry or a guest bedroom upstairs. Would it be weird to have everything upstairs carpeted except the guest bedroom?

I would put hardwood in your office since it is right next to your entry and then have carpet upstairs.

I am looking at a brownish frieze carpet right now for our bedroom and living room. I like wood, but at the same time my floors are freezing and I hate that way more.

We have frieze carpet in our bedrooms and in our family room and den. Those two rooms are in our lower level which is like a half-basement (I live in a bi-level home) and it's always freezing down there. I love my hardwood in my living room/kitchen/hall, but the carpet in the other areas is nice.

I have carpet everywhere except the kitchen and dining room where I have tiles. I have wooden floors in the sitting room which I could get polished up, but I like the warmth of the carpet.

We have the same carpet, just a shade or two lighter. My sister chose it for her house too. I think it's about 5 years old and has held up well.

There's a new super plush thick carpet, but Consumer Reports had an article about most vacuum cleaners not working on it because air can't circulate between the piles and create the proper suction.
I would also put the wood floors into the office. Carpet is nicer in bedrooms.
If I were picking out carpet, I would look at wool and wool blends. Wool carpets last so much longer and wear really well. I've heard the Martha Stewart carpets are nice quality--just from interior design sources I've read.

I have a similar carpet to the one shown above. I only have carpet in my great room and den. I love the warmth and the sound deadening. I went with a lighter carpet with a faint speckle of darker threads throughout. This carpet shows NOTHING...but we are a no shoes house (empty nesters).
I will never understand the concept of wanting carpet to last forever. I want my carpet to last between 5-10 years. After that, my guess is it will be full of who knows what and no matter how deep I clean it should likely be replaced. If my carpet "looked" perfectly good after 10 years, I could never get my dh to replace it. I fear that will be the case with this current carpeting. It is nearly 3 years old and looks freshly laid. My inlaws have 35+ year old carpet. It skeeves me out. They are finally updating their house and changing it out.

It may sound ridiculous, but I would research or ask a carpet cleaning company if there is one type of carpet (berber, frieze, etc) that is easier to clean than another. That way down the road, when you do get them cleaned, you get the best cleaning possible.
And I say this because of the carpet cleaning ordeal I just went through, so there is some reasoning behind my suggestion...

Oh and carpet in the office, definitely. Keeps the look more cohesive downstairs

I am looking at a brownish frieze carpet right now for our bedroom and living room. I like wood, but at the same time my floors are freezing and I hate that way more. we have what might be this exact carpet in our lower level living room, hall and bedrooms. it was installed a year ago so it's no surprise it still looks new, it should. but what IS impressive to me is how excellent it has weathered stains. we have a chiweenie who isn't fully housetrained, despite continued intense revisiting of housebreaking lessons. now we have crates in the boys bedrooms for her to sleep in, as she would sneak out of their bed and pee in their closet in the night. when we found it with a black light, we used an enzyme cleaner and it came up, immediately and completely. the same cleaner did not have the same result on 10 yr old carpet upstairs.
also, this same dog ate a lb (10% of her body weight) of mackinac island fudge once during the summer when we were not home. we came home to (not kidding) over 30 vomit spots in house, the majority of which were in the basement. she literally went to every room and every couch, bed and chair and threw up on it, plus all over the floor. and they weren't little, it was like someone had gone around with a 5 gallon bucket full of chocolate vomit, I don't even know how it logically came from her. some warm soapy water and it was erased completely from this carpet. it really was fantastic, I thought everything would've been ruined and was already crying over the cost of replacing everything.
so anyway.. frieze carpet, with stain warranty (make it pet if applicable, tho really it's geared to work for biological stains and we all know humans can throw up too) is awesome. and we chose it after seeing it in many middle-to-higher-end new builds around here, so it must still be on-trend.

I'm having my new frieze carpet installed tomorrow. When we built our home we didn't have a ton of options so we went with the cheaper carpet knowing we would be replacing it soon. Well, time flies and babies happen, so 7 years later I am getting the new carpet. It is a StainMaster carpet that is multi colored. Browns, creams and Taupes! I'm super excited!

I have a lighter shade of what Daikon posted in both bedrooms and on the stairs. It has held up well even with my cat who loves to scratch the crap out of it. I swear, I feel like my house is one gigantic scratching post

My suggestion is to seriously look at model homes as the color schemes are suddenly VERY different than what has been popular for the last fifteen years. I've gone thru three sets of models and am seeing the same trends in the house shows on tv. Browns are totally out and granite is less and less popular if it has Browns. You don't want your redo to look like the olive green appliances of the 70's or the faux painted look of a decade ago. Do some research before you choose. Things have really changed.

I did a great light color berber when we replaced carpet in bedrooms 2 years ago. It's quite pretty. Similar to the close-up below. The berber is awesome. I think it looks as "modern" as carpet can look, and it wears nicely. The light color - I'm a damn idiot. It's nearly white. Everyone warned me. But we have no kids, a white cat, and I *THOUGHT* we were pretty clean people. It is awful in our bedroom where we have high traffic after coming into the house. We're going to replace it in the next year or two, with laminate wood to match the rest of the house. If I was set on carpet, I'd still do a berber but go with a flecked or tan that wouldn't show dirt as much.

I wish I didn't have carpet in my office. I work from home 100% of the time and I'm destroying the carpet right underneath my desk. I probably should have gotten one of those plastic chair mats so my chair wouldn't cause a wear pattern, but those mats probably make a dent where they sit....

Check into the "Smart Strand" carpets. They are incredible for stain resistance (warm water takes up most stains, no cleaners needed) and are very soft to the touch.

Carpet isn't nicer in bedrooms when you are severely allergic to dust mites and you can't sleep because you're so stiffed up you can't breathe.

It was horrific. Reminded me of the run in the pantyhose flashbacks from the 80s. If you have pets with nails, berbers are the devil.
