Hi Peas. We are thinking of taking our 2 girls (ages 6 & 2) to Omaha for a few days for a little mini-vacation during Spring Break. Any advice on "must see" places or where to stay. I'm thinking the children's museum and the zoo, but that's all I've got. Thank you!

Walking around the old market is fun, as long as the weather cooperates. Dundee is a fun little community to check out, too. In downtown Omaha there is a Christmas store that is open all year round, it was my favorite place to go when I was living there.

I grew up in Omaha and I have to say (and you already know) that the zoo is amazing. It has so many fun features. It was also the first time I saw two animals mate. They were elephants and that was a bit traumatic! We also went to the Old Market area and walked around. There used to be a restaurant downtown that spun around (slowly) so you could see the whole area. That might have closed years ago, but I do remember it as a little kid.

It's been 15 years since I've visited there (met family half way between cities before we moved overseas), but I do remember the zoo was really well done. My kids were 2 & 4 at the time and we spent a long day there.

Plan an entire day for the zoo there's a lot to see and do there. Lots of people love the old market, I'm sort of "meh" about it.

Thanks. I'll have to google the Old Market. We traveled through Omaha several years (pre kids) ago and went to the zoo. I don't remember much about it, but I'm sure we we will all enjoy it.

I am going to guess that your girls are not big into planes and military, but I will mention it. The SAC Museum is a good one, if that is your cup of tea. sasmuseum.com/Also, equally not thrilling for young kids is the Steamboat Bertrand at DeSoto Wildlife Refuge. Its about 30 miles north of Omaha. It is a neat exhibit of a steamship that sank in the Missouri river in 1865, and they were able to dig it up and all the contents were still there. Kind of cool, but probably not for your kids age. Also - very awesome wildlife area, especially during migration. www.fws.gov/refuge/Desoto/wildlife_and_habitat/steamboat_bertrand.html

They kind of put a damper on things.

Great list lisacharlotte. Lauritzen Gardens is great. We are members even though we don't live there anymore. I love to see the changing exhibits. The Joslyn Art Museum is another option.

There are fantastic restaurants in the Old Market and Midtown. Make sure you hit Ted and Wally's Ice Cream shop in the Old Market. There is a fun store there with old toys and candy and such.

Also check out the area around First National Bank (the skyscraper in Omaha). They have bronze sculptures and water features (that won't be on due to cold) but still cool to see.

Plan an entire day for the zoo there's a lot to see and do there. I second this. Best zoo we have ever seen, and that was at least 12 years ago. Much has been added since.

Thank you all. Does anyone have any suggestions about what part of the city to stay in?

I'd stay in the old market if you can. That way you can walk around (and slide down those slides I mentioned!).

I also vote staying in the Old Market or Midtown. You are close to the best stuff. First National also has a whole series of bronze statues of settlers. It is worth seeing. The buffalo are amazing.

My husband and I were just talking about this ice cream. We went to college at UNL and this was always worth the half hour walk.
