She is a size 14, she is not plus-sized. I think that is why the thread title "plus size" is in quotes. I do think in the fashion industry that is plus sized. Not so much in the real world when you are buying from stores.

She is a size 14, she is not plus-sized. Lane Bryant, the plus-size store, starts at size 14 and lots of lines of clothing top out at 12. And when put in modeling terms, she's definitely a plus-size model. I don't get people wanting to say she's not plus size. Now, she certainly isn't an "average" plus size body with how well proportioned her curves are, but that's true of straight and plus size models.

I'm a size 14 and I know I'm not a stick figure. To me, she's plus-sized and looks fabulous.

I read she's a 16, but that's neither here nor there because that body is still not a realistic goal for most women. Her fat distribution is perfect. She's gorgeous. No matter how large I get, I'd never have those perfect curves. It's still unattainable perfection. I'd be far more likely to get to be a size 0 than to ever look like that woman, so it kind of annoys me to read about how "refreshing"it is to see her featured.
Nothing refreshing about it IMO...she's Jessica Rabbit, still an ideal.

I heard this the other day...it makes me sad. She is 5'9" tall and weighs 180lbs. I don't feel like she is actually representing all the plus sized women out there. It is nice that she is on the cover and not a stick thin model, but I don't really consider 14/16 plus size.

So if she's not plus sized enough, it doesn't count as any kind of improvement in the unrealistic standards of beauty usually on display?
Given that most models are more in the range of 5' 10" or taller and weigh in the neighborhood of 120, I think this is a pretty big step in representing different body types.
How much larger does she need to be to be plus sized enough?

It is simply not possible for one women to represent all of the plus sized women.

I should point out that she's one of THREE cover models. SI is releasing 3 different covers. She's on one. Usually they only do one. I wouldn't applaud them just yet. Men who want to buy this magazine can choose the one with the skinny model on it.
While great, I'd be more impressed if she was the only cover.

What i wouldn't give for those proportions! She's gorgeous and it's a good trend. I'd be interested to see how well her cover sells versus the other 2 mentioned.

Sure, but I'll go one step further in giving them credit. Two of the three covers feature non-standard SI cover models. I think that's significant.

Well I am 5'10" and wear size 14 and can honestly say I do not consider myself plus size at all and most of my friends would balk at my attempt to lose 25 lbs, granted that wouldn't put be in the model weight range of 3 lbs per inch it would put me at a healthier weight.
To me plus size would depend on the person's height and weight, a 10 lb weight gain on me won't even make you blink twice but put that same 10lbs on a five foot person and you are going to notice it.
Frankly I am happy to see that they are using someone other than their typical model figure. I think she looks healthy and beautiful!

She weighs about 60% more than other models her height. I consider that a significant departure.
And regarding her shape/curves: There are plenty of 5'9" 110 lb. women who would not be chosen as models because of figure "flaws" (pear-shaped, short legs, cankles, whatever...). What's wrong with choosing a 180 pound woman with a fabulous figure?

Most women in this country wear a size 14 or higher. To call her a plus size woman (and I am a plus size woman) is ridiculous. In most of the stores that I shop in plus size doesn't even start until size 18. Again, I totally love that they put her on the cover, but I object to the classification of her as "plus sized".

I agree; that's why I said they need to stop using the phrase "plus sized." Not sure if you read the article, but that was a major point there. Also, they give statistics on the average size of American women. I think it was 140 in 1960 and now 166, or something like that.

Ashley does a line of lingerie carried by Addition Elle in Canada. It's controversial if her size is plus or not. The best comment I saw in all the talk in this was: anything larger than a zero is a plus. Quit with the female wars.

It is very interesting to read the responses in this post. Many are saying that an 14 is no way "plus sized", where in Australia that definitely would be considered so. No flaming, just reality.(Note, I hate this term but I am using it because it is a term of reference).
Our plus-size stores generally start at a 16 (a US 12). In Australia the average size is 14/16 which is where I fit. I would not like to see our average size go two sizes higher.
I like seeing fit and healthy women no matter what size in the media. An Aus TV presenters Fiona Faulkner is a great example of a stunning woman who is a size 16 (US12) that has had great success. I would love to see more like her.

An Aus TV presenters Fiona Faulkner is a great example of a stunning woman who is a size 16 (US12) that has had great success. I would love to see more like her. Size 14 is plus sized from a sizing standpoint at stores I've been to, however it's more like average from a how many people are this size. I think the average us woman is a size 14. Also with vanity sizing who knows, I used to be a 10 and am probably now a 6, after losing weight. However I have some old size 10 pants that are very close to my newer size 6s. So i know sizes have changed. Finally she is a plus sized model, no matter what anyone wants to argue about her in the real world. In the modeling world they use a size 12 or 14 model to model women's clothing. In the real world she'd just be average sized clothes wise, but incredibly lucky figure wise! Eta in the us, plus sized is often called women's, and average sizes misses.

I wish they'd take all the numbers (0,2,4,6 etc) away and have everything in inches or cms (like men's clothing). No vanity sizing then.

Most plus size departments at major retailers begin at size 18. Size 14 is not plus sized. She is normal sized, average sized, doesn't look like she is starving herself sized. She is beautiful and it is good to see a normal sized woman on the cover. It would be nice if that trend continued. The stick figure, bony models do nothing but hurt girls' self esteem. The attention being paid to the size of this model is just as hurtful.

It is simply not possible for one women to represent all of the plus sized women. This exactly. Yes, she is beautiful and exceptionally well proportioned. In the end we are still talking about the cover at a magazine meant to appeal to men - what exactly do you expect? She wears a size of clothing that is generally sold in the "misses" or plus size department of major stores or that is sold in specialty stores catering to larger women. She may be the size of the average American woman, but that is not what they are basing the description upon. Yes, she is the smallest plus size and used to model clothing for that entire size range, but that is no different than regular women's clothing be modeled by women who are a size 0 or 2.

Most plus size departments at major retailers begin at size 18. Size 14 is not plus sized. I'm not sure what you mean by "most" but Target's Women's department begins at a 14. I also randomly checked and Macy's, JC Penney and Kohls also start at a 14. Old Navy starts at a 16. I've yet to find one retailer that I shop at that starts their plus-sizes at an 18. So I'll refute your "most" claim here. I'm amazed that women here are literally arguing that she's simply not plus-sized enough. But this is 2peas afterall.
