I am planning a trip to NYC in April. We are taking the red eye from SFO to Newark and will arrive in Newark at 5:55 am. We can't check into our hotel in Time's Square until 4 pm. We will have one piece of luggage each. We are thinking of taking the ferry from New Jersey to Ellis Island that day. The first ferry leaves at 9:30. What should we do between 6:00 and 9:30? Is that a dumb idea or should we go into NYC and do something there? We may see a show that evening.

I would have breakfast somewhere and try to adjust to the time difference.
That is a lot (to me) to cram into a day without having a restful sleep the night before.

Take a nap? I've taken that red eye too many times to count for work. If you're an excellent sleeper, you're going to get a max of 4 hours. There's no way I'd plan a show that night.

The hotel would hold your luggage. By the time you land and leave Newark, much of that time will already be taken.

Dump that sucker. Seriously, it will be a PITA on public transport, and you'll have to keep an eye on it very time you stop for coffee, bathroom, etc.

How are you planning to get from Newark to either your hotel or Liberty state park( or would you go from battery park to Ellis island? ) if your going to battery park then it will take you all of that time to get there for sure.
The question isn't when Ellis island opens but when your ferry park opens.
And I don't know if they allow luggage on the ferry to Ellis island definitely call/email to ask that one.

We did that once going from NYC to New Jersey on the subway and path train. Since then we always land in Newark.
