I'm surprised to not see a thread on this yet.
My take: The Pope has gone out of his way to extend grace to persons of all faiths and persons who don't have any faith at all. It's worth asking why he's unable to do so in this case.

When I read the "wall" quote, my first thought was "This from the guy who lives in a walled city-state."

Did you hear his exact words (well, the translation)?
"A person who thinks only about building walls, wherever they may be, and not building bridges, is not Christian”
Okay, it's pretty obvious who this is directed to, but it is still not outright explicit.
I don't see how he's not extending grace in this case? Can you clarify?

He's unable to extend grace to the person in favor of the wall. (i.e. even the Pope can't defend Trump's insanity.)
And yes, I agree that the comparisons to the wall around the Vatican city/state make me have the crazy eyes in real life. As in, you really can't see the difference?

I thought the headlines were misleading when I heard what was actually said and none of the other Republican candidates have jumped on what the Pope said or denounced Trump because they also want a strengthening of the border.
I like the Pope, but think he was fed a line to get a response and reminds me of his "supporting" Kim Davis.

The quote I read was, "A person who thinks only about building walls, wherever they may be, and not of building bridges, is not Christian. This is not the gospel. As far as what you said about whether I would advise to vote or not to vote, I am not going to get involved in that. I say only that this man is not Christian if he has said things like that. We must see if he said things in that way and I will give him the benefit of the doubt."
The benefit of the doubt is generous.

I don't hold the Pope's opinions in high regards so I don't think much of that statement.

I think calling this Pope a hypocrite for saying that is just silly!! This Pope didn't build the walls, the walls are thousands of years old. Heck, this pope doesn't even live in the Palace! silly.

But the pope does nothing to break down those walls. I happen to like this pope and I'm not Christian, so whatever he says about who is or is not Christian is of no relevance to me.

But the pope does nothing to break down those walls. He doesn't need to because he has opened the gates to the homeless and to refugees. He has chosen to live in a modest room in what is essentially a hostel for visiting religious and has not lived in the palace. He serves Mass to the janitors and caretakers at the Vatican and washes the feet of prisoners--men and women, Muslim and Christian. (I will add that I think it's interesting that Boehner invited the Pope to speak in front of Congress and now the conservatives are mad at the Pope for implying that their candidate is ungodly. He can't win.)

Nobody can win...don't you know that?
Actually, I think this pope is a good man. He lives the life the New Testament says Jesus led. I think what many people just don't want to grasp is that both Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders popularity is a testament to just how disenchanted people are with the status quo and typical Washington. Calling either of them names does nothing to address the real problem, which is people are fed up with the Washington establishment. And the failure of people to understand this strength of this phenomenon is going to result in us being subjected to 4 years of someone who shouldn't be president but who won because he was an outsider.

And at the end if the day, the Pope is still just a mortal man like the rest of us.

Just another example of how thin-skinned Donald Trump is.

Just another example of how thin-skinned Donald Trump is. Who would remain silent if anyone, including the Pope, inferred that they were not of the faith that they claimed to be?

Here is my question... Are people that are in favor of planned parenthood, gay rights, abortions not "christian" as well? But I guess that wasn't asked of him on this trip. And if not asked then why not?

I think instead of lashing out I would try to demonstrate that I was walking the walk. Especially since the person he is supposed to be emulating said to turn the other cheek.

It's worth asking why he's unable to do so in this case. It may be that the Pope sees Trump as a massive influencer. Should he make it into office, people will be guided by his policies and attitudes (well, they already are).
