Can you recycle the ink cartridges? I don't see a recycle sign anywhere on the box or the cartridge (shame on Canon!).

I don't think so. I agree that it is very wasteful.

I take mine, with other ink cartridges, to Office Depot for recycling. Office Depot sends me a check/ rebate for use at their store.
It helps offset the price of ink. So far they've taken any brand cartridge, including generic. I think Office Max and Staples have similar arrangements.

It's not even ink that's left in there, it's just plastic sheeting and hard plastic housing, throw it in with your regular recycling.
Also, there's three recycle symbols on the back of the box. Right near the UPC codes.

I never thought of taking it to staples/office depot for recycling. I just assumed that since it was not liquid ink, it wasn't a part of that program. I'll take in the next one.

This thread made me Google a bit about recycling Selphy ink cartridges and while I did not find any specific info, I did find out that you can send your empty ink or toner cartridges to Canon -- they pay for the shipping! So if you don't have local resources for your ink/toner cartridges and you use a Canon product, you can print shipping labels to return your used items. They even pay for shipping back of old printers for recycling. Pretty great!

This thread made me google about recycling in New Zealand. Canon seem to have a programme here too which is great. Will call them on Monday to find out more.

I'm terrible. I've had my selphy for over a year(it was a gift) & have yet to use it(no ink or paper with it). Thanks to this thread I just ordered ink on-line and I'm GOING TO USE THE THING!

The closest one to you is the Lamberts Business Systems store/office in New Plymouth. There is one near me in Auckland so I'll start saving up cartridges to take there.
