I would pop in so they could see the kids and then enjoy a picnic so your family can spend Easter with DH/daddy. Then go to the zoo or the Botanical Gardens with the kids. When I lived in Dallas, there were always lots of places for Easter Egg hunts that your kids should enjoy. I agree, if it is too stressful, just make sure you have plans and a reason to not be there. Yep I would plan something fun with the kiddos and then drop by Gramma's for a quick visit.

Since you live right next door I'd just go and stay for a short while. I'd use the baby's nap time as an excuse to leave.

We used to have uncomfortable holidays for a number of years and a number of reasons. Circumstances have changed and while some things got worse, a FEW got a lot better. One in particular was having to rearranged our schedule when to have Thanksgiving or Easter Dinners. There is also the manipulation of the conversation, the irritation on the Casa Elannah people by certain parties and honestly things are better when we decided that we didn't need to follow tradition any longer. The players changed and it's good now.

I used to live next door to my MIL. My solution so I wouldn't have to be there every time was to plan an activity at my house for all the kids - no parents allowed. You know, so they could visit in peace. Keep the kids for an hour or two, then take them back and tell everyone I needed to to go back home and clean up the mess.

I love the idea of taking a meal to your DH - partly because nobody in his family can argue with it!

I haven't read all of the replies. My suggestion would be the zoo or the aquarium if there is one close by.

My first thought was WHERE have you been! I noticed that you didn't come over when most of the rest of us did. By the way, I don't know HOW but FaceBook asked if I knew you sometime in the last year or so. I started to friend you to see how you were but then realized you probably wouldn't know my real name, just my pea name.
Since I know the area you live in, my first thought was the Botanical Gardens in Fort Worth. It just seems like an Easter thing and something I would have liked as a kid but not sure yours would.
I like the idea of taking a picnic to have with your DH and I'm sure somewhere near his work there would be something for the kids to enjoy after the meal. Since you are going to be with DH, they couldn't say anything bad about that. Well, they COULD but they'd look silly complaining when you are going to be with DH.
And I get you, I hate it when someone treats me totally different when someone else is around. You wonder which is the true way they feel about you. If they really like you but don't want to have the other person pick on them if they treat you nice and don't have the guts to tell them to back off... or if they are just pretending to play nice when it is just you and them.

What!!! Another crazy person who lives next to their in laws!!! Me too. Said in jest! This happens once in awhile, but DH is home. Sometimes we just want to do something as the five of us. There is no reason you can't. My MIL understands that, FIL doesn't. If you don't want to go, just call her up and let her know you want to stay home and enjoy the day with your kids. I have asked kids first sometimes. If they do and we don't, we compromise. I do feel a little bad about not being there, but look at the big picture. We live next door. We can see them everyday. Everyday! So if we don't see on a holiday, or they don't make a concert, no big deal. MIL gets that too. Heck, when one of mine and cousin had confirmation the same day, we told them to go to cousin. They needed to celebrate with the ones they only see three times a year.

We'll be flying home from Mexico on Easter (again) so no pressure this year to visit anyone. Any chance you need a Mexican vacation?

950nancy, we are going on vacation the week after Easter, if I had thought ahead, I would've planned it a week earlier. Lol.
AngieandSnoopy, I don't remember your real name and after the old 2peas was shut down, I kind of forgot about it until later last year a pea mentioned it on FB. I'm not on FB much anymore though. Good to "see you".

I put my foot down and we no longer make that drive for holidays.

I know we exchanged names and you had my phone number the time you were in Ruidoso and going to try and contact me. I'm still here. I'm friends with only one pea on FB and she hasn't been here much lately. I'm very seldom on FB.

They live next door, you can't skip it. You can say the baby is sick and you need to stay home and send over the other kids.

I say plan something for you and your kids. If you feel you *must* go over for a little while so the grandparents can see your kids, then make sure it's BEFORE whatever you have scheduled-- that way you have an *out* to get away, and you won't get stuck next door with the in-laws.
"Whoops, gotta go- have to get to XXX before they close for the day" or "We're going to the 3 oclock movie; gotta run so we get there in time" or something like that.
Just because it's a holiday doesn't mean you're obligated to spend the day with them-- your family unit is now you, your DH, and your kids. That family unit should come first, before the in-laws.
eta: and don't (outright) lie about anything-- lying about one thing could cause other lies, it could get complicated, and you live next door; getting caught out in a lie would be extremely easy. (stretching the truth, though, isn't lying-- lol)

Around here, if DH isn't available to go to his family function, then I'm not obligated to go! I'd make some plans with the kids and take lunch or dinner to DH, but wouldn't feel obligated at all to hang with his family. Drop in, if you must but I'd have other plans and go about my day!

(stretching the truth, though, isn't lying-- lol) Oh, I wouldn't. My kids would out me even if I was the lying type, which I'm not. I'm more of a bluntly honest person, so no worries! UPDATE: I appreciate all of your replys....truly. I have made plans. DH doesn't want us to drive the long haul to Dallas (it's at least 1.5 hours one way) for a 30 minute picnic, which makes sense, so I made plans with someone who doesn't have any Easter plans. We are going out for Chinese food (because no one will take her out to eat it, ever) and to take all the kids to see Zootopia, which we want to see anyway. We will spend a little while with the extended family after DH gets home from work. I feel so relieved already. Whew!
