My husband has a short trip down to so Cal for the middle of April. Even though I know it will be insanely busy, I'm thinking of tagging along and taking my 9 year old DS and going to Universal for just one day. He's never been, and has been dying to go. We'll be there for one Saturday mid-April.
I'd prefer to get the most of our one day, so we're planning to stay somewhat close to the park, have DH drop us off and take the car with him.
Any ideas on a decent and reasonably priced hotel to stay? We'd like to stay close, but we will have the car, so we don't need to be right there.
Any general advice on what to do at Universal is appreciated too. I haven't been there for 15 years! We definitely want to do the backlot tour, and *maybe* tour the Harry Potter park. DS will love it, so we'll take a peek, but we'll probably skip the long ride lines.
TIA!

we went last summer and stayed on universal at Cabana Bay. I know it seems like a lot because we were on site, but it really was worth it IMO. That place was so much fun we could have skipped a day at universal and still had fun.

isn't there a Hilton or Sheraton right near there? DH has gone to seminars there.

We looked at the Cabana Bay, and it does look awesome...but pricey. There are about a thousand other hotels within a 10minute drive. Nothing that really stands out to anyone?

I'm confused- California or Florida? Your op says so cal, but then you mention looking into an Orlando resort. ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/5645536/images/Q_m8lDOvc_3Le3r1GKdf.jpg) If So Cal, and the Sheraton is more than you want to pay, look into hotels in Burbank. There are several hotels right near the airport, and they're reasonable. And it's not a bad drive at all. My family lives in Glendale and will drop us off and pick us up sometimes when we go to Universal. Have fun!

DH and DS are heading to US in May to see the Harry Potter stuff. They are staying in Burbank....everything within walking distance to US was too expensive for "just a place to sleep".

The Red Line (light rail) has a stop at universal. The stop is at the bottom of a very long hill, but universal has shuttles to take you to the top. You could stay in downtown LA or Hollywood, close to one of the red line stops.

I know there's a resort right there in CA. That must not be the name. That one looks awesome, but expensive for just sleeping. We are going to the Hollywood CA one!

There is a Hilton & a Sheration adjacent to Universal that will be in the $250/night range. As others have said, you will find less expensive options in Burbank or other areas of the valley (Best Western, Holiday Inn Express, etc.). IME, the hotels in LA and Hollywood will be more expensive than the ones next to Universal.
I'm not sure what has been changed to make room for the Harry Potter stuff, but my recommendation is always head right to the backlot tour and get that out of the way. We really like the Waterworld show so will look at the times and plan which show to attend and then move around the park hitting other rides & shows.
