How did your day go today? Is your teammate feeling any better? Was your principal still in pounce mode? All right – full disclosure – I took a mental health day. I really needed it! Things of been getting harder and harder at school every day. I cried during my planning on Valentine's Day. It's funny now – but it sure wasn't then. For the past three years I had an AP that I loved. My principal drove him out last year. I think he mellowed her – and now that he's gone (and my new AP is a little twin of my principle) – she has gotten so much worse! We also have a new evaluation system which is really, really hard. And I am one of those perfectionist teachers that has to always go above and beyond. And it's wearing me out! Out of the five teachers on my team, four are not coming back next year. I am the last hold out. So anyway – I stayed home today. I slept most of the day, watched a little TV, and slept some more. I've only taken one other day off this year – and that was to have a colonoscopy. So I do not feel even the slightest bit guilty. I'm going to bed early tonight, and I'm sure I will wake up in the morning with a new perspective. My teammate is back at school. Her heart checked out fine. They think she had a spasm in her esophogus. Honestly-- I think stress might have played a wee little part! Thanks for asking!

Good for you. You probably wouldn't have been at your best. Our state has gone to a different evaluation system that puts the admin in our rooms with an iPad 6-8 times a year doing evaluations. Every single one of them is a "drive by" meaning we have no idea when they happen. Our principal was great at hitting us on Friday afternoons or right before holiday breaks. The other part (50%) of our evaluation was kids' test scores. That was rough when kids who hadn't been in your room all year were included into your score. Lots of crazy stuff happening and many of my colleagues were in tears far too often. The number of "specialists" that were sent into to improve the district scores meant more weekly meetings and paperwork that went on for days. We were also observed monthly by a team of roving administrators (8-10) that were out looking for best practices and then discussed your lesson at length. While I didn't love the new observations, I knew my kids knew their stuff and was pretty confident. Last year when they gave us all iPads to teach a new writing curriculum I knew I was out. For me, teaching is natural and give me a set of standards and let me go. Nope, the new curriculum was scripted and kids sat at their seats for 45 minutes and had 15 minutes of small group where they had to write the same genre for nine weeks. It was painful.
I saw so many teachers get out of the profession. My boss was so hot and cold it made your head spin, and we had a system of letting others know not to go near the office. She told my teammate who was having a baby that the child would ruin her career and she had options. Who says that? When my teammate started looking outside the district she was told she would never get another job because my boss would make sure of it. At the end of the year my boss resigned. The staff loves the new principal. It is amazing how much your principal can control your happiness.

How are job prospects around you? Maybe a different environment w/a different principal would make work enjoyable, again? I'm sorry, but I didn't read the last thread entirely. You likely answered this.

Over the past 20 years I've had a couple good to very good principals and a few really awful ones too. I know how that one person can impact the entire building! Our job is already difficult and then if you feel you don't have support and empathy from the front office, it makes life even more difficult.
Good luck. Any chance you might put in for a transfer?
