Do you recognize the brand of this yarn?
With all the talk about crocheting and the post on temperature blankets, it gave me a nice sentimental gift idea for my DD's 20th birthday coming up. I will do a temperature blanket of the year she was born. Ideally, based on our weather, I would like 14 color steps but I found this photo of a selection of 12 colors that are nice. The colors are quite vivid but I find that it looks a bit off to have light shades combined with dark shades so I think the fact that the "intensity" of the colors is consistent makes it visually appealing to me.
So many yarn brands I'll never be able to see in person since there are very few yarn sources around here (especially with a wide range of colors). It is hard to decide based on an internet photo. Thanks.

I think it's Caron Simply Soft. The ball band inside the cakes is the same color as Simply Soft and the sheen of the yarn is similar to what I have.

Thanks scrapsotime. A google search shows that brand as more of a flat shape. The photos makes it look like they are stubby circles so maybe you have a different variety or size.
Do you like this yarn? It came up on google at Joanns. Do you get it from your local store or do you buy it online. I looked at yarn at Joann's a few weeks back and the selection was very minimal. I'd be surprised it they had more than 5 to 7 colors of this if that.

This yarn has been caked on a yarn winder. It didn't come like this, it's wound into cakes after you buy it. It comes in longer skeins - not cakes.
Caron Simply Soft is pretty good for the price.
I can buy it at Michael's, Joann's, and Walmart locally. None of them have the best selection. If I need a wide range of colors I buy the I Love this Yarn brand at Hobby Lobby.

I am not positive but will agree with the prior poster that the yarn band looks like Caron simply soft. I have knit with it and didn't love it - but I'm kind of a fussy yarn person and don't love acrylic in general.
I do love encore yarn (with wool but washable) and also feel knit picks has a nice selection that is reasonable. (Encore is $6-7/skein in our local yarn shop).

The name attached to the photo is Cindy Kuo and she's on Ravelry, you could always contact her and ask what the yarn is. Cindy Kuo
UPDATE: I just found where someone asked her the same question about the yard, her reply was:
Well at least that will save you from looking for it any longer! Her original post was in 2013 and the reply was in 2015 so that yarn probably hasn't been made for awhile now.

I think that pjaye found your answers for you. The yarn has been wound on a ball winder. That is done with yarns that come in skeins/hanks that you put onto a swift and then wind with a ball winder. Since Caron Simply Soft comes already wound in balls that can be either center pulled or used from the outside, I've never seen it rewound on a home ball winder. It makes much more sense that it is an Australian yarn. I don't think I've ever seen yarn at Michael's/Jo-Ann's/AC Moore that needs to be wound - only yarns that are sold at yarn stores - brick and mortar and online. I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised when I went to a yarn store in Ann Arbor when I was there last week and bought three skeins of yarn and they wound them into cakes for me right then even though I have my own swift and winder. It was just so nice to have someone else do it!

Do you have a Hobby Lobby nearby? If you want an inexpensive but easy to get acrylic (washable) yarn then I would use I Love This Yarn by Hobby Lobby. It comes in a million colors and I like knitting with it a lot more than Simply Soft or other acrylics. Some acrylics are scratchy and I find Simply Soft to be rather squeaky (I can't think of a better word, but although it's soft it has a weird plastic feel to it)

I have to give a shout out to woolwarehouse.co.uk! The company is in the UK but shipping to the US is very reasonable and I find that even with shipping costs, the yarn is cheaper then Joann and much better quality. I love the Stylecraft DK and it comes in lots of gorgeous colors

Knitpicks Brava acrylic yarn has the most beautiful colors and is so nice to work with. It's my favorite yarn to use on blankets.
