Been there done that with exploding Pyrex, though not the same circumstances as yours. Bet your DH leapt about 30 feet in the air when the jug exploded!! The best of luck in the coming weeks and months clearing up the mess.....and even in a years time if anyone goes into the kitchen barefooted they will find the one tiny shard you've missed!!

It is very scary. I had a similar experience at Thanksgiving a few years ago. My mother had just taken something off the burner (glass cook top) and it was still obviously hot, well two seconds later she took a pyrex (I think it was pyrex) baking dish out of the oven. Not even thinking, she put it right on the stove top on the burner she had just turned off. Well, she turned her back to walk away and two seconds later we all hear a big BOOM! I don't think we have all ducked for cover so fast in out life. I was finding green bean casserole all over the kitchen for a week after in the strangest spots.

I first heard about this phenomenon on TwoPeas and every time I use a Pyrex dish I think about it. That said, I use mine in the oven--not on the burner! That's totally something I could see my DH doing.

Oh what a mess. I hope no one steps on a missed piece of glass. I don't think my husband would do that BUT, his mother does have 2 of the glass sauce pans that you can use on the stove she uses them all the time.. I have never cared for those.

I've done that before. It's the gift that keeps on giving. I stepped on broken glass for months, literally.

After reading the thread on the old board, I did some research with the end result of retiring my pyrex pans. I will, under duress, still use the old one (I've had it for at least 25 years so it is the old formula) but the newer one is only used for cold stuff. I am a big enough dork and a messy cook and I am sure that with my luck the pan would have shattered after making something like sweet potato casserole and I would end up with slivers and stains. I don't want to tempt fate.

BTDT, DH unknowingly set a pyrex dish with bean dip on an a eye that had been left on. I this crazy, weird sound and could not figure out what it was. I went it the kitchen to check the stove and BOOM! Broken, hot, burning glass everywhere. It burned several holes in the floor and my foot when it landed on it. We are all very careful now of pyrex

I've never heard of this before. So you're not supposed to place the dish on the stove top? Or just a hot stove top?

We had the great Christmas Day Potato Casserole Explosion thanks to a Pyrex dish back in 2011. My DH's aunt put it on the stovetop to keep it warm. Like you said, there were millions of bits of glass EVERYWHERE, and we had to throw out the potatoes, the gravy, and some assorted goodies that were sitting on a nearby countertop and took the brunt of the shrapnel. That was a Christmas to remember!!

I think your DH is my DH's long-lost brother. Mine was trying to make Turkish coffee and used a Pyrex measuring cup on the stove. Oops.
My DS also broke one by putting it in the microwave when it was empty. He was heating water for cocoa and forgot to fill it. At least that mess was contained in the microwave.

I don't think we have all ducked for cover so fast in out life. I was finding green bean casserole all over the kitchen for a week after in the strangest spots. My friend did this very thing and her lasagne exploded everywhere. Years later when she was getting an eye exam for lasic (sp?) surgery, they found a small piece of glass in her eye. She can't prove it, but she was standing right beside the dish when it exploded and thinks that's when it happened. They removed the glass and everything is fine, but it could have been so bad!

Okay I never heard of this before, is it just me?? Sometimes when I need 3 cups of boiling water I just measure it out in my Pyrex cup and put it in the microwave to boil. So you are NOT supposed to do that??? Oh boy!

Found this on the internet.. all you peas with exploding Pyrex cups.. you are all druggies!!! "But one industry was struck very hard by the switch: the crack cocaine trade. It turns out that turning cocaine into crack requires bringing the solution of water and powdered cocaine to a very high temperature and then rapidly cooling it. And for years, crack makers would use Pyrex — borosilicate glass ones, that is — to accomplish this step, successfully."

YIKES!!!! That is such a HUGE fear of mine every time I use my Pyrex dishes! I can't imagine the mess & then the fear of not getting up every single piece of glass!

Good luck with the cleanup! I hope you could safely get the shards. I had a window explode, and found shards weeks later. Vacuums cannot always get imbedded pieces.

It only took my DS one time to put something wrapped in foil in the microwave to learn that lesson.
Of course me (his mother) had probably warned him 1,000 times before he did it.
So sorry for your mess!

I've never heard of this before. So you're not supposed to place the dish on the stove top? Or just a hot stove top? Neither, microwave is okay though. Also if you take it hot from the microwave and put it on cold, like granite countertops, the same thing can happen.

Wow. I put a Pyrex glass 13 x 9 pan on the grill once. Lesson learned, but I never realized how dangerous they truly are.
